THE STORY! 3 “Community” alum Donald Glover salutes the area where he grew up with the seriocomic FX series “Atlanta,” premiering Tuesday. He tells Jay Bobbin about weaving the story of two cousins involved in the rap-music business around his own personal and professional experiences.

12-13 Three crooked tech entrepreneurs try to manipulate a digital currency for their own nefarious ends in Crackle’s “StartUp.” George Dickie talks with series stars Martin Freeman and Edi Gathegi about the storyline and their characters.

14-15 A Vietnam vet who is having trouble assimilating back into 1970s Memphis society finds himself at the mercy of a nefarious party who wants to use him as a paid assassin in Cinemax’s “Quarry.” George Dickie gets the lowdown on what to expect from series star Logan Marshall-Green.

17 The premium-channel debut of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” marks a rare approach, since it will premiere on all six Starz channels simultaneously Saturday. Jay Bobbin writes about the significance of that simulcast, and about the fllm’s theatrical success.

Editor's choice STORY

BY JAY BOBBINIn honoring the area where he was raised, Donald Glover wants “Atlanta” to be unpredictable ... just like life.

The former “30 Rock” writer and “Community” co-star wears many hats including actor, writer and executive producer on the FX series that premieres with two episodes Tuesday, Sept. 6. He draws his other career as a rap artist – under the name Childish Gambino – into the saga of promising rapper Alfred (played by Brian Tyree Henry), who’s being guided by his manager cousin Earn (Glover). Though the show is billed as a comedy, it can and does turn quickly toward dramatic and even violent content, and Glover doesn’t mind keeping viewers on their toes.

“There really isn’t a limit, I feel, to how abstract you can get as long as you believe it,” he reasons. “There has to be some sort of grounded nature to something so people don’t start being like, ‘I don’t believe this,’ and then they turn the channel. if you have something that is grounded on some level, you can go anywhere. People want to go there with you if you do, but you just have to have it so people are like, ‘OK. They are guided by their own rules every step of the way.’”

Despite his own background in music, Glover determined early in developing “Atlanta” that he didn’t want to play the rap artist “because that would be weird. I wouldn’t have enjoyed that. It’s possible to do that, but then it actually makes it harder for me to do (the show). It just clouds a lot of things. I think it just wouldn’t be fun as much.

“If David Bowie made a show about him being a rock star, you could definitely watch it ... but then there’s some times you’d be, like, ‘Is this dude playing me a little bit? Like, what’s going on?’ There’s a level of magic realism and

suspended disbelief that you need for all genres, and it’s important to me as an artist to keep those intact.”

Glover prides himself on using many Atlanta-area actors in the 10-episode first

season that was filmed on location.

Co-star Henry also was raised there, and

he notes, “There are different worlds in Atlanta.

The absurdity for one person is the reality for another, and we

just take it as it is. And I think that’s what’s so special about that city, that it is

always constantly growing and changing.

“Most people feel that they can’t go down there and learn anything from Atlanta,” adds Henry, “when I actually feel like Atlanta has so much more to teach every other major city. It’s the one little hub that I feel that allows other people to come in and bring what they want and also expand what

we already have and already have discovered. And I just love that.”

As “Atlanta” weaves its own story, Glover hopes for viewers to get to know the city better “so when you come to Atlanta, hopefully, it will feel like people who watch this will sort of feel like they are on a ride ... like when you go to Universal Studios and you are, ‘I’m really in Hogwarts.’ I think if we are going to do that, let’s really show that. Let’s show both sides of that.”

FOLIO

HENRY WINKLER

In the first episode of “Better Late Than Never,” you mentioned that doing the voice was how you were able to create the Fonz character for “Happy Days.” Is that true? That is true, that once I changed my voice in the audition it unlocked me and I just said anything that came to my mind.

So at that point, you were the Fonz?I started to create him in the room at the audition for my wonderful, late, great (series creator) Garry Marshall. You know, Sir Laurence Olivier only could play a character once he found the nose. He would create and change his nose with makeup putty, and once he found the nose of the character it gave him enough of a key to start to create whatever the brilliance was he did.

The wardrobe helps a lot.It helps a lot. There’s an old exercise from Commedia del’arte in the 15th century. You put on a piece of clothing or you put on a mask and you just stand in front of the mirror, you say not one word, and on its own your body starts to change and your posture changes and your shoulders move and all of a sudden a voice starts to come. You know, I did it at Yale in the drama school. That’s why I learned it. But it’s shockingly effective.

