The Shevchenko Foundation is the one truly Ukrainian Canadian community foundation that serves Canada. Through its wide-ranging objectives, no one in the Ukrainian Canadian community is left untouched by its unfaltering contribution to the cultural evolution of the Ukrainian Canadian community.

The Foundation’s most visible contribution is to the many projects it funds. In the past year the Foundation allocated over $330,000 to individuals and organizations for 60 projects in the fields of Arts, Education, Heritage, and Community Development. In turn, the materialization of these projects has touched hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian Canadians and Canadians.

The support of the Shevchenko Foundation resonated most deeply in three inspiring and imaginative projects, which made their world debuts in the Spring of 2016, and have now entered the canon of Canadian musical composition and choreography. The Golden Harvest Oratorio, commissioned by Laurence Ewashko, and composed by Larysa Kuzmenko with libretto by Talia Zajac, made its world debut by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and is poised to be performed throughout Canada in 2017. A magnificent Ukrainian Canadian liturgical work, the Resurrectional Divine Liturgy by Fr. John Sembrat, OSBM was recorded and then premiered in live performances in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Drawing on inspiration from the timeless words of Ukraine’s beloved poet Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers of Edmonton premiered a new folk ballet, Kobzar. In supporting these made-in-Canada innovative works, the Shevchenko Foundation has truly advanced Ukrainian arts for the enrichment of all Canada.

Last year the Shevchenko Foundation introduced its ambitious $20 million capital campaign, Our Legacy Our Tomorrow, to invigorate the Foundation as Canada’s foremost funding body in support of Ukrainian Canadian cultural, heritage and community development. At the official launch in September 2015 we announced that the campaign had pledges that reached the first $10 million of its goal. At the end of this fiscal year, I am proud to say that we have reached $12.2 million in pledges.

We measure the continuing success of the campaign not only monetarily, but also in the growing number of individuals who are adopting our vision for a lasting and vibrant Ukrainian cultural community in Canada. I extend the gratitude of the Shevchenko Foundation to those donors, to the many volunteers who are assisting us in the campaign, and the members of the Campaign Leadership Team, for their significant commitment of time and enthusiastic energy to make the Our Legacy Our Tomorrow campaign succeed.

I believe that the work and successes of the Shevchenko Foundation must be shared with more people. To that end we are re-designing our website to make it responsive on all mobile devices, and to become a portal to the Ukrainian Canadian community we serve. With the touch of a finger on any cellphone, tablet or desktop computer everyone will be immediately connected to the Shevchenko Foundation to learn of the community’s successes, fill out a grant application, or make a donation.

In July, 2015 we welcomed two new members to our Board of Directors – Scott Armstrong (Winnipeg) and Lidia Narozniak (Hamilton) who invigorate our work with their community experience and expertise. I offer my heartfelt thanks to Bohdan Halkewycz and Ernest Paluck, whose service to our Board and the Shevchenko Foundation was exemplary.

Our Board and staff are committed to a vibrant and permanent Ukrainian presence in the cultural life of Canada. We invite you to join us in our promise to future generations to grow an ever-expansive and more transformative permanent endowment fund.

May God bless you all!

Over the past 10 years, the Shevchenko Foundation has paid out grants totalling $6.4 Million. The Foundation has matured as

a national Charitable foundation

and, as a knowledgeable,

trusted investor, manages the

largest portfolio of its kind in

Canada solely for the purpose

of enhancing philanthropic,

educational, recreational and

cultural purposes to Ukrainian

groups, organizations and

communities across Canada.

In the past fiscal year the Shevchenko Foundation portfolio has been challenged by market shifts and uncertainty in the investment world.

Canada’s S&P/TSX was one of the worst major stock markets in the world in 2015, and its surge this year has positioned it as the best. Currency movements have exaggerated this shift as the Canadian dollar regained a bit of the ground it lost in 2015. It's unlikely that Canada's recent outperformance will be sustained.

Investors around the world are trying to come to terms with the consequence of negative interest rates in many countries.

