A Cambridge, MA university recently awarded Antony Gormley a commission to design and install his latest sculpture, “CHORD” in the staircase of its mathematics building.
Summit Metal Fabricators (SMF) was selected by Gormley Studios to fabricate and install the sculpture for its AISC certified teams, skilled project managers and its ”clean” shop space, ensuring Gormley Studios that no impurities would get into the intricate stainless steel welds required for the work.
Utilizing specialized jigging and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) manufactured templates allowed SMF’s skilled fabrication team to precisely manufacturer and assemble every node and element within the massive 56 foot tall sculpture. All welding for this sculpture was via the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) process.

It took Summit Metal Fabricators only 1 month to installthe work within the mathematics building stairwell, which was protected during the construction and assembly phases by reinforced poly, keeping the staircases and the work site clean and safe for student travel between floors.

Summit Metal Fabricators designed and fabricated this hoisting system that allowed the six sculpture sections to be assembled at ground-level and then raised into position.
It has been a pleasure in every way to deal with such a highly motivated and well balanced team at Summit and we have thoroughly enjoyed and learned from our experience with them.
I am more than grateful, I feel that we have made something extraordinary and am confident that we have got the best result possible. Antony Gormley - April, 2016
