HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

Greeting from your Captain,

I have been trying lately to do more things on the Facebook group to get our crew more involved. So if you

have not joined our Facebook group please come over and look what we are doing. Some of the things on the

Facebook page will give article ideas for the Anvil like the article “While on an Away Mission.” If you liked

this, give me a shout on what you think the crew would do on an away mission.

Congratulations, Shirley Burton, for finding all the Starships and getting 11 of the 12 Robots. That is First

Officer material. You might be saying but there are only 10 pictures, but t two of the pictures have two robots

in them.

I am looking for suggests on what to put in for Captain’s Top Ten and Name the Photo. This month is Top

10 Sci-Fi Movies and Name the Spaceships. I also hope you are enjoying Hunt the Symbol. I might try and find

other symbols to put in other than Star Trek, so, be on the look out.

If you have a review, article, story or some personal achievements you would like to share with your fellow

crewmen please send them to the email below. I want to thank Ensign Donald Arnold for his contribution with

his Star Trek stories. Also, if you have a favorite picture or social pics then send them as well. Thanks to

Phillip Mangina for this month’s pics.

The social was great fun. We watched Star Wars Christmas Special. The re-mastered episodes are so neat. Pop, chips, dip and cookies were also available. Diedra brought Krispy Kremes. Guess she is trying to get her Lt. pips. The Mohney’s also supplied Pizza for a small donation. We played my new Game Firefly Clue which was won by our intrepid Ensign Donald. Afterwards we played Dice Farmer for some good laughs.

The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those

trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which

means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which means you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine

ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Lt. General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.

Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out

what SFMC Academy has for you.

From stone tools to the birth of the Internet, driven by necessity and accident we have shaped our own destiny through invention. These inventions act as historical punctuation points in the story of 101

Inventions That Changed The World, that explores not only the inventions themselves, but also suggests the reasoning behind their development and their subsequent effect on humankind.

Inspired by the featured exhibit, "101 Inventions that Changed the World," the Center has developed a Huntsville component that showcases the creative spirit of the community that sent man to the moon. "101 Rocket City Inventions" includes local patents that track the history of a cotton town turned Rocket City. The exhibition is designed to reflect Huntsville’s robust culture of invention and innovation for products, services and technologies.

March

March 7, 2015 – Cardboard Con, Atlanta, GA http://www.cardboardcon.com

Cardboard*Con is the world's most affordable science fiction / fantasy convention, and the first dedicated to

the art of cardboard costuming. Accidentally founded in 2010 by Captain Drew of the original cardboard

troopers, Cardboard*Con has gone on to attract tens of devoted attendees and such guests as Cardboard Boxxa

Fett(ucinni). Held annually in downtown Atlanta, Cardboard*Con is a family-friendly "traveling" convention

which spans several convention hotels over the course of 5 hours, providing a significant positive economic

and spiritual impact on the city as a whole. Cardboard*Con is more efficient than other science fiction

conventions held in Atlanta, as it eschews the outdated and inefficient "volunteer system" in favor of the

"you're in charge of yourself" system.

March 14-15, 2015 – JoeLanta, Atlanta, GA http://www.joelanta.org/

For more than a decade, JoeLanta has been an annual event bringing toy collectors and pop culture enthusiasts

from across the country together in Atlanta to celebrate the joys of toys and friendship! Not only will you

find vendors selling a variety of vintage and modern toys such as GI Joe, Barbie, Mego, Transformers, Star

Wars, Super Powers, Masters of the Universe, a wide variety of 1:6 scale figures and accessories plus

magazines, comic books & lunch boxes; but you’ll also have an opportunity to meet celebrities, see costumers

and check out a variety of toy dioramas!

