“Math Carnival”

n PROGRAM OVERVIEW “Math Carnival” is an evening

event that was designed to provide all parents and students the opportunity to experience hands on math activities in order to increase math skills.

Math Carnival takes place in two different locations on campus with the opportunity to participate in many math activities at both locations.

The cafeteria is transformed into “Estimation Alley”; parents and students can enjoy dinner provided by the school, carnival games, and an array of estimation jars set up for students to guess, “How Many”?

Our media center is transformed into a carnival like atmosphere with math stations. These math stations focus on hands-on, real world, make and take activities that the students and parents work on together. This helps to build capacity with the parents so they have ideas on how to work on math at home with their children. As parents move from station to station with their child, their ticket is stamped showing that they have completes each math activity.

After an evening of fun filled math activities, students and parents receive a goodie bag filled with double dice, paper tangrams, crayons, markers, and pentominoes.

n OVERALL VALUE The Math Carnival is a fabulous

idea for an after school activity. Parents usually know how to help with reading because it is more familiar to them and teachers tend to give out information regarding reading. However, it is hard for parents to really know and understand how they can help their children with math at home without sitting down with a pencil and worksheet in hand physically working the problems.

This night provides opportunities for parents and students to work on simple activities that are beneficial and fun for the students; since we have teachers participating that night, our teachers can talk to parents and get ideas out there on what else they can try at home.

The hands-on activities are engaging for all students and parents and each station allows the student to make and take home a sample.

n SUBJECTS COVERED Math

n GRADESPre K – 2nd, but can be adapted for any age group based on math skills at their appropriate grade level.

n OBJECTIVES • To participate in hands-on, make

and take math activities with their parents in order to build math skills at home.

n DIRECTIONS Two locations are used for our Math

Carnival Night. We split the parents in half and have 45 minute sessions in each location. We also provide translators to help if parents need that.

n EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT Each parent completed a survey

about Math Carnival Night

2012 - 2013 Idea Catalog of exCellenCe

1 - estimation alleyWe have 14 jars filled with different

things for students to Estimate. We filled jars with the following:

• money• crayons• toothpicks• candy• tiny plastic mice• blocks• links• paper clips• beans• popsicle sticks• plastic frogs• rubberbands• marbles• erasersPaper/crayons are provided to

put the estimation on with their name. Then the paper goes into a basket for that jar. Students along with help from their parents will estimate every jar. The following day, the results are read and students that have estimated the closest receive a puzzle for their prize.

2 - Carnival games and dinner

We set up Carnival games, board games, and dinner for the parents.

Carnival Games • bowling• bean bag toss• fishing game• pick a duck• milk bottle toss• football toss

Board GamesBoard Games are set up on the tables for parents and students to play during or after dinner. We provide:

• Operation• Sorry• Chutes and Ladders• Uno• Battleship• Scrabble Junior, and • I Spy.

Dinner Provided Pizza, Cookie, and juice or sweet tea

The following apply to all Lesson Plans

3 - Math StationsOrigami Directions were printed out on how

to make a cup and a sailboat. We used regular computer paper for the cup, and purchased origami paper for the sailboat. Parents and students, with the help of a station facilitator, will cut and then fold the paper according to the directions. This emphasizes the importance of following directions, and also measuring, shapes, and patience.

Double Dice In this station, we have double dice

(a clear colored die with another smaller die inside) and paper. The facilitator of this center shows how we use these in school to practice basic facts (Addition, subtraction and could even be used with multiplication).

Balloon Measurement This station needs paperclips and

helium balloons. The student and parent pairs guess how many paperclips it will take to weigh down the balloon, and then they test their

hypothesis by linking the paperclips together and adding one at a time.

Play dough This station involves following a

recipe and measuring. Students and parents (with station facilitator guidance) follow the play dough recipe and then cook the ingredients in the pot on the hot plate. The students then get the opportunity to roll out the play dough and practice making numbers and/or number sentences, and they take home play dough and the recipe.

Noodle Necklaces Prior to math carnival night Penne

noodles should be dyed using four different food colorings. Noodles are easily dyed using rubbing alcohol and food coloring in a bag over night and then dried for a few days. Yarn or string should be used so the students can make a pattern noodle necklace to wear home.

Pattern Blocks (Open Ended) Pattern block and pattern block

cards are set out for students to use to make pictures with the shapes.

Capacity Station (Open Ended) Use about 20 or 30 pounds of either

uncooked rice or beans in a large tote. Students use measuring cups and spoons to practice learning about capacity and how much something holds. (For example: Using a one cup measuring cup and a one gallon container, how many cups does it take to fill up the one gallon container?)

Tangrams Tangram Tiles are needed for this

center and shapes that can be made using the tangram pieces.

Pentominoes Color tiles are used in this station.

Pentominoes would be comparable to the game Tetris where you are taking a number of tiles to arrange

them into dif ferent shapes. In Tetris you only use four tiles, but in Pentominoes you use 5. They see how many different ways five tiles can be arranged. To take this a step further, you could provide graph paper so the student and parent can record the different ways they found.

Graphing We cover a wall with roll paper

and make a graph with predefined responses. Each person that attends the Math Carnival is invited to cast their vote. For example, we have used ice cream flavors. The flavors we chose were Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Mint Chocolate, Neapolitan, Butter Pecan, and Superman. Each person uses a pattern to cut out a construction paper scoop of ice cream to add to the picture graph. We display the graph in the cafeteria for a week after so the students can see the results.

Penny Flip Each participant needs a penny to

flip, a small heads/tails graph, and a pencil to tally with. The participant flips the penny 20 times and tallies heads or tails. They can then compare the differences between how many heads and how many tails were flipped.

Take Your Licks Each child needs a tally sheet,

pencil, and a small lollipop. The child will tally every time they lick the lollipop until it is gone. Then they can practice skip counting by 5 by counting the tallies.

Candy Corn Patterns A candy corn usually consists of

three colors (yellow, white, and orange). Using three colors, there are six different combinations for coloring a candy corn. We put 6 white pictures of candy corns on

one piece of paper, and provide yellow and orange crayons. The participants try to figure out the six different ways they could color the candy corns.

Make Game Boards Each participant receives a 11 by 13

piece of tag board. They use Avery dots to make spaces on their game board. Then they use stickers and markers to decorate it. Then each family makes their own math fact game cards to use with their game. For example, they could use basic addition facts.

Calendars ½ page calendars January –

December, 7 pieces of construction paper all folded in half to look like a book. Glue one month calendar to every other page in the book so that there is a space left to make a picture to go along with each month. Mark birthdays and holidays on their corresponding days.

What’s in a Name? Set a numerical value for every letter

of the alphabet (a-1, b-2, c-3, d-4, e-5, f-6, g-7, h-8, i-9, j-1, etc.) Then on a paper the child can find out how much their name is “worth”. (For example: Using the above letters and numerical values the name Abe would be 1+2+5=8.)

Write a Googol This station needs only a blank

hundreds chart and something to write with. They write 1 outside of the first box, and then fill in the boxes with 100 zeros to write out the numerical representation of a googol.

All families that attend receive a goodie bag with double dice, paper tangrams, crayons, markers, and pentominoes.