Uncertainty is a constant in the investment world. Today it seems a bit more acute than normal because there is so much attention on transformative issues: Brexit, the US presidential race, and investment conditions that have not previously existed in any current investor's experience.

Today it is more important than ever to block out the noise and focus on fundamentals.

We will endeavor to have our three portfolio managers continue to keep their eyes on the long run and focus on investing in businesses that are wealth

creating, are run by professional people, and can be purchased at an attractive price. By continuing to follow this approach, we believe they can provide the Foundation with attractive long-term returns at an appropriate level of risk.

Part of this Report is based on information provided by our Portfolio Managers.

“ KOBZAR's journey to the stage has been a long but wonderful process, one filled with reflection, insight, and challenge. It represents the creative efforts of many inspired artists, all fueled by the same sincere desire: to empower the voice of Ukrainian dance, a voice that I believe can effectively speak to the ever changing dynamic of our culture.

Inspired by the monumental legacy and vast influence of Taras Shevchenko's work, my personal goal focused on how Shumka might honour the poet's gift and possibly extend his voice through the movement, visuals, and music of a dance theatre production.

In the many years that Shumka has showcased the theatrical characters of Ukrainian dance, dance theatre has been our medium. It has allowed us to portray the time honoured touchstones of our past within the context of mainstream folkloric expression. For Shumka, our mystical Ukrainian bard, our Kobzar, stands as one of the most powerful symbols of that expression. The Kobzari through their songs became the guardians of Ukrainian history, of the stories woven together to reflect the soul of the people.

With the support of the Shevchenko Foundation, we were able to celebrate their song.

“The Shevchenko Foundation-sponsored production and premiere of my Terry Sawchuk documentary, "Made in Winnipeg: The Terry Sawchuk Origin Story" took place on September 26th, 2016 in Winnipeg. The film and event were resounding successes. The concept was to premiere the film, dedicated to one of hockey's greatest goalies, on the ice surface of the arena that bears his name in Winnipeg. The arena was literally packed to the rafters, with over eight hundred in attendance, and, in addition to the half-hour film projected onto a 30' wide screen, there were special performances of music from the film and an opportunity to meet special guests (and film subjects) Jerry and Terrance Sawchuk (Terry's sons) - who attended from Detroit.

The night was a personal career highlight and a once-in-a-lifetime event for the Ukrainian community and hockey fans. The film will soon be available worldwide via the Detroit Red Wings website and museum.

The Shevchenko Foundation was the primary sponsor of the film and the premiere, for which I am eternally grateful.

“ Growing up, I did not have the privilege of attending the Ukrainian immersion program in Saskatoon. Because of this, I have worked profusely on my language

proficiency since I was 14. Now that I finally obtained credits for these advanced Ukrainian classes, I have received official recognition as a Ukrainian speaker.

One of the most remarkable experiences of this trip occurred when we met volunteers for battalions who assisted, and are still assisting, in the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. They were incredibly grateful for all of the support Canada has provided recently. Moreover, the conflict in Ukraine suddenly felt so much more real. The volunteers eagerly answered all of our questions and all of us Canadians became so much more grateful of the country we live in.

“Folk Camp was organized by Kosa Kolektiv, the Toronto based folk art collective, and an amazing community of volunteers and supporters. Months of planning went into the camp, with significant contributions by key volunteers in Toronto, but the camp also aimed to attract and include people beyond the community and to welcome diversity, reflective of Canada. While most participants hailed from the Greater Toronto Area, about 10% came from other parts of Ontario, one individual from Nova Scotia, and one from Poland! People of all backgrounds and ages attended the camp – the youngest camper was 2 and the oldest was 75 yrs old! Many families with young children came, and most were new Canadians hailing from Ukraine, Belarus and Poland. Alongside mothers, fathers, and grandparents from Eastern Europe, there were 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation Ukrainian-Canadians, as well as young folk of all different cultural backgrounds. The mix of ages and cultures didn't stop anyone from connecting though—campers mingled within their assigned clans, and shared chores and stories with fellow clan members. This greatly contributed to the village feeling throughout the week, as did the mealtimes, and circles for sharing gratitude.

