Mandatory Commercial Recycling (MCR) requires businesses and public entities, generating four (4) cubic yards of trash or more and multifamily residential dwellings with five or more units, to establish and maintain recycling service.
Recycling not only conserves our natural resources but can save money by reducing waste disposal costs. Our staff can assist in selecting the appropriate recycling service level, along with the necessary education and outreach to residents and managerial staff.
Mandatory CommercialOrganics Recycling (AB 1826)The California State Legislature approved Assembly Bill 1826 (AB 1826), which set forth statewide mandatory commercial organic waste recycling. The bill requires businesses generating more than four cubic yards of organics per week and multifamily residential properties with five dwelling units or more that generate four cubic yards of green waste per week, must arrange for organics recycling services.
Organic waste means food waste, food soiled paper, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, and nonhazardous wood waste.
you can comply by taking the following actions:
• Separate organic waste from other waste and participate in a waste recycling service that includes collection and recycling of organic waste.
• Recycle organic waste on site, or self-haul organic waste off sire for recycling
• Subscribe to an organic waste recycling service that may include mixed waste processing that specifically recycles organic waste.
• Donate edible food to a food bank or food rescue as appropriate.
The law phases in the requirements on businesses and multifamily residential dwellings over time. Additionally, the State law contains a trigger that will increase the scope of affected businesses, if waste reduction targets are not met.
January 1, 2019: Businesses that generate 4 cubic yards or more of commercial solid waste per week shall arrange for organic waste recycling services.
summer/ fall 2021: If CalRecycle determines that the statewide disposal of organic waste in 2020 has not been reduced by 50 percent of the level of disposal during 2014, the organics recycling requirements on businesses will expand to cover businesses that generate 2 cubic yards or more of commercial solid waste per week. Additionally, certain exemptions may no longer be available if this target is not met.

Food Waste ONLY
California produces nearly half of the nation’s fruit and vegetables, yet 1 in 8 Californians struggle with food insecurity, or lack of access to food that one needs to live a healthy lifestyle.
With the passing of Assembly Bill 1826 also known as mandatory organics recycling, Burrtec is committed to partner with local jurisdictions and organizations to support a Food Rescue Program within its existing Food Waste Recycling efforts to help divert edible food waste to local communities in need.
Your food waste establishment can participate in food rescue programs in your community. Contact your local food banks and other food agencies to begin participating in a food rescue program!

Construction and demolition (C & D) materials account for about 30 percent of the waste stream in California. Many of these materials can be reused, thus prolonging our supply of natural resources.
Common C & D materials include lumber, drywall, metals, masonry (brick, concrete, etc.) carpet, plastic, pipe, rocks, dirt, paper, cardboard, or green waste related to land development.
Burrtec will assist with local ordinance requirements, LEED certification, and CalGreen building standards to assist with statewide diversion goals.

organic Composting workshops
Organic waste makes up 30%-40% of the waste stream. Composting kitchen scraps
and yard trimmings helps divert material from the landfill as well as waterways and
water treatment facilities. Creating your own compost encourages gardening and
provides a nutrient-rich source to grow a garden. Burrtec composting workshops
are available to the public.
Vermicomposting Workshops
vermicomposting workshops
Burrtec vermicomposting workshops provide information to the public on
how to util ize l imited space using worms to break down organic waste.
Vermicomposting is the process of composting, utilizing various species of
worms. Vermicast is the end product of organic matter created by the worms.
Vermi-composting is ideal for those with limited space.

Burrtec’s material recovery facilities sort and process recyclables. With the increase in the amount of recyclables being discarded, material recovery facilities play an important role in the process of collecting recyclables to redistributing them to third-parties to reintroducing them to the general public. Burrtec is constantly finding new material to divert from landfills though the use of our material recovery facilities.

Over 90% of Burrtec’s vehicle fleet has been converted to clean burning natural gas. Burrtec utilizes renewable natural gas (RNG) to further reduce its carbon footprint. RNG is a renewable, low carbon fuel sourced from organic bio gas sources such as anaerobic digestion of food/ agricultural waste, wastewater treatment plants, or landfills. RNG’s carbon emissions are 70% lower than that of diesel fuel.

Burrtec has RNG fueling stations at various hauling yard locations to support the growing fleet of LNG & CNG trucks and vehicles.

Conventional lubricants are refined from crude oil. Synthetic lubricants, on the other hand, are chemically engineered to form pure lubricants. Synthetic lubricants contain no contaminants or molecules that don’t serve a designed purpose. They are made from molecules that are saturated with a higher percentage of carbon-hydrogen bonds, leaving few sites to which other, harmful molecules can attach and attack the molecular composition of the oil. By converting to synthetic oil, Burrtec has significantly reduced engine oil consumption and oil filter turnover.

Compost Technology
Composting is the controlled decomposition of organic material such as leaves, twigs, grass clippings, and food scraps.
Composting helps keep the high volume of organic material out of landfills and turns it into a product that is useful for soil restoration.
In the fall of 2014, Burrtec installed a GORE Compost System to provide green and food waste recycling solutions for our customers. The system produces a nutrient rich compost product that is returned to the soil, closing the sustainability loop for material that could have otherwise been sent to a landfill.
GORE Co m po st technology ut i l izes forced aeration coupled with a semi permeable cover. The technology is a three phase process that includes the first phase of high rate active composting, the second phase of maturation curing composting, and the final finishing phase which turns the compost into a stable product ready for market.
Environment
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) a biological process that produces a biogas produced from organic wastes. The process of anaerobic digestions consists of the conversion of decomposed matter of the waste to organic acids that become the methane gas. This gas is then used to create energy as well as sustain the AD process itself.

Landscape ProductsHumic CompostContent: Clean yard trimmings and pre/post consumer food residuals. A rich, dark product which provides a source of slow release nutrients and humic acids. The compost undergoes the state required composting process to eliminate potential weed seeds and plant pathogens.
Use: A quality and economical soil amendment for landscape installation and maintenance. Humic Compost is also approved for use in Organic Farming by the California Dept. of Food and Agriculture and the Organic Material Review Institute.
½” Soil AmendmentContent: Assorted tree trimmings, wood and bark. The ½” soil amendment is a medium brown, natural ground cover resembling the “forest floor” that will reduce erosion and water loss.
Use: Suitable for mulching planter beds or may be tilled into the soil. ½” soil amendment is a good source of organic matter to enrich the soil.

Color: Light brown or blonde
Use: 1” wood chips are an attractive cover mulch of light colored fine wood chips that will reduce erosion and prevent water loss.
2” Cover MulchContent: Assorted tree trimmings, wood and bark.
Color: Medium brown
Use: 2” cover mulch is suitable for top dressing large common areas, parks, trails, native habitat landscaping, and residential slope areas. 2” cover mulch is an excellent compliment to landscape planters that will add organic matter to the soil and reduce soil erosion and water loss.
2” Wood ChipsContent: Dimensional lumber and pallets.
Color: Light brown or blonde
Use: 2” wood chips are suitable as a mulch or top dressing for large common areas, parks, and residential slope areas. 2” wood chips are an attractive light colored wood chip that will prevent soil erosion due to wind and rain.
