In a world full of apathy and low expectations, two northeast artists—MCA (Boston) and Magmo (Rhode Island)—descend upon New York through billowy clouds of fire to tear the city apart. On Saturday, August 20th , the barriers between artwork and art viewer will be broken down; the human limits of over-stimulation will be shattered; and conceptions of what a gallery experience is supposed to be like will be changed forever. There will be enough granite to crush the skulls of 20 men, an army of trash-filled dolls, ear-bleeding noise beats, and rays upon rays of eye-dazzling projections. Plus drawings, paintings, skateboards, custom toys, screen prints, T-shirts, and stickers—every inch of the gallery will be covered. And some of the amazing Suicide Girls will be on hand to help orchestrate a parade of erections.

MCA and Magmo began working together when they were invited to do live screen printing at GUM magazine’s Mr. Rogers tribute show “Fred Was Here” last year. The show went so well that the two artists began collaborating on graphics, did another live screen printing event at the Delancey, and were asked again by GUM to “perform” at the magazine’s release party out in Los Angeles. Both artists have also been busy participating in gallery shows in Boston, Philadelphia, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and were recently part of the Mr. T doll show “I Pity the Doll” at the Orchard Street Art Gallery.

MCA is best known as the mastermind behind Evil Design. If you picked up Kid 606’s acclaimed The Action Packed Mentalist Brings You the Fucking Jams CD, or own a T-shirt from Weezer’s Pinkerton world tour, or from Mission of Burma’s recent string of “Inexplicable” reunion shows, then you’ve seen his work. He’s also becoming a well-known name in the world of toy design, having recently released a Wizard Circus Punk, as well as an original vinyl figure based on his Evil Ape character. This figure and 33 new 2” Qees, also based on the Evil Ape, are being produced by the Hong Kong toy company Toy2R.

Magmo is here to help. Magmo is here to destroy. Magmo started making and distributing stickers and stencil work in and around the Boston area, but has since evolved into illustrating short stories and creating hand-made dolls, silk-screen prints, and paintings. Magmo combines super-stylized, punk inspired illustrations with text to create a collage of artwork that tells cautionary tales about everything from deadly, trans-fatty monsters and gas-guzzling families, to radioactive octopuses, fire monkeys, and even hardcore party koalas. Magmo likes to destroy the bad things in life that try to destroy us, such as pollution, greed, urban sprawl, the healthcare system, big business, and war. Magmo is currently working on a Destroy children’s book and will also have artwork included in “Monztaaah,” which will be edited by Belio Magazine (Spain) and released later this year.