Ukrainian Shumka Dancers, Kobzar Ukrainian Shumka Dancers, Kobzar, Orphan bridge

CD cover of the Resurrectional Divine Liturgy of Fr. John Sembrat, OSBM

Three World PremieresThe spring of 2016 can be considered one of the most inspired and imaginative in the world of Ukrainian Canadian cultural endeavor. Not one, but three uniquely different artistic works premiered across the country, all of them made possible through grants from Shevchenko Foundation. In supporting the creation and performance of these new works the Shevchenko Foundation has truly advanced Ukrainian arts for the enrichment of Canada.

Inspired by the words of Ukraine’s beloved poet Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers of Edmonton produced an ambitious folk ballet, Kobzar, which premiered on April 9, 2016 at Edmonton’s Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

With its 47-member cast, newly-commissioned music by Y. Shevchenko, and choreography by V. Lytvynov, the production of Kobzar pays tribute to the monumental legacy and timeless influence of T. Shevchenko, with the uplifting allegorical tale of a people overcoming dark forces with courage and hope to fulfill their destiny.

“ Kobzar’s journey to the stage has been a long but wonderful process, one filled with reflection, insight, and challenge. It represents the creative efforts of many inspired artists, all fueled by the same sincere desire – to empower the voice of Ukrainian dance, a voice that I believe can effectively speak to the ever changing dynamic of our culture” (John Pichlyk, Creative Director of Edmonton’s Ukrainian Shumka Dancers).

In June, 2015 an ensemble of 50 singers, representing 10 choirs from 3 countries (Canada, USA, and Ukraine) came together in Edmonton under the artistic directorship of Michael Zaugg, Principal Conductor with Pro Coro Canada, to record a new Resurrectional Divine Liturgy, composed by Fr. John Sembrat, OSBM of Vegreville, AB.

The importance of this magnificent new work in the Ukrainian sacred music repertoire most certainly lies in its relation to spiritual devotion, the Ukrainian religious musical tradition, and also in its singularity as a liturgical work composed outside Ukraine. It has been hailed as “..holding a leading place in church music performance, will receive well-deserved accolades from the scholarly musical milieu, and will give pleasure to singers and listeners alike” (Prof. M. Yurchenko, Kyiv).

Upon completion of the recording, in late March, 2016 the choral ensemble toured Regina, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Edmonton, with performances of Fr. Sembrat’s Resurrectional Divine Liturgy and other Sacred Music.

On March 18, 2016 the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra debuted the Golden Harvest/Золотіжнива/La moisson dorée Oratorio. Composed by respected Toronto composer Larysa Kuzmenko, with libretto by Talia Zajac, the trilingual Oratorio was performed to a full house by soloists Andriana Chuchman and Michael Nyby, with the Mennonite Festival Chorus and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Alexander Mickelthwaite.

The Golden Harvest Oratorio was commissioned by Laurence Ewashko in honour of the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. It chronicles the journey of one family, symbolic of all Ukrainian pioneers, who made the difficult decision to leave behind all that was familiar and dear in order to build a new life in Canada. Their hardships and achievements reflect the universal experience of all immigrants coming to Canada: their journey, their struggle, and finally their settlement in their new land. The work culminated in a celebration of the golden harvest Ukrainians brought to Canada – a harvest of precious wheat and uncountable cultural wealth.

The Golden Harvest Oratorio has confidently entered the lexicon of Canadian music, with announced performances by Canadian orchestras and ensembles across the country in 2017.

Shevchenko Monument RepairCanada’s most prominent monument to Taras Shevchenko sits on the beautiful grounds of the Manitoba Legislature. It took a nation-wide fundraising effort by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress to make it happen, and nearly 10,000 people from across Canada arrived in Winnipeg to witness its unveiling on July 9, 1961.

The monument is a meeting place. Under Shevchenko’s watchful eye we make our voices heard at rallies and marches, commemorations and demonstrations. Under his gaze we mark life’s moments and bring people from around the world to pay homage to Ukraine’s greatest poet.

