“A Basic for Living”
The Prologue to the book of Proverbs (1:1-19) states that its purpose is to present some basics for living life that we best not ignore. No matter how much we may think we may know about living life and what our capabilities are to be successful, it is all a chasing after the wind, as the writer of Ecclesiastes states it, if the Lord is not at the center of our quest. The writer of Proverbs closes out his prologue with this gem for living,
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
The Hebrew implication of the word fear is ‘awe’ and the word translated ‘fools’ here and elsewhere in the Old Testament is that the person that leaves God out is ‘morally deficient.’ Choose God and be sufficient. Leave God out and be deficient where it really counts, for eternity.
The primary basic of life for us since the coming of the Lord to us in Jesus Christ is to put Jesus first in our lives. That begins with asking Jesus Christ to come into our heart and be our Lord and Savior. It is letting Jesus Christ be the Lord of our life. That means that he is involved in our family, our work, our play, and our community involvement. It is letting Jesus be seen in us wherever we are and in whatever we are doing.
We don’t want to play the part of the fool. As the Psalmist said in the Psalm 14:1 and again in 53:1,
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
The fool becomes his own god. His life centers on himself and not around Jesus Christ. The fool is an egocentric person. The follower of Jesus Christ is called to center life around Christ, to be Christo-centric.
An interesting thing about some fools is that they are very intelligent. They can even be very successful in business. They can be very rich. But, if they don’t have the love of God in Jesus Christ in their hearts they are nothing. What we pick up on in the New Testament is that we are to have an awe of God because of his love for us. We find it in John 3:16-18,
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the
world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
God’s love and responding to it is the “Basic for Living” we need to focus upon. The Apostle Paul focused upon it in the 13th Chapter of 1st Corinthians.
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing…Love is patient…Love is kind.
This love is God’s love that comes to us through our faith and trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. It is the love that comes from letting Jesus Christ be the basic of all our living. This is a “Basic for Living” we don’t want to miss out on. It makes life worth living.
God bless! Love! Fred

When a strange Englishman arrives in the Sweet Seasons Bakery Café claiming to be the long-lost brother of Rachel and her twin Rhoda, Rachel feels the sturdy foundation of her future crumbling -- including Micah’s steadfast love.”
HEARSE AND BUGGY by Laura Bradford An Amish Mystery Series: Book 1
“Claire Weatherly has fled a high-stress lifestyle for a slower pace—in Amish country: Heavenly, Pennsylvania. She only planned a short visit but instead found herself opening an Amish specialty shop, Heavenly Treasures, and settling in. Claire loves her new home, and she’s slowly making friends among the locals, including Esther, a young Amish woman who works in the shop. So when the store’s former owner, the unlikable Walter Snow, is murdered, and the man Esther is sweet on becomes a suspect, Claire can’t help but get involved. Newly returned Detective Jakob Fisher, who left Heavenly—and his Amish upbringing—as a teenager, is on the case. But his investigation is stalled by the fact that none of his former community will speak with him. Claire’s connections make her the perfect go-between. As Claire investigates, she uncovers more than she wanted to know about her neighbors. And suddenly, everything she had hoped to find in this peaceful refuge is at risk . . .” Faye Brackett, Librarian

MISSION MINUTE
AUGUST-2015
World Mission
Hunter Farrell, Director Presbyterian World Mission brings God's global family together to heal the wounds of
poverty and violence and proclaim God's saving love in Jesus Christ.
The year 2012 marked the 175thanniversary of international mission by the General
Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. Over the years, Presbyterian missionaries have
planted churches, built hospitals, and started schools on every continent. The seeds sown by
those missionaries have, in many places, developed into self-sustaining churches and
institutions now led by local Christians. In fact, more than 94 million Christians around the
world now belong to churches that were founded or co-founded by Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A) mission workers.
Today, nearly 200 mission co-workers in approximately 50 countries are engaged in equally
vital ministries of sharing faith and working against poverty and violence.
Presbyterian World Mission helps Presbyterians offer a witness to Jesus Christ in today’s
world by sending mission personnel to face the challenges of evangelizing and continuing
the historic emphases of the Church.
In collaboration with U.S. Presbyterians and global partners, World Mission inspires, equips
and connects communities of mission practice to engage in God’s mission: to proclaim the
good news of Jesus Christ, help the most vulnerable—women and children—and promote
reconciliation amidst cultures of violence.
We invite you to step into the circle of global discipleship with World Mission. Support your mission co-workers As church wide funding changes, direct financial support from individuals (over and above
their congregational giving), combined with Basic Mission Support from congregations, is
vital to enable dedicated Presbyterian mission personnel share the love of Jesus Christ in
approximately 50 countries. World Mission will send as many mission workers as the church
will support. Your financial gift blesses our sisters and brothers in countries all across the
globe by expanding World Mission’s capacity to respond to urgent requests for mission
personnel.
Thank you!

BULL SHOALS FOOD PANTRY – NEWSLETTER
(By the Community, for the Community)
What crazy weather we are having this summer; but flowers are flourishing and gardens producing in abundance.
Rosemarie Ward did such a wonderful job with our 4th of July Jubilee, the children had so many things they could
do, and everyone was enjoying the music, visiting vendors, eating “Taco in a Bag”, and the day ended with a
parade that Bull Shoals put together. Also, a big Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the day a great
success including the Methodist Church Women’s Group who had some wonderful baked goods to sell.
We will be serving “Taco in a Bag” again when we hold our yard sale at the Pantry during the Yards of Yard Sales
September 11 and 12th. The Pantry is accepting household goods, decorative items, cd’s and dvd’s to sell during
this event (but no clothes please). If you have something you wish to contribute, or have any questions about what
we will accept, please call Peni at the number listed below, or bring your items to the Pantry during operating hours.
The Bull Shoals Food Pantry was formed in 1985 as an organization of the Bull Shoals Ministerial Alliance, with
pastors from each of the churches being part of the board along with representatives from each congregation and a
member “at large” from the community. From humble beginnings and working out of part of the Methodist Church
office building, we have grown and with many generous donations built our own building in 2011. We also received
our 501(c)3 designation from the IRS in March of 2011. From averaging 30 families a month a few years ago, now
most months we serve over 200 families, and the Christmas Basket sign up was for 280 families in 2014. With the
growth of families in need, so is the need for donations growing, and that is why the Pantry holds two fund raisers
each year, and this year we are adding the “yard sales” to help supplement our funds so that we can continue to
serve our community and purchase enough food to fill our shelves each month. Remember, because we are a 501
(c)3 in good standing, all donations are tax deductible.
The Pantry has set up an area where people can take a book to read, and bring a book back to share with others.
It is a great way to exchange books, and our clients are enjoying checking it out each month to see what is new.

Our “Ice Cream Social” fundraiser was a huge success! This year, 326 pre-sale tickets were sold and another 225 tickets were sold at the door. Our sales plus donations brought our

I also want to thank all who baked and donated cakes. We can’t forget “Sunfest Market” as they donated 3 gallons of

And last, but really important are all who bought as well as
sold tickets and to those who made monetary donations.
Thank you, Betty Aaron Chairperson
