WW1 and New Zealand’s involvement in it had many impacts such as social,
cultural, environmental and economic. In this project I am making
an attempt to take a closer look at them.
What impact did WW1 have on NZ’s economy?
POSITIVE
• In exchange for NZ’s help the British kept NZ economy going. NZ prospered by exporting agricultural produce to the British market.
NEGATIVE• The war resulted in the rising cost of
living.
What effects did the great war have on society?
POSITIVE• There was a general feeling of excitement about
New Zealand joining in.• With the men at war the women got a chance to fill
in the jobs that were traditionally done by the men.• The war brought people together and the country
emerged with a sense of national identity.
NEGATIVE• Very young and inexperienced boys had to go into
the army which meant they were in a lot of danger in being wounded or killed due to their inexperience.
• Men who came back from the war suffered physiologically and couldn’t come back to normal family and working life.
What were the cultural influences of WW1?
POSITIVE
• Pakeha and Maoris fighting alongside each other brought them together which meant a much stronger and united nation.
• Pakeha and Maori women worked alongside to fill in the male jobs. Doing this cemented their bond.
• Maori women were trained to work which meant greater independence for them.
How did the war change the environment?
The military installations such as North Head in Devonport with a tunnel complex, gun emplacements and fortifications have altered the landscape.
THE CONCLUSION
After researching the topic I realised that New Zealand involvement in WW1 was a double-edged sword for the country as it had both positive and negative impacts on it.
