“Then Jesus said to him, ‘Be gone Satan, for it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve’” Matthew 4:10

What, exactly, is worship? Our English word worship comes from an Old English term, worth-ship. As the angels sing with all of creation, “Wor-thy is the Lamb, who was slain” (Rev. 5:12), so the church today meets with the Lamb to rejoice in His worth-ship. Among the Greek words used to describe worship in the New Testa-ment, two are especially helpful. When tempted by Satan, Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy: “Be gone Satan, for it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve’”(Matt. 4:10). Notice the words worship and serve. The two words are the Greek verbs proskuneo and latreuo. The first describes the attitude of our worship: we bow down before our majestic God. The second defines the action of worship: we serve Him with our praise and obedience. While all of life is worship (Rom. 12:1-11), there is also formal, public and corporate worship where praise is offered by God’s people to the sover-eign Lord. Today, even as in David’s day, God’s worshippers “sing for joy to the Lord” and “shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation” (Psalm 95:1), and we “bow down in worship” and “kneel before the Lord our Maker (Psalm 95:6). The outward command to worship comes from God Himself, whose very nature demands our praise. The inner compulsion emerges from hearts full of gratitude and love toward God. When true worship is offered, God is present to receive it. As Jesus said, the Father seeks worshippers who will worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23).

God Hears Our Confession and Praise(Congregation Stand) The Confession of Faith (from the Ligonier Statement of Christology)

We confess the mystery and wonder of God made flesh and rejoice in our great salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.

With the Father and the Holy Spirit, the Son created all things, sustains all things, and makes all things new. Truly God, He became truly man, two natures in one person.

He was born of the Virgin Mary and lived among us. Crucified, dead, and buried, He rose on the third day, ascended to heaven, and will come again in glory and judgment.

For us, He kept the Law, atoned for sin, and satisfied God’s wrath.

He is our Prophet, Priest, and King, building His church, interceding for us, and reigning over all things.

Jesus Christ is Lord; we praise His holy Name forever. Amen.

The Confession of Sin (please use the prayer below as a guide)

Merciful God, you made me in your image, with a mind to know you, a heart to love you, and a will to serve you. But my knowledge is imperfect, my love inconstant, my obedience incomplete. Day by day, I fail to grow into your likeness. In your tender love, forgive me through Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, Amen.

The Assurance of Pardon Titus 3:4-6

“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he

poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”

The Offertory cornErstonE Kirchner

O the stone that the builders rejected became the cornerstone of a whole new world. A grain of wheat may be knocked to the ground and suffer through the winter’s cold, only to rise right up again and bear its seed a thousand fold. Never can our journey fail; a little child will lead the way, whose eyes are filled with a shining light, to whom the night is bright as day. The love that rolls the stone away gives us life that we may sing, “Grave, where is thy victory? Death, O death, where is thy sting? The cornerstone of a whole new world.