As we have honoured Taras Shevchenko by raising funds together to build this monument five decades ago, so once again we put our efforts together to raise funds to help in its renovation. Donors from across Canada heeded our call through the summer of 2015. By the end of the fiscal year, over $26,000 ($26,719) was generously contributed to help with the specialized repairs.

The repair work took place in July, 2016 undertaken by Winnipeg’s leading stone craftsmen, Brunet Monuments.

We can proudly state, that the renewed Winnipeg monument to Taras Shevchenko will continue to be, well into the future, the national gathering-place and strong symbol of what we, as Ukrainians, have achieved in Canada.

SASKATCHEWAN FRIENDS OF THE SHEVCHENKO FOUNDATION

On May 28th, 2015, Saskatchewan Friends of the Shevchenko Foundation (SFSF)—Saskatoon Chapter (SC) sponsored their 18th annual Fundraising and Donor Appreciation Event in Saskatoon to benefit the Foundation.

At the venue of the Cathedral of the Holy Family, guests were warmly greeted by Evelyn and Edward Wojcichowsky and accomplished musicians Marko Baran and Stepan Kodak. Returning as MC, Nissa Baran guided the official program by honouring past and present donors, introducing special guests, and presenting spirited entertainers—Dibrova Ukrainian Folk Ensemble, Lastiwka Ukrainian Orthodox Choir & Orchestra, and the Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble. These premiere and internationally renowned entertainers generously volunteer their talents for this event each year and are recipients of Foundation support.

SFSF-SC Committee Chair Sonia Mysak welcomed all in attendance and commended the Committee members for their efforts. Sonia spoke passionately regarding the Shevchenko Foundation and its relevance to the Ukrainian community of Saskatoon. Sonia also welcomed Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C., President of the Foundation (Edmonton), Adrian Boyko, member of the Shevchenko Foundation Board of Directors (Saskatoon), Lesia Szwaluk, Executive Director of the Foundation (Winnipeg), and Bohdana Bashuk, Executive Assistant of the Foundation (Winnipeg).

In his remarks, Shevchenko Foundation President, Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C. spoke of the new and exciting initiatives that are being undertaken by the Shevchenko Foundation and of the events and programmes held throughout the country. Andrew

also spoke warmly of the SFSF-SC Event and how, in its 18th year, it stands as a national example of community spirit coming together for the benefit of the Foundation.

He inducted a new member to the Kobzar Fellowship, which recognizes and honours those who have made provision for the Foundation through a bequest or other deferred gift.

Doreen Howlett of Saskatoon was welcomed as the newest member of the Kobzar Fellowship. Doreen grew up being very active in the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Sadochok, Ukrainian School, Sunday School, Junior, Senior and Provincial CYMK. In her younger years she attended Green Grove Camp in the summers, danced with Rushnychok and sang with Lastiwka Choir. Following graduation from the U of S with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she married Dr. Evan Howlett. Her love of her culture and religion was shared with her husband and three children, Joel, Marnie and Jill.

Doreen continued to be an active member of the Ukrainian community serving on the Vesna Board, the local Shevchenko Foundation Board, the Petro Mohyla Board, the Green Grove Camp Board, the Ukrainian

Women’s Association, the Holy Trinity Cathedral Board and the Ilarion Board, where she is currently serves as President. Giving back to the community, either the Ukrainian Community or the community at large, is very important to Doreen. She has always been very involved with all the organizations her children were members of, and has shared her love of her culture with her children by giving them the same Ukrainian cultural opportunities she enjoyed. By leaving a bequest to the Shevchenko Foundation Doreen hopes that other individuals and organizations will be the recipients of the gift of money, and will continue to embrace their Ukrainian culture for personal growth and share it with the community as a whole. The SFSF-SC is very proud that Doreen has chosen to be our newest Kobzar Fellowship inductee.

Albert and Cecilia Kachkowski spoke very eloquently regarding the Shevchenko Foundation and the fundraising purposes and benefits that arise from the SFSF-SC Event.

The annual SFSF-SC Events have raised more than $120,000 for the capital fund of the Shevchenko Foundation over the years. The 2015 Event raised over $12,200 in income from all sources.

