Step off the tourist trail and experience lesser-travelled Indonesia. Visit the cultural riches of Java, peer into a vast volcanic caldera at daybreak, drift among beautiful remote islands, snorkel in turquoise waters brimming with fish and coral, relax on a pink beach and come face to face with the Komodo Dragon.

Fly into Yogyakarta and transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day settling in at your leisure before a welcome dinner with the group.

Java is the heart of Indonesia – the modern hub and also the cultural heartland. Central Java is where the Javan cultural identity is at its strongest, and Yogyakarta, known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage, is its soul. Established in 1755, it is crammed with magnificent architecture, palaces and temples. On your first full day take a rickshaw to the Royal Palace, where you will visit a puppet maker and the water palace. Visit the underground mosque and a batik workshop – Javanese batik is highly prized – and later drive to the spectacular temples of Prambanan. These are the most outstanding examples of Hindu architecture in Indonesia and the graceful temples are a beautiful sight against the sky.

Rise early the next morning to drive to Borobodur, 1,200 years old and one of the

most magnificent sites in Southeast Asia. Its imposing stone structures loom out of vivid green rice paddies and palms. Spend time here before driving to Candirejo, a fascinating village retaining a traditional way of life, set amongst beautiful rice paddies and rainforest. Wander through an authentic Javanese village and see traditional artisans at work. Continue into the foothills of Gunung Merapi to meet with a shaman, who communes with the spirits. In the evening witness an unusual local tradition in South Square before dinner.

Take the train past lush scenery and volcanoes to Surabaya and check into your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure or there is the option to take a tour around the antique shops of Surabaya.

At first glance, Surabaya is a vast, modern metropolis, but there are many fascinating corners of the old city that are richly rewarding if you know where to look. Surabaya is an historic trading port with old quarters and markets, which you will discover the following day in the company of Graeme Steel, an English expat and specialist guide who knows the city’s old heart inside out. Explore the vibrant Arab quarter, where labyrinthine warrens lead to a historic mosque, the crumbling Dutch quarter with wonderful 19th century buildings, and sprawling, atmospheric Chinatown. Continue through an old kampung and drive to Mount Bromo.

Rise very early the next day to drive up to the crater of Mount Bromo for sunrise. The sight that greets you as you crest the caldera is a lunar-like landscape of epic proportions and a surreal, otherworldly beauty. Smoking volcanoes sit in a sea of mist within a vast crater, making one of most breathtaking sights in the whole of Indonesia. Drive up and over the edge of the major caldera, then drive across the sea of sand towards smoking Mt Bromo and get out to walk up to the lip of the crater itself to peer into the depths of the volcano.

Drive to east Java and Kalibaru and check into your hotel amongst the spice plantations. This is an area off the tourist trail and it has a peaceful charm, with beautiful landscapes. Explore tea,

coffee, spice and rubber plantations. There is the option to visit a local village with a natural spring water swimming pool.

Next morning take the short ferry ride to Bali and continue to the Lovina Hotel on Bali’s north shore. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax – there is excellent snorkelling at the nearby reef, the option to canoe, visit local waterfalls, hot springs or the local town. Or you can relax by the pool.

Next morning fly to Flores, one of a dramatic series of sharp peaked green islands offering beautiful views. Visit the village of Mero to witness a folkloric dance, the caci, a dramatically staged whip dance.

Rise very early the next morning to take a traditional boat to sea. This is a day of cruising through beautiful peaked islands and turquoise sea as you make your way to Komodo. Disembark and take a guided tour of

Borobodur

the National Park to see the Komodo Dragons, walking up to Sulphurea and Frigate Hills for superb views across the island and the sea. Back on board, sail to nearby Pink Beach, where you will moor and take the opportunity for some spectacular snorkelling in turquoise water brimming with brightly coloured fish and corals. Afterwards sail back to Flores, before returning to the hotel.

The following day transfer to the airport to fly back to Bali and drive through lovely Balinese scenery to Sidemen. Sidemen village is set in beautiful landscapes of rice paddies and mountains, and flowers and greenery are everywhere. Spend the next day exploring the village, visiting the local weaver and the community centre, with time at leisure to explore at your own pace, join cookery classes or take a massage.

The following morning drive to Ubud for the day. Ubud’s reputation as a cultural and artistic hub set amongst verdant rice fields has made it an increasingly popular destination. Visit the monkey forest and the Agung Rai Museum of Art and spend time exploring the town. The following day drive to the airport for your flight home or extend in Bali, Lombok or elsewhere in Indonesia.
