Pastor’s Corner . . . Dear parishioners: As you know, all parishes in the diocese have been closed for a month due to the increase of Covid cases among staff and priests. This 30 day closure has expired on January 15, 2021. However, Bishop Alberto Rojas has extended this closure until February 16, 2021. Because of this, parish staff will be working from home. I want to emphasize that the celebration of the sacraments will continue. They are celebrated outdoor. If you have questions about any of the sacraments please call the office and leave us a message and a parish staff will return your call to render the appropriate pastoral service. If you prefer email correspondence, you can find our staff emails on our parish website at www.sfrome.com. Let us keep each other in prayer so that parish offices can reopen safely on February 17, 2021 for Ash Wednesday and into the holy season of Lent. I asked for your patience and understanding during this time of change and uncertainty. I am keeping all of you in my prayer, and especially entrusting you in the hands of our God who is our maker and our healer. “Rise, let us be on our way” (Mk14:42). Sincerely, Fr. Sinceramente, P. James F. Oropel Pastor

the week

January 31 St. John Bosco was born on a poor farm near Turin, Italy, in 1815. At an age when the modern child would be enjoying the pastime of a kindergarten education, hew was out on the hillside tending ship. At about his ninth year, when he expressed the desire to become a priest, it was found possible to let him commence his education by walking more than four miles daily for half a year. The other half, in Spring and Summer, was spend in the fields. The day before he entered the seminary, his mother, laying her hands on his shoulders as he stood robed in his clerical dress, said: “To see you dressed in this manner fills my heart with joy. But remember that it is not the dress that gives honor to the state, but the practice of virtue. If at any time you come to doubt your vocation, I beseech you, lay it aside at once. I would rather have a poos peasant for my son than a negligent priest. When you came into the world I consecrated you to Our Lady; when you began to study I bade you honor her and have recourse to her in all your difficulties; not I beg you to take her for your Queen.” Today the motto on the Salesian coast of arms: Da mihi animas cetera tolle tibi - Give me only souls and keep all the rest,” bears witness to the fidelity of Don Bosco to the words of a truly Christian mother. The admirable “Apostle of Youth” is almost our contemporary. He founded the Salesian Society of St. Frances de Sales and the Daughters of Mary, Help of Christians. His life’s work was consecrated to the care of young boys and girls. He died in 1888, and was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1934. PRAYER: O God, Y ou who have raised up Blessed John Bosco, Y our Confessor , to be a father and teacher of youth, and have willed that through him, with the help of the Virgin Mary, new families should flourish in Your Church, grant, we beseech You, the inflamed by the same fire of love, we may labor to seek souls and serve You alone. Amen

Building Project Prayer

Almighty Father,

We are grateful to you for our existing worship center. We are also grateful and indebted to all the generous people over the years, especially the generation that founded this community some 130 years ago. We are grateful to have the opportunity to continue your work by building our future church for our children and this growing community.

Lord, teach us true generosity that we will be the first to give, for all we have is yours. Help us to give wholeheartedly. Touch our hearts to not be afraid to give, for you take care of our needs and bless us with infinite rewards on earth and in Heaven.

Through the intercession of St. Joseph, the carpenter, and St. Frances of Rome, our patron saint, help us to achieve our dream to build our future church, a space set apart from the mundane, solely dedicated to meet the divine, so that we are drawn to a more contemplative and deeper experience of you.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Amen.