Celeste Yarnall’s Battle with Cancer

Celeste Yarnall, who was Martha Landon in the Star Trek Classic episode “The Apple”, has Stage 3 Primary Peritoneal cancer. She was a love interest for Ensign Chekov played by Walter Koenig. She went through 8 hours of surgery last November and is doing Chemo therapy. She is also looking into experimental treatment that will turn her tumor into a vaccine. We hope that she gets well soon. My wife, Brenda, and I met her at a convention in Indianapolis several years ago. At the time she was promoting her book to help take care of cats. She gives a personal article on her battle with cancer at: http://www.startrek.com/article/celeste-yarnalls-cancer-battle-in-her-own-words

Scotty Ready to Transport, Maybe

The Hasso Plattner Institute has devised a CG teleporting system. The have called the device Scotty after our favorite engineer. The device uses a milling machine to take the item apart bit by bit. The information from the milling machine is sent to a 3D printer that then replicates the object. The problem is that the original object is destroyed by this process so that all the nooks and cranny’s can be discovered in the original object. I know that you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet but we are not yet up to the Enterprise model. For now I will travel by car, plane or spaceship.

Trivia for fans of Morn

The Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode “Who Mourns for Morn” celebrated its 17th anniversary on Feb. 4th. I always liked the Morn character. He was named after the Norm character in the Television series Cheers. Morn was played by Mark Allen Shepherd. In the episode Mr. Shepherd is seen with out Morn make up as a Bajorn who is in Morn’s chair to keep it warm till he returns. Also the picture of Morn was created by Mr. Shepherd as was other art pieces that were used in DS9. So let us raise a glass to the 17th anniversary of Who

Mourns for Morn and to Morn himself. (www.startrek.com).

Scotty to write Star Trek 3

Scotty is not actually writing it but Simon Pegg who has played Scotty in the last two Star Trek movies is going to write the new installment that is to come out July 8th, 2016. Simon has written other movies such as Shaun of

the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End. It will be interesting to see what he does with the new setting. Justin Lin, who is known for the Fast and the Furious 3-6 and the Television show Community will be directing the movie. (www.trektoday.com)

Region 2Summit

The Region 2 Summit is going to be at the LaPlaya Resort in Daytona Beach, Fl on March 27 – 29, 2015. The Summit is a place to get together with other ships in Region 2 to have fun and learn what other chapters are doing in their meetings. This would also be a good time to meet the new Region Coordinator. Tickets are $35 per person and hotel rooms are $84 plus tax per night. So plan now to attend.

Star Trek: The New Adventures: The Man Behind the Monster

By: Donald Arnold

Bill entered the interrogation room alone. The others

waited in the lobby. Cuffed to the table, Jeremiah sat

staring into his lap. Although his long dark hair wasn’t

over his shoulders, his pale skin made him seem like a

secluded hermit.

Bill looked at him, “Lieutenant Commander Jeremiah

Livingston, Awarded two Starfleet Science Medals and

countless strategic commendations. You’re brilliant.

That’s why you were sent here, right? You knew the UFP

President was crooked, but, you couldn’t stop him. He did

something to your brain and sent you here, right?”

Jeremiah looked up. He hissed, “I refuse to talk to a

Starfleet worm! Especially you, Mr. Kirk.” Bill tried to

keep his cool.

Jeremiah went on, “You think you’re special, the staff,

the chair, the woman, and the crew. You’re wrong. The

UFP President will find you and you will die. So will your

crew…” Bill lost it there. He seemed to shout, “You

meek, pathetic fool! I could use my powers to kill you

here and now if I had no pity on you.” He reared his fist

and hit Jeremiah in the face. “If you ever threaten my

crew or Stephanie again, I will make sure you die or rot in

a cell until you do!” He hit him again.

Stephanie and Bill had only been married two months

but Jeremiah had been reading things in public records.

He barked, “You are a wanted man! A criminal! The UFP

President will see you die!” Bill blasted the cuffs and

yanked Jeremiah off the ground. Bill slammed him against

the wall and punched him in the jaw. He said, “Listen to

me! I am going to fix your mind and you’re going to help

me or I will send you to Qo’nos and tell them you’ve been

insulting Klingons. They’ll like you there for that. Then,

I’ll find the corrupt President of the UFP and put him in

cuffs for all of this.” He began speaking ancient Vulcan

and Jeremiah seemed to be losing something, as if losing a

burden.