The Shevchenko Foundation warmly thanks the organizers of this annual event, and is grateful to All Saints Orthodox Brotherhood of Sts. Boris & Hlib, Ukrainian Canadian Professional & Business Association (Saskatoon Branch), Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood – Bishop Roborecki Branch #304, Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League – St. George’s Branch, Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League - Sts. The Shevchenko Foundation’s WorkThe Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund was established in May 2008 to ensure that Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914 – 1920 are remembered and that educational and commemorative projects are initiated across Canada. Serving as a legacy of the Fund, the projects attest to this tragic chapter in history, thereby placing it in the mainstream of the Canadian historical narrative.

As the appointed steward of the Fund, the Shevchenko Foundation fulfills two key roles. The first is to manage the Fund under the Contribution Agreement with the Federal Government of Canada and to ensure that the capital of the Fund remain prudently invested, with only the income earned on the permanent capital used to provide grants and cover administrative costs.

The Shevchenko Foundation Board and its Investment Committee are committed to their fiduciary responsibility to supervise the Fund, ensuring that the goals and objectives for which the Fund was established are met and managed.

The second important role of the Shevchenko Foundation is to assure good governance of the Fund, by appointing the Chair, representatives from the affected communities, and an internee descendant to serve on the Endowment Council.

As President of the Shevchenko Foundation, I would like to thank all the members of the Endowment Council for their dedication and hard work, especially Ivan T. Grbešić, Chair of the CFWWIRF, who has spent countless hours providing leadership to the Council.

THE FUNDFollowing several months of negotiations between the Federal Government of Canada and the Ukrainian Canadian community, as represented by the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association (UCCLA), the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko (UCFTS), and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), a $10 million endowment known as the “Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund” (CFWWIRF) was established to commemorate and educate Canadians about Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914 to 1920.

The agreed terms of the endowment were confirmed during a signing ceremony held on May 9, 2008 at the Stanley Barracks in Toronto, Ontario, at which time the Federal Government was represented by Hon. Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism, and the Ukrainian Canadian community was represented by Mr. Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C. (UCFTS), Mr. Paul Grod (UCC), and Dr. Lubomyr Luciuk (UCCLA).

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE FUNDThe CFWWIRF is designated for the support of projects to commemorate and recognize the experiences of ethno-cultural communities affected by the First World War Internment. Only the interest earned on the $10 million is used to fulfill the objective of the Fund.

The Endowment CouncilThe work of the CFWWIRF is overseen by the Endowment Council, which is comprised of seven members and one observer, including: one representative (a) appointed by each of the following three Ukrainian-Canadian organizations UCFTS, UCCLA, and UCC; (b) named or selected from each of three organizations representing ethno-cultural communities (other than the Ukrainian Canadian community) affected by the First World War Internment; and (c) appointed by the UCFTS as Chair of the Endowment Council; in addition to (d) an observer (non-voting position) selected to represent the perspective of internee descendants.

The 2016 Kobzar ™ Literary Award

Page 17: ANUL - Shevchenko Foundation · які побачили світ навесні 2016 року і вже вписали своє ім’я в канони канадської музичної

For the sixth time, Ukrainian and Canadian literati and community leaders gathered to celebrate the 2016 Kobzar™ Literary Award shortlist and recipient of the $25,000 prize. Launched by the Shevchenko Foundation in 2003 and presented biennially, the Kobzar™ Literary Award showcases the highest calibre of narratives with Ukrainian Canadian themes, promotes literary development in Canada and informs readers nationally and internationally.

As in past years, “the sold-out gala event presented its patrons with an atmosphere, decor and dinner reflective of glittering awards evenings and, most significantly, a sophisticated programme of multi-staged crafted presentations, author readings of literary works of the highest calibre, all tied together with music for ambient effect,” wrote John Pidkowych in The New Pathway and Ukrainian Voice.