Did you use that with the Fonz at all with the black leather jacket? No, I just used the voice. Remember, I didn’t get the black leather jacket until the second year. I wore a cloth jacket because ABC thought I would be associated with crime.

Others in the “Happy Days” cast say Marshall encouraged them to branch out and take on roles other than acting. Did he do that with you?Yes, he did. He encouraged us in every way. He was my Don and I will still kiss his metaphorical ring.

JON VOIGHT You now have your second Emmy nomination for playing Mickey on “Ray Donovan.” What are your thoughts about it?I’m very lucky to be part of the consideration for that award. I’m working with a team of brilliant people, and I’ve got a role that catches whatever talent I have. It illuminates it and gives me a playground, and the audience likes it, so it’s great.

You’ve said that your work in the movie “Runaway Train” factored strongly into your “Ray Donovan” opportunity. In what way? That was a turning point in my acting life, to be asked to do that character. I had to come up with a new persona, which became an avenue to do a lot of other pieces ... and those, in concert with “Runaway Train,” were the reasons they came to me to play Mickey Donovan.

You recently produced and starred in the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries film “J.L. Family Ranch.” What made you want to make that?It had a nice feel to it. It was reminiscent of many things, and that’s the way we are. You look at the (political) conventions and see people coming together, and it’s very moving, really. You see people trying to solve problems and encourage each other. A convention is really nothing more than a big town meeting.

Besides fellow acting veterans James Caan and Melanie Griffith, you also wanted Teri Polo of Freeform’s “The Fosters” in “J.L. Family Ranch.” Why?Each one of those people was very strong in it, but my friend Teri is a person I really have great admiration for. I’m an encourager of her serious work, because she’s a very, very fine actress. I got the cast I wanted ... and I think we’re going to do another one, because the conclusion left it a little up in the air as to what comes next.

GEORGE DICKIE’S Q&A

Eph seems like a pretty functional alcoholic, at least judging from the first few episodes of Season 3. Is he?Yeah (laughs) I mean it’s not really sort of that traditional narrative of immediately hitting bottom. It’s a low plateau but it seems to be pretty much a plateau – he doesn’t seem about to take an abstinence pledge anytime soon. ... We’re certainly not trying to advocate anything (laughs) on the show but actually I think it’s something that makes Eph sort of tolerable to some of the people around him. He can be pretty arrogant and so at least with the alcohol he’s sort of entertaining.

Is he a fun character to play, drunk or sober?Yeah, he’s a fun character. He’s obviously somebody who’s incredibly capable and smart and driven. But (he is) countering the most absurdly resilient foe that one can imagine and he’s somebody who’s been successful his whole life and then suddenly there’s this set of obstacles that are seemingly insurmountable. But one thing that’s really sort of great about this show and one that Carlton (Cuse, the showrunner) is sort of constantly sort of infusing the show with is a sense of adventure as opposed to just horror. I think horror is a hard thing to maintain over the course of a series. But adventure, there’s sort of a sense of joy of discovery and the sense of there’s a goal that we’re working toward. And for all the arrogance and bitterness and alcoholism of Eph, there is this incredibly optimistic side to him and he’s absolutely determined to solve this problem. So that’s a fun set of contradictions to play.

TASTYGEORGE DICKIE’S WHAT'S FOR DINNER

When was the last vacation you took, where and why?

“I have been traveling for the show, so that’s more like work. I guess the last vacation I took was last Christmas and New Year’s, and I went to Kauai with my family. I went with Matty (Rosenberg, her fiancé) and Ryan for New Year’s.”

What book are you currently reading?

“Sad but true, when Ryan was first born, I was able to read so many books and then now the books I’m reading, it’s almost like I’m starting from the beginning. I’m reading ‘ABCs.’ I’m reading all the basics with Ryan. The last book I got to read for myself was ‘The Girl on the Train,’ which feels like a long time ago now. When you have a 1-year-old, your free time really isn’t so free anymore.”

What is your next project?

“I just started working on my book proposal, and hopefully the second season of ‘Haylie’s America.’ ”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“Airplane food. Isn’t that sad? I had a salad on the airplane. (Laughs)”

Haylie Duff wears many hats: actress, producer, food blogger and mother of an active 1-year-old daughter. Now she adds to her resume host of her own foodie/travel series, Cooking Channel’s “Haylie’s America.”

