In 1991, fresh from college and with only 10 dollars to his name, Miguel Caballero set up a company

specialized in personal protection solutions, such as bulletproof clothing, in Bogotá, Colombia.

Now, 27 years later, his company, which is called Miguel Caballero S.A.S., is the market leader

for personal ballistic protection solutions in Latin America, has 470 employees, manufactures

100,000 garments a year, and recently won the prestigious Red Dot Award for design.

How did this happen? Well, with hard work, innovation, and a little help from Teijin Aramid’s high-performance Twaron® fiber.

Building success with high-quality partnersWith 31 official distributors across South America and Africa, 28 in the US, and supplying ballistic protection to a wide range of celebrities and VIPs, including 22 presidents worldwide, Miguel Caballero has established as a world leader in personal ballistic protection solutions. However, the success of the business was by no means a guarantee. “By setting out on my own, at a young age, to build my bulletproof clothing company, I was taking a big leap of faith,” says Miguel. “From the start, I was supplied with high-performance Twaron® fiber, from what was then AkzoNobel, which later became Teijin Aramid.

Red Dot AwardMiguel Caballero is making waves not only in the bulletproof clothing market, but also in the wider world of product design and innovation. On July 4, 2016, Miguel Caballero’s patented Armor T-shirt won the prestigious Red Dot Award, at a ceremony held in Germany, in the manufacture and retail category. The winning t-shirt weighs only 900 grams, offers full ballistic protection, and was singled out by the jury panel for its innovation, ergonomic design, functionality, durability, quality and environmental sustainability. Among the other winners of the Red Dot Awards were Apple, Kingston Technology, Andreu World, Bose Corporation, Bodum, Calibre Style, LG Group, Adidas, Philips, BMW, Duccati, Ferrari, Mercedes Benz, Hewlett Packard, Lamy and Airbus. Certainly not the smallest players!