Attendees welcomed five finalists short-listed for the 2016 Kobzar™ Literary Award: 1) Grant Buday (fiction novel), The Delusionist, Anvil Press, Vancouver, 2014; 2) Orest T. Martynowych (non-fiction historical biography), The Showman and the Ukrainian Cause: Folk Dance, Film, and the Life of Vasile Avramenko, University of Manitoba Press, Winnipeg, 2014; 3) Maurice Mierau (memoir), Detachment: An Adoption Memoir, Freehand Books, Calgary, 2014; 4) Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch (fiction, novel for young reader), Underground Soldier, Scholastic Canada Ltd., Toronto, 2014; and 5) Stacey Zembrzycki (non-fiction), According to Baba: A Collaborative Oral History of Sudbury’s Ukrainian Community, UBC Press, Vancouver, 2014.

Master of Ceremonies actor/ producer Fred Keating led a dynamic award evening program beginning with a tribute to the Kobzar Tradition and co-hosted with Dr. Christine Turkewych, Director of Literary Arts at the Shevchenko Foundation.

Between dinner courses, the 2016 Kobzar finalists were highlighted with their writing career accomplishments. Each finalist read passages from his/her narrative at one of two mid-room podiums. The authors spoke personally about the circumstances and the motivation to write their work and in turn, motivated every listener to pick up the author’s book and read it in its entirety.

Music with a fusion of Ukrainian and jazz genres, was provided by musicians Alexander (Sasha) Boychouk on keyboard and saxophone, Alexei Severinets on guitar and Vinnie Venkov on bass. Gourmet chef Steffan Howard read all the short-listed works for inspiration to create excellently prepared dinner courses with a fusion of traditional Ukrainian and Canadian produce and ingredients.

This year, the Shevchenko Board of Directors agreed that each short-listed finalist receive $1,500.00 . Dr. Turkewych acknowledged key sponsors and commended Mrs. Delores Y. Buka-Huculak for her generous gift to make possible for every family attending the award ceremony to receive a complete set of the 2016 Kobzar short-listed books. The gift of a set of books for each attending family had been a key goal of the organizing committee for many years. The Kobzar shortlisted books must be read and shared by readers and bookclubs everywhere, so that their narratives are popularized into the Canadian consciousness.

The esteemed 2016 adjudication panel of writers’ peers were Karen Connelly, Tomas Dobozy and Shandi Mitchell, the 2012 Kobzar™ Literary

Award winner for her novel Under This Broken Sky (Penguin, 2009). The announcement of the winner was made by adjudicator Karen Connelly and Foundation President Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C. who presented the award to Maurice Mierau for his memoir Detachment: An Adoption Memoir. Based on the author’s own experiences, the narrative concerns “a removed, detached” father of two newly-adopted young boys from Ukraine, explores his own relationship with an “emotionally distant” Mennonite father, born in Ukraine, and addresses the process of “learning to become a father and a son”.

Among special guests present were Honorary Patron Joy Kogawa, C.M.; Antanas Sileika, author and Artistic Director, Humber School for Writers; Joe Kertes, author and past Dean of the School of Creative & Performing Arts, Humber College; John Degen, Executive Director, Writer’s Union of Canada; Geoffrey E. Taylor, Director, International Festival of Authors and Christine Saratsiotis, Associate Director, IFOA at Harbourfront Centre: comedienne Luba Goy, C.M. (2014 winning book Luba, Simply Luba by Diane Flacks and Andrey Tarasiuk) ; Kobzar Writers’ Scholarship recipients Ulana Snihura and Marianne Fedunkiw; film makers Orest Sushko and Halya Kuchmij; Lemon Bucket Orchestra’s Mark Marczyk, musician and founder.

Dr. Christine Turkewych states that appreciation for success can only be complete with recognition of the dedicated work by the Kobzar Award Ceremony Committee with chair, Alla Shklar, and fourteen professional “literati ”: Irene Bilaniuk; Lesia Chudoba; Odarka Chudoba; Sonia Holiad; Irene Hordienko; Dr. Christina Kowalsky; Winn Kuplowsky; Nadia Luciw; Iryna Revutsky; Olesia Romanko; Lesia Stefaniw; Zenia Turkewych-Miner; Olenka Wasley; and Oksana Zakydalsky.