Premiering Thursday, Sept. 8, the 30-minute program takes the 31-year-old Houston native to various locales around the country to visit with friends, explore local food scenes and go on adventures.

“It’s a mix of places that I love and wanted to share with people and places that I always have wanted to visit ...,” she explains. “One of the things I really love about this new series is that I’m kind of getting to share favorite cities and also explore places with the audience as well.”

Over eight episodes, the host of “The Real Girl’s Kitchen” samples gourmet ice cream in Denver with former “7th Heaven” co-star Beverley Mitchell, dines on poke burritos with actress Alanna Masterson (“The Walking Dead”), has a pre-concert “Coffee Talk” with Trisha Yearwood in Las Vegas and goes on an oyster excursion in New Orleans.

In Thursday’s series opener, she heads to Santa Barbara, Calif., with actor and fellow foodie Jonathan Bennett (“Cupcake Wars”) for an epic cheat day in which they devour beer-batter-and-cheese-infused waffle sandwiches, smoked tri tip brisket and a triple chop sandwich and, of course, bake cupcakes.

“I did a chocolate and wine (cupcake) because I was trying to keep it a little classy,” Duff says. “And Jonathan, of course, his cupcakes were filled with bourbon because he’s never to be outdone, of course. We did a little ‘Cake Wars’-style competition.”

“I’m not really known for my baking skills,” she continues. “That’s one thing that I have always sort of shied away from, like I can never really follow directions – in the kitchen or in life in general – so baking has never been my thing, my strong suit. So for me when the task is to bake them, I’m like, ‘Oh great.’ But I jumped into it because Jonathan put me up to the challenge, so I did pretty good. I’ll let you see the episode to see who wins the cupcake war.”

After many years as a member of the Fox Broadcasting family, partially in voice-only roles, Pamela Adlon now has her eye set on “Better Things.”

The distinctively raspy “Louie” and “Californication” alum not only stars in the seriocomic FX series – premiering Thursday, Sept. 8 – but also is its co-creator (with Louis C.K.), frequent writer, sometimes director and an executive producer. Adlon plays Sam Fox, an actress and single mother who finds constant challenges in raising her three daughters (Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, Olivia Edward) and dealing with a neighbor who also happens to be her mother (Celia Imrie).

“I just feel like everything is funny in my life,” Adlon explains of her “Better Things” approach, “and there is a lot of funny in the darkness. I guess I like things that just feel real, and I don’t like anything that’s dark without a heart. I just feel like there’s really no category for this kind of thing. It’s not comedy or dramedy. It’s like ‘The Incredible Feelings Show.’ ”

An Emmy winner for her vocal work as Bobby Hill on the animated “King of the Hill,” Adlon also has lent her sound to many other cartoons including “Bob’s Burgers,” “WordGirl,” “Phineas and Ferb,” “Thundercats” and “Beavis and Butt-Head.” Though “Better Things” is semiautobiographical, she knows where to draw the line in terms of referencing others.

“I’m very aware of things that would be too personal,” she maintains, “and my daughters know that I wouldn’t co-op their lives. But my dad would always say, ‘Write what you know,’ and all my daughters are writers. I don’t walk into a room and go, ‘Wait. Hang on. I’ve got to go write what just happened’ ... although I do that with my mother. She walks into the kitchen, and I just get out a pen and go, ‘Go,’ because I know it’s just going to be material for me.”

STORY

BY GEORGE DICKIE Digital currency is a topic that many outside the tech and economic fields might consider too esoteric to grasp. But that hasn’t stopped the streaming service Crackle from creating a drama about it in a gripping new series debuting this week.

In “StartUp,” which drops with 10 hourlong episodes on Tuesday, Sept. 6, Adam Brody (“The O.C.,” “Growing Up and Other Lies”) stars as Nick Talman, a whiz-kid financier at a boutique firm in Miami who suddenly finds himself in possession of a stash of ill-gotten cash courtesy of his wealthy and irresponsible father, who has disappeared. Rather than go to the FBI, Nick elects to hide the loot by investing in a tech startup firm headed by Izzy Morales (Otmara Marrero, “Graceland”), who has written the code for a digital currency that could revolutionize world finance.

