Chapter 3-- The Third Lesson: PUT CHARACTER FIRST Good character is that quality which makes one dependable whether being watched or not, which makes one truthful when it is to one’s advantage to be a little less than truthful, which makes one courageous when faced with great obstacles, which endows

one with the firmness of wise self-discipline. Arthur Adams In every moment of the day we must train ourselves to put character ahead of financial gain and professional advancement, to value character more than momentary pleasures and the esteem of other people, and to place character first means that we will allow our thoughts, decisions, actions, and relationships to become subordinate to this quest to become and remain authentic. This is only possible of course with the help of God’s grace. Alone we can do nothing. But with God and in God, so much is possible that we have not even begun to imagine. Character is the greatest investment any of us can make. Begin to invest in yourself. Investing requires discipline, self-control, and patience. Many of us lack one or all of these qualities - and often we lack the wisdom and humility to ask God for his help. Think of it in the financial sense. If you save one dollar a day from the age of 22 until the age of 65 and invested that money at an average return of 7%, you would retire with close to four hundred thousand dollars. Three dollars a day would give you a million dollars, and yet, most people retire with little or no net worth. Is it because they couldn’t afford to set aside one, two or three dollars a day, or is it because they lacked the discipline, self-control, and patience? Very simply put, we live in a spending-centered society. Spending reflects ego, and saving reflects character. Most people have less than 1% of their annual income. Worse than that, millions spend more each year than they earn. Invest in yourself. Start to build a dynamic portfolio of virtues. Add all the great virtues to your character portfolio and watch your future blossom. Money and possessions have their appeal, rapidly advancing careers can fuel our egos, and pleasure can be ever so seductive, but character is what will see you through good times and bad. Make character your number-one priority in every sphere of your life. Put character first. Applying the Third Lesson - I will apply the 3rd lesson of discovering God’s dream for my life by taking the following steps: 1) I will put character first by making an investment in character. I will focus on one virtue at a time. 2) I will pursue rigorous honesty with myself and with others. 3) I will proactively nurture positive habits in each of the four areas of life: physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. 4) I will resist the constant demands of ego by listening more attentively to the voice of God in my life.

Catholic Social Teaching

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time- Healing was a special ministry of Jesus. Through healing, the sick were not only restored to health, but they were restored to community life – the community was healed as well. Who are the lepers of our society who are cast out and rejected? What healing do we need to welcome the immigrant; the poor; the prisoner coming out of jail? How are we called by our faith to challenge and heal our society by upholding the dignity of every person, especially those who are hated, marginalized or helpless?
