P AGE 2 “IN TOUCH”
In Touch is the vehicle whereby activities within your parish can be shared with the wider community. Do you have anything to contribute? The closing date for the next In Touch Newsletter is
Wednesday, 13th August 2014. Articles can be emailed to: Parish Office at [email protected]
PASTOR’S DESK This month of June is marked by two major parish events the reopening of St Kieran's Church and our
parish First Communion Masses.
Since Easter we have been obliged to the St Cecilia's community for hosting all our parish liturgies and we
are indebted to their warm welcome and hospitality. Many non-regular Balgowlah parishioners
commented on how much at home they felt and their pleasure at being able to worship in their sister
church on a weekly basis as well as many a tale of past association with the church.
I have described the renovations of St Kieran's Church as a once in a generation moment for the parish.
Long-planned and long-discussed it is wonderful to see the labours of many over the past decade come to
fruition, albeit in a form that has constantly evolved and fluctuated. We hope that the major features of the work will please
the parish community as well as our visitors with its sense of freshness and attention to easier access and comfort. To begin to
adequately thank all those who have contributed would fill most of this page but I commend all for their support, patience and
thoughtful insights. Appropriately the anniversary of the dedication of the church occurs at this time so we were able to
celebrate the event in a proper manner.
Our First Communions also celebrated through the month of June bring to a conclusion another full year of the parish
sacramental program for over 150 families. It has been a joy to watch the children grow and to see their families involved and
we pray that they will continue to grow ever closer to Jesus in the years ahead. We also offer our thanks and congratulations to
the coordinator, Ricki Hayes, to the facilitators and of course, to the children themselves.
Next month the parish is planning its Annual General Meeting with a guest speaker and the nomination and election of offices
on the Parish Council. This will also be time for the parish community to take stock of the present and look to the future needs
of our parish.

The Completion of the Renovation of our Churches The completion of the renovation of our two parish churches, St Cecilia's and St Kieran's marks the end of a period of close to ten years since the twinning of the parishes of Balgowlah and Manly Vale. In September 2005 parishioners gathered to discern a joint ‘Mission Statement’, which addressed many aspirations and areas of intended service. The first aspirations concerned worship, and included the following advice: “Our liturgical environments need to be examined for renewal opportunities that might increase participation and strengthen our ability to conduct the rites of the Church with dignity and grace.” As a means to achieve that end a wide consultation was conducted, a document entitled Concepts for Renewing Our Places of Worship was drawn up and an ongoing Parish Renewal Team was established.
An exhaustive exploration of the various options for both churches was examined in the ensuing years and in 2012 the interior refurbishment of St Cecilia's was undertaken and completed before Christmas.
After further deliberation regarding the possibilities and limitations at St Kieran's Church, a plan for the renewal of the church was approved at all levels in the parish, diocese and Warringah Council by the middle of 2013.
Work finally began immediately after Easter this year and St Kieran's Church was closed for the duration. The parish community is grateful to the Balgowlah community for their generous hosting of all parish masses and ceremonies through that period.
The Scope of the Work It had already been determined as part of ongoing maintenance work to replace the church roof and this was included in the wider-ranging renovations brief. The Baptismal area had already been relocated to the front of the sanctuary with the original font restored
to regular use. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel has been relocated to the position previously occupied by the Mother of
Good Counsel Shrine with the shrine itself being moved to the previous music area. The existing Reconciliation Room on the Southern side has been relocated to the Northern side allowing the
new music area to be housed on the South. The audio-visual equipment throughout has been updated and refurbished. Lighting throughout the church
has been replaced and the ceiling has been repainted. Climate control features include carpeting throughout, installation of fans and heaters and ventilation
features in the lantern of the church. A side door at the main entrance has been widened to accommodate a disability access facility.
Externally landscaping and paving will enhance the area beside the church and create an attractive environment for gathering. The vestibule (narthex) of the church has been refurbished to create a more open and welcoming entrance to the church. The ceilings of the church have also been painted. Parishioners have taken up offers to dedicate new stained glass windows on the Sothern side of the Church or to sponsor elements of the exterior landscaping features. The windows will incorporate one dedicated to Saint Kieran, the church patron, and allusions to both the Northern Beaches and to the music ministry. The work was completed on schedule for the weekend of 7/8 June in time for the parish First Communions. An official acknowledgement of the renewal was held on Sunday 15th June, appropriately the anniversary of the dedication of St Kieran's Church.

