The original edition of this now classic work was done by Jacob Cohen in The Nation as “the finest one-volume interpretation of American history extant.” The book I read which is the third edition “Out of Our Past,” by Carl Degler has added a chapter on the development of American families, and greatly expanded sections dealing with the place and history of women in our past.

Idea 1My viewpoint on how African Americans were treated never truly occurred to me,how much hatred was sent towards them. But this book truly showed me the truth. "If there must be Jim Crow cars on railroads, there should be Jim Crow cars on the street ways," "Also on passenger boats... if there are to be Jim Crow cars, there soul be Jim Crow waiting saloons, and Jim Crow eating houses..There should be Jim Crow sections of the jury box, and a separate Jim Crow dock and witness stand in every court- and a Jim Crow Bible for colored witnesses to kiss. It would be advisable also to have a Jim Crow section in country auditors an treasurers offices for the accommodation of colored taxpayers."Charleston S.C.(pg.253).

Idea 2I never realized how long abortion has been going on. The fact that people just did abortion like it was nothing, not thinking anything through changed my perspective on the way I understood these woman. I truly cannot understand how they didn’t really understand what they were doing. Your child is apart of you."By its very nature, abortion is primarily a women's method of controlling fertility."(473). It really made me think about people not thinking things through.

Idea 3 As one girl worker in a wool factory said "My father gives me all the money I need but not all the money I want. I like too be independent and spend my money as I please."(386).  This quote really made me think because sometimes I have everything I need but its not what I want and I felt like even though she was from a different time period I could relate to her. Though it was only one quote it made me understand and view my book differently.

You should learn

• You should learn that though we are 100s of years apart we are still connected that even though it was way before us its apart of us and its how we got to where we are right now.
