• The American Political Culture– Republic created in 1787– Based on constitution by Founders – Elected president– Bicameral legislature– Separation of powers– Protection of liberty

– Copied by other countries but didn’t work well

• Democracy more successful in US because of these factors as noticed by Alexis de Tocqueville French Political Observer1830’s:– Us offered rich land or territory where democratic republic could

take root– People had opportunities to acquire land and make a living– No feudal aristocracy monopolized the land– US government imposed minimal taxes and few legal restraints– Small independent farmers could make democracy work

• The American Political is also based on – Tocqueville stated that the “customs of the people” or their

“moral and intellectual characteristics” = Our Political Culture
