Cross-Shattered Christby Rick Beerhorst

Rick created these images for a book titled “Cross-

Shattered Christ: Meditations on the Seven Last

Words” by Stanley Hauerwas. Rick reflects on the

project: “Cross-Shattered Christ helped take me

deeper into Jesus again. I don’t really like going to

the cross - I usually feel like the man who was forced

into carrying Jesus’s Cross with him. And yet I know

I need to keep going to the cross because every time

I do I get a little more free. So for the artist, a project

like this becomes a kind of spiritual exercise. Search-

ing for images and refining them actually carries me

deeper into the presence of God.

These pictures were done in wood block printing pro-

cess, beginning with pencil sketches, transferred to a

block of birch plywood, carved, inked and printed.

This process of making a printed image is very simple

and unchanged for thousands of years.
