A GLIMPSE AT THE EXCITING WORLD OF LEARNING AT TAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Ka nui te mihi ki a koutou

As Acting Principal of Tamatea High School I am constantly impressed by our school community. Our mufti day to support Deane Peters and his whanau raised $700.00. This was an outstanding effort and Deane’s whanau have asked me to pass on their gratitude and love. Deane is in Auckland with his mother Kahui and she tells me he is improving every day.

Term One was a busy term where our young people have led the way and challenged themselves, and staff and community members have supported and celebrated successes.

At the end of Tem One we farewelled our Principal, Nicola Ngarewa. It was a sad and emotional farewell assembly. It was great to see so many supporters of our wider school community join with our students, whanau and staff to farewell Nicola and wish her well on her next adventure.

I would like to thank the students who represented us at the Taradale RSA ANZAC service last Saturday. I would also like to thank Kevin Murphy from Sport Hawke’s Bay for providing our school with pre-loved boots and sports shoes which they received from the wider Napier community.

Lastly I can report that our Board of Trustees have had a number of meetings in recent weeks in preparation for advertising to find our next Principal. This position is now advertised throughout New Zealand. I will keep you informed of the progress.

Four of our senior Kapa Haka students (Mariah Wainohu, Te-

given the opportunity of training with Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o

Ngāti Kahungunu secondary school group for the Secondary

Schools’ Kapa Haka Competitions. They trained hard, spending

a week of the holidays and lots of weekends at Te Kura

Kaupapa. Mariah, Te-Rina and Tihema were all chosen for the

final competition with Breeze as a reserve. Their hard work paid

off when Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngāti Kahungunu ki

Heretaunga, Ruataniwha (Central Hawke’s Bay) and Te Rau

Aroha (Tamatea) placed first

ANZAC — 100 years on

We Will Remember Them

We had a very memorable ANZAC assembly on Wednesday 22 April. Several students read poems from World War 1 soldiers and Mrs Cindy Morgan took us through the significance of a display at the Tower of London she had seen last year. It was called “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red” and it was a display to install a ceramic poppy for every soldier killed in World War 1. 888,246 ceramic red poppies were installed around the tower, each poppy represented one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. (New Zealand was one of the United Kingdom’s colonies). 18,000 poppies represent New Zealanders who died fighting in World War One.

Mrs Morgan purchased a poppy at the end of the display and presented it to Tamatea High School as a taonga and as a symbol for ANZAC day. We are proud 100 years on, to have a lasting reminder of the young men and women who died and who we remember on ANZAC day.