But it turns out the money belongs to a Haitian gang, and their second in command, Ronald Dacey (Edi Gathegi, “The Blacklist”), pays a visit to Nick to get it back. When that proves impossible, the three disparate souls are forced by circumstance into an unlikely partnership.

And they’ve attracted the attention of Phil Rask (Martin Freeman, “The Hobbit” movie trilogy), an FBI agent originally on the trail of Nick’s dad and his loot. He’s frustrated by bureaucratic red tape and disillusioned by colleagues on the take, and in Nick and his partners, he sees the possible payday his cohorts have been getting for years.

previous page - “He’s a volcano that’s about to blow, really,” Freeman says of

his character. “You join him at a point where he’s reached a crossroads in his professional and personal

lives, where he has seen other people, for want of a better phrase, kind of take advantage of the American dream and get

rich by cutting corners. And he has tried to play the game with a straight back and now he thinks, ‘Well, actually, why should I anymore?

If everyone else is doing it, I’ve tried to do this the straight way, it’s not really getting me anywhere.’

“Also it’s not getting results ...,” he continues. “He wasn’t even bringing down bad guys, really, because bad guys can always get off because of money. ... He feels his job is kind of worthless from a justice point of view, so I think he’s thinking now, ‘Well f... it, I’m gonna join in if everyone else is doing it.’ ”

In Rask, Freeman welcomed the chance to flex a few new acting muscles playing an angry, intimidating FBI agent, certainly a marked departure from more genteel characters he’s played in the past, such as John Watson in the PBS series “Sherlock” and Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit” movies.

“I’m not a big guy,” Freeman says, “so it’s kind of slightly more interesting when you make someone of my stature a person

who when they walk into a room makes people go ‘Oh, hang on. Who’s this guy?’ Which is fun. It’s fun

from just an acting point of view.”

BY GEORGE DICKIEMac Conway is a man who’s been given a raw deal.

As played by Logan Marshall-Green (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Prometheus”) in the hourlong drama series “Quarry,” premiering Friday, Sept. 9, on Cinemax, he’s returned from two tours of duty in Vietnam in 1972 to find himself shunned by his loved ones and demonized by the public he fought for.

As he tries to re-adapt to life with wife Joni (Jodi Balfour, “Final Destination 5”) in his hometown of Memphis, Tenn., he struggles with PTSD and nightmares over a massacre he took part in. And without a job, he soon finds himself drawn with best friend and battle comrade Arthur (Jamie Hector, “The Wire”) into a network of killing and corruption by a man known only as The Broker (Peter Mullan, “Olive Kitteridge”).

The Broker is a crafty man. So dubbed because he acts as middle man and point person between clients and his network of killers, he knows Mac is unemployed and in need of a job, and this line of work pays well. And having killed in Vietnam, Mac has the type of experience and skill The Broker is looking for. In this state, Mac is easily manipulated.

Minus the killing, it’s a character that strikes close to home for the actor who plays him.

“Mac is based pretty much on my father ...,” Marshall-Green explains. “My dad is an older generation and it was essential that we find a Mac immersed in a progressive ‘70s feminist movement and the ousting of the macho male, essentially. And so I played him a bit like a dinosaur.

“You know, he’s rough around the edges and he smokes Pall Mall unfiltered and he drinks coffee black and he has a short temper and would never let a woman pay for him. He still is the guy who would stand when a woman leaves the table. And I wanted to infuse that morality of the ‘50s in him. You know, my dad flew in World War II, so again he was a different kind of vet but he’s the vet closest to me.”

As the season progresses and the killings mount, Mac struggles to reconcile himself with the violence he has wrought, both here and during the war, and takes what Marshall-Green describes as “spiritual penalties.” For the actor, that meant making Mac an unsympathetic character and an anti-hero.

“I don’t expect, nor do I really want the audience, to root for Mac’s actions or even to like him at times,” he says. “I don’t want him likable at times. I want him hard and grizzled and hard to be in a relationship with, a marriage with.

“But it’s my job to make you love him no matter what,” he continues, “and to attach yourself emotionally with him and to understand the emotional penalties he’s going through with this violence because let’s be honest, it’s a whole different climate right now that this show’s coming out in. So it’s up to us to make sure that we earn every single bit of violence and never glorify.”