Special gratitude was extended to the Kobzar™ Literary Award’s key sponsors for their generous support: Ihnatowycz Family Foundation; Temerty Family Foundation; Huculak Foundation; Nexus Investment Management Inc.; Mitchell, Bardyn & Zalucky LLP; Buduchnist Foundation; Ukrainian Credit Union Ltd.; as well as numerous individual donors who were recognized in the programme booklet. All proceeds from the biennial award ceremony are directed to the Kobzar Literary Arts Endowment Fund which supports full tuition scholarships at the annual Humber Writers’ Workshop in Toronto during the IFOA.

The $25,000 Kobzar™ Literary Award 2016 Ceremony and Dinner was held on March 2, 2016 at the Palais Royale Ballroom located on Toronto’s Lakeshore Boulevard. The winner is also presented with a miniature cast of a bronze sculpture by the internationally renowned artist Leo Mol.

Our Annual CampaignsOur direct mail campaigns allow us to connect with our donors and to provide a small gift of appreciation to our friends. Your financial donation to the Foundation through these campaigns is vital to our survival and operation.

ANNUAL REPORTThe Annual Report is published and distributed in early fall of each year to keep our donors informed of our activities. Having a visual history of our Foundation, its members and supporters, as well and the many organizations, groups and individuals we support also provides for a lasting legacy to future generations.

CHRISTMAS CARDSDuring the Christmas season, the Shevchenko Foundation mails Christmas cards to each of our donors for their personal use. This gift from the Foundation is our way of expressing appreciation and good will to our supporters. These cards, depicting a Ukrainian Christmas theme, have become an anticipated and welcomed tradition in thousands of homes across Canada.

SHEVCHENKO MONTHEvery March, the Shevchenko Foundation commemorates the work of our namesake, Ukraine’s greatest poet and patriarch - Taras Shevchenko. We do this by distributing over 30,000 bookmarks to children and youth enrolled in Ukrainian language classes, Ukrainian Bilingual schools, Ukrainian dance schools, and youth groups across Canada. Now it its 16th year, this souvenir art reproduction has become a collector’s item for many.

Directed DonationsThe Shevchenko Foundation funds many worthwhile projects in the field of the arts, education, heritage, and community development. Under Foundation policy grant recipients can receive only up to 50% of the total cost of their project from the Shevchenko Foundation. To meet the shortfall in projects costs grant recipients sometimes undertake projects fundraising campaigns. The Shevchenko Foundation is committed to assist grant recipients to facilitate such project fundraising campaigns via our Directed Donations program. Funds received by the Foundation in this manner will be differentiated from the Shevchenko Foundation’s own funds and, hence, will not be accrued to the Capital Fund of the Foundation. In summary, directed donations are defined as donations made to the Shevchenko Foundation of behalf of a Shevchenko Foundation grant recipient by an individual or group for a specific active project that has already received funding support from the Foundation.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Nadia Topolnicki-SchneiderNadia Topolnicki-Schneider was born in Montreal, QC,

where she was raised to love and respect her Ukrainian heritage. She was active in the Ukrainian Catholic Church and various organizations. She treasured the prospects that Canada provided for her parents, and how that opportunity translated into the ability to help families in Ukraine.

In her adult life, she settled in Pompano Beach, FL, where she actively engaged in various charitable organizations –The Disabled American War Veterans and the Children of Chornobyl Fund, was an avid reader of Ukrainian newspapers, and shared her heritage with her family and friends. She was also had great respect for the work of the Shevchenko Foundation.

Nadia Topolnicki-Schneider passed away October 20, 2014 at the age of 82 in Pompano Beach, FL, and left a generous $10,000 gift to the Shevchenko Foundation.

Вічна їй пам’ять.

How Much Should You Give?Give a gift you can be proud of! Your gift will be invested in perpetuity and the annual income earned will be distributed to causes in accordance with the Foundation’s grants policy. Over the long term, your gift will provide much more financial support to these causes than the original value of your gift. A gift to the Shevchenko Foundation keeps on giving.