Fantastic Response for Asylum Seeker Centre Appeal. At an assembly held on Friday the 23rd of May, students at St.
Cecilia’s presented 10 enormous baskets of goods to Kate Connors
from the North Harbour Parish Social Justice Group. The students
and their families had been collecting the goods in response to the
parish Asylum Seeker Centre Appeal.
The goods completely filled two large vehicles and they were then
transported to the Asylum Seeker Centre in Newtown.
Representatives from the ASC were overwhelmed by the generosity
of the students and said the goods could not have arrived at a better
time as they were running short of supplies.
There was also a fantastic response from students at St Kieran’s
School, St Augustine’s College and the North Harbour Parish community as a whole.
Goods are still being transported to the Asylum Seekers Centre as a result of
peoples’ wonderful generosity.
Congratulations to our RCIA and RCIC candidates who received the
Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion during the Easter Vigil.

80th Birthday—15th May 2014
NEWS FROM ST KIERAN’S SCHOOL On Thursday 15 th May our Kevin celebrated his 80th birthday and the school community recognised and
acknowledged Kevin in a very special way by holding a special Assembly in his honour. We are very blessed to
have such a wonderful volunteer that is so committed to our school; the families, staff and students. Kevin plays
a very important role within the school; he is a role model for our community and a constant ‘mate’ to so many
of us who enter through the school gate. The children responded so warmly and enthusiastically to the assembly
for our Kevin. We thank God for the very special gift of our Kevin!
National Families Week During the week of 16th to 21st May it was National Families week. It was a time to celebrate what family really
means to us all. All families at school were encouraged to make contact with extended family and friends and to
share in the enjoyment of family activities. This week was intended to focus on the meaning of family and for
us all to make the most of family life. As we all know families play a critical role in teaching, supporting and
nurturing children especially as they grow , and also in supporting older people in our community. National
Families week coincided with International Day for Families on 15thMay.
The children at St Kieran’s were each given an additional homework grid to work through , which had nine various activities on,
ranging from washing the car together to writing a poem or deScription about their family on. It was a very enjoyable thing to do that
enabled everyone to get together as a family and perhaps do things that families wouldn’t normally do together!
P AGE 7 “IN TOUCH”
The beginning of June marked the third and final appeal for the financial year to the Charitable Works
Fund (CWF). Envelopes for donations to the Charitable Works Fund are available in the parish office
and in the foyer of the Churches and can be left on the collection plate or at the office.
As the figures below show we are well short of our quota and have a long way to go before we even
match the amounts donated in previous years. In the event there is a shortfall between our quota and the
amount donated by parishioners, as has been the case in the last few years, the shortfall has to be made up from general parish
funds (the second collection) so your generosity would be appreciated.
Donations to the CWF are 100% tax deductable. If you have not yet made a contribution or might be considering a further
contribution any donation received prior to June 28 will be deductable this financial year.

GIFT UPDATE Dalwood Drive: Thank you North Harbour for your generous response to GIFT's latest items drive for Dalwood
Spilstead Service. We were overwhelmed with your generosity. Most of Dalwood's families' needs were met by you (with some items several times over!). We are currently speaking with the Asylum Seeker Centre and Manly Women's Shelter to see if the excess donations can be used by them. We are still looking for two more wooden rocking chairs for the Dalwood Centre to support breast-feeding mums. If you have one that you no longer use, please email us at [email protected] to arrange a pick-up. Cook-offs: The GIFT Cook-offs are up and running. Only three open dates left to book in a team: 24th July, 23rd Oct and 20th Nov. Daytime (11am-2pm) or evening time (6pm-9pm) available. Rally your friends and come and cook for local families in stress. All meals distributed for free via the Link Community Food Care Program and Balgowlah SVdP.