BY JAY BOBBINAs Katie Couric and many other celebrities continue their stand against cancer, they’re getting a big assist from Bradley Cooper.

The multiple Oscar nominee lost his father to the disease in 2011 and – much as current Yahoo global news anchor Couric did after it claimed her first husband, attorney Jay Monahan, and her Virginia-senator sister Emily – he’s channeling the loss into action as an executive producer of, and participant in, the fifth special to benefit the Couric-co-founded Stand Up to Cancer initiative. Airing Friday, Sept. 5, on approximately 50 networks in the U.S. and Canada simultaneously, the show combines performances with informational segments aimed at increasing financial support for medical research to find cures.

“When I think about what has been accomplished, not only the money we’ve raised but the paradigm shift this has helped accelerate, I am filled with such enormous pride and admiration for everyone in this community,” Couric says of those who have participated in the cancer-battling Entertainment Industry Foundation program. “This is the most important work I do, and I’m just so gratified to be a part of it and to play a role.”

The many other celebrities booked for this year’s special include Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Anna Kendrick, Emma Stone, Josh Gad, “Modern Family’s” Eric Stonestreet, Alison Sweeney, Ken Jeong (“Dr. Ken”) and Niecy Nash. Celine Dion (who lost her manager husband Rene Angelil to throat cancer last January), Keith Urban and Little Big Town are slated to render songs.

Cooper’s involvement this year is, Couric reasons, an example of “how effective star power can be in spreading the message and capturing people’s attention, and I think

Bradley’s willingness and enthusiasm is the proverbial icing on the cake. We have been just thrilled to have the participation of so many people in the Hollywood community, and they have given so generously of their time and talent.

“I think that speaks to the fact that cancer does not discriminate,” adds Couric. “It affects everyone from all walks of life everywhere in the country and the world. This is personal for everyone.” Indeed, this year, people are invited to submit related photos and videos using the social-media hashtag #Reasons2StandUp; some of the contributions will be shown on the telecast.

Though the Stand Up to Cancer specials – which have aired every two years since 2008 – are among its focal points, the campaign is a year-round effort that manifests itself in many ways. “I think it’s hard to miss the presence of Stand Up to Cancer,” Couric says, “whether you’re talking about the All-Star Game of Major League Baseball, or that MasterCard does a huge campaign for us, or that there are Stand Up to Cancer posters at airports and public-service announcements in magazines … we are relentlessly on message 365 days a year, 24/7.

“That’s really because of the scientists,” Couric stresses. “We really want to do everything we can to help them help us, because without the research dollars, they can’t continue to do their work. We’re in such a critical time when it comes to new discoveries in the treatment of cancer, we cannot take our foot off the gas pedal. They are really the superstars in this whole endeavor, the people who and brilliant and selfless and working tirelessly in anonymous labs all across the country, with very little recognition. Those are the people we do this for.”

BY JAY BOBBINNot every movie can command several television channels simultaneously.

Then again, not every movie bears the title “Star Wars.”

It took a while for the original films in the enormously popular, George Lucas-created series of sci-fi fantasies to reach TV, but not so with the latest chapter. Nine months after its theatrical debut, the J.J. Abrams-directed “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is coming to premium cable in a very big way – premiering across all six Starz channels simultaneously on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Having “The Force Awakens” clearly is a big deal for Starz, and it marks the end of a deal: It’s the last Disney-distributed film to be shown by the network as its contract for the studio’s movie product ends. Going forward, Disney’s main outlet for its big-screen offerings will be Netflix ... but that doesn’t mean the seventh “Star Wars” theatrical adventure won’t stick around Starz for a while, thanks not only to the channels but such other avenues as Starz on Demand and the Starz App. (It also doesn’t hurt December’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” by serving as an unofficial teaser now.)

As was anticipated, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” received a thunderous response upon its release, in box-office terms alone. To date, the generally well-reviewed

film has grossed $2 billion-plus internationally, and its influence can be seen in ways including the naming of Syfy’s recent “Sharknado: The 4th Awakens.” It also prompted those behind the Critics’ Choice Awards to poll voters who ultimately approved including it in last January’s honors, though the eligibility deadline had closed before the movie opened.