Bill asked, “Will you tell me what happened?” Jeremiah

nodded. He said, “I was one of the most well-known UFP

scientists. I was taking papers to the President. He had

files that he was shredding. He said I saw too much. He

hit me over the head. I didn’t remember what happened

when I woke up. He said he wanted me to search Planet

Justice for something that would get me another award.

He didn’t specify what. He just said find something and I

got here and tried to. Something happened, though. I

found the gems and the mine but then several officers

showed up from Starfleet and did something to the gems.

They gave them back to me but something weird had

happened. The gems were black. I was given a ring, a

staff, and they even made me a cloak and a medallion but

when I put all of it on, I changed and I got angry and hated

the planet and wanted to destroy it. They had put mind

control devices in the gems or something. Ferengi tech, I

believe, and this is the first clear thinking I’ve been able to

do. How did you help?”

Bill answered, “I’ll explain that later. Right now, we

have to get back to the ship. We’re trying to solve the

mysteries of some files we saved.” Jeremiah questioned,

“Where are we going?” Bill looked half intrigued and

responded, “Boreth.”

***********

The President of the UFP was sure Bill was crippled.

He would find the crew and the ship and end this. He

decided to make things worse. Gul Nayar, the new

Cardassian leader was his first call. After that, he had to

get in touch with what remained of the Old Dominion. He

was going to create a full scale war on Starfleet from the

inside. After all, he did promise the Borg every ship in the

fleet. He looked in the mirror in his office and suddenly an

eyepiece materialized as if technology kept it hidden from

view. He smiled evilly and, before he walked away, spoke

the words, “Resistance is futile…”

TO BE CONTINUED…

Reviews The Hobbit :The Desolation of Smaug by: Ensign Donald Arnold

(Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article)

I must say this…was…amazing. Acting, direction, special effects, and all else

made this a wonderful film. This review comes with the focus that the 15th of

this month is the premiere of The Battle of Five Armies. I loved so many things

about this movie but I especially loved the line by Thrandui: “I freed his

wretched head from his miserable shoulders.” Lee Pace made a great Elven

King. Just as well, Tauriel, Legolas, and Fili’s love triangle begins and blossoms

as well as Thorin Oakenshield and Company, minus Gandalf, arrive at Erebor.

Meanwhile, the good wizard and Radagast finally reach Dol Guldur and find nine

strange opened tombs…. (Where would nine tombs come in? I swear I’ve heard

something like that before!) They also find someone or something that comes

into play much later…. 61 years later in Middle Earth time. Nonetheless, it was a

great film and, luckily, filled the gaps I felt that Mr. Tolkien left opened. I think it

was interesting knowing where Gandalf went as they entered Mirkwood. All in

all a great film. Check it and An Unexpected Journey out before going to see

Battle of the Five Armies coming to theaters December 15, 2014.

Rating: AAAAA

The Hobbit :Battle of the Five Armies by: Ensign Donald Arnold

(Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article)

This was truly the greatest Tolkien-story in film in my opinion. Be aware,

there are spoilers ahead. The final chapter has come in the tale of Bilbo Baggins

and the Company of Thorin Oakenshield as well as Gandalf inside the Dungeons

of Dol Guldur. Thorin Oakenshield, Fili, and Kili saw a heroic end but the tale is

far from over. After the death of the great Dragon, Smaug, the war for the

Lonely Mountain begins brewing. Refugees from a ruined Laketown look for

shelter, Thranduil is looking for the white gems, and Dain Ironfoot is only there

because Thorin sent word for him. And Azog… well we all know Azog dies

anyway so he’s kind of irrelevant. However, we saw the return of two great

heroes on the backs of the Eagles: Radagast the Brown and Beorn the

Skinchanger. All in all it was a great film that ended with a great connection to

Lord of the Rings…

Rating: AAAAA

While on an Away Mission

While on an away mission the crew of the Hephaestus found an animal that looked like a cross between cat and a dog. Admiral Danny Potts classified it as a 'Caline' (cross between 'Canine' and 'Feline') and crewman Matt Boyd adopted it and is calling it Mr. Spittles Cuddleton, III. Mr. Boyd is still not sure if it needs to be walked or if it can be trained to use a litter box.

Beware: You don’t own a Caline, a Caline owns you!