In terms of pleasing audiences, “The Force Awakens” brings back beloved characters from the original

saga – perhaps most notably Han Solo (played again by Harrison Ford),

who figures into the action prominently as he and

sidekick Chewbacca aim to retrieve

their Millennium Falcon, acquired

by scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley) and a defecting Stormtrooper dubbed Finn (John Boyega). Once united, they oppose sinister First Order commander

Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

Though its profit makes it evident

that many people have seen “Star Wars:

The Force Awakens,” it would be unfair to spoil its

surprises for those who may experience it for the first time via

Starz. That said, the Force being in six places at once leaves no surprise about the event

its latest example’s television arrival is deemed to be.

The Denver Broncos would not have won Super Bowl 50 without linebacker Von Miller. The reigning Super Bowl champs and their Super Bowl MVP host a familiar opponent, the Carolina Panthers in the 2016 NFL season “kickoff” game that will be a Super Bowl rematch on Thursday, Sept. 8, on NBC.

While the Panthers and quarterback Cam Newton will seek to atone for their 24-10 Super Bowl embarrassment at the hands of Miller and the Broncos top-rated defense from 2015, Denver’s offense will have to sort out their quarterback situation for this game.

Back in June, Miller signed a new contract making him the highest paid defensive player ever in the NFL. Up to this point he’s done everything that’s been expected of him since he came into the league in 2011; a year in which he was honored as the defensive Rookie of the Year. He was taken as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft behind only Newton.

In Super Bowl 50, Miller ironically harassed Newton the entire game, earning 2.5 sacks off the mobile quarterback and forcing two fumbles; one of which resulted in an early touchdown. His efforts earned him the game MVP honors. The Broncos have built an aggressive defense around him which culminated in their Super Bowl victory.

In just five seasons Miller already has 60 sacks, and is the third fastest player to reach 50. A healthy career should place him among the all time sack leaders.VONMILLER

If you were going to remake “The Dirty Dozen” and set it in the world of superheroes, you’d pretty much have “Suicide Squad.”

The idea is that the bad guys get to become the good guys in the latest movie based on DC Comics characters. The fact that they can be so reckless is what makes them – and the movie, written and directed by David Ayer – entertaining.

There are elements of such other pictures as “The Expendables” and “Escape From New York” as the government prisoners get to reduce their sentences by tackling seemingly suicidal missions ... thus making them the Suicide Squad.

And what an oddly assorted team. Will Smith plays always accurate assassin Deadshot, Jay Hernandez portrays fire-loving Diablo, Margot Robbie is the Joker-inspired Harley Quinn, and even The Joker himself is present here as played by Jared Leto (an interesting casting choice, but not the best one ever made for the role, as Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson’s earlier work supports).

Joel Kinnaman also stars as the military man assigned to keep them in line, akin to Lee Marvin’s “Dirty Dozen” major with just as thankless a job. Such a part keeps it

hard for an actor to make his mark when the others around him are so colorful, but it must be said that Kinnaman gives it a good try.

As with the Marvel movies, there are efforts to link “Suicide Squad” to other films within the DC Universe, some of them of very recent vintage. So as not to give away surprises, let’s just say that if you’ve seen some of those recent pictures, you should be satisfied with that effort ... particularly since “Suicide Squad” has the same grim

look that makes it a good tonal match for those other movies.

It’s a definite leap to buy fully into the premise of the picture, since to do so, you have to root for characters whose actions largely aren’t the sort you normally cheer for. That is the very fiber of the story, though, and a failure to reorient inevitably will translate into disappointment with the film.

If you like your superheroes as upstanding straight arrows, “Suicide Squad” may not be for you. But if you don’t mind their taking some steps off the traditional path, this is an intriguing and fun variation on some very familiar themes.

“MONEY MONSTER”Well-known to be good friends, George Clooney and Julia Roberts reunite from the “Ocean’s” crime capers in this tense, tightly told (in real time) melodrama directed by Jodie Foster. Clooney plays a television financial guru – think Jim Cramer – whose advice ends up costing an investor (Jack O’Connell, “Unbroken”) big-time, prompting the vengeful man to take the celebrity hostage while on the air. The program’s producer (Roberts) tries to figure out a way to defuse the situation before a widely watched tragedy results. Dominic West (“The Affair”), Caltriona Balfe (“Outlander”) and Giancarlo Esposito also are in the cast, but the tale largely boils down to a two-man show between Clooney and O’Connell, and their teamwork pays off. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; music video. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
