INISTRY OF ENERGY AND MINES, through the General Mining Bureau presents the "YEARBOOK OF THEMINING IN PERU 2001", this document includes a monthly survey and Annual Consolidated DeclarationM

presented by different companies of this Sub-Sector, according to law obligations.

This document includes statistics about the main items in mining-metallurgical activity from 1992 to 2001, whichwill establish statistics series and determine usefully projections.

L MINISTERIO DE ENERGIA Y MINAS, a travs de la Direccin General de Minera presenta el ANUARIODE LA MINERIA DEL PERU 2001, documento que contiene informacin elaborada en base a la encuestaE

mensual y Declaracin Anual Consolidada (D.A.C.) presentada por las empresas del Sub-Sector como obligacionesde acuerdo a ley.

El documento contiene estadsticas sobre los principales rubros de la actividad Minero - Metalrgica, abarca elperodo correspondiente a los aos 1992 al 2001, el que permitir establecer series estadsticas y determinartendencias de invalorable utilidad; adems se complementa con informacin miscelnea de utilidad para lasempresas y/o personas naturales que desarrollan actividad minera en nuestro pas.

uring 2001 period the mining sector has continued with one of the most dynamic sector of our economy,nevertheless the cyclical descent of the metal quotations, the foreign investors kept their interests in exploringD

and extending the development of their mining properties, in spite of social-political-financial factor, developed inour country.

The development evolution of the mining sub-sector is supported by the beginning operations of the megaprojectAntamina, which had caused a positive impact, mainly in the copper and zinc production, also the expansion andmodernization plans of big mining as: Minera Barrick Misquichilca (Pierina), BHP Billiton Tintaya S.A., in Cuajonenear Southern Per Copper Corporation Sucursal del Peru, in Minera Yanacococha S.A. (MYSA), and Minsur S.A.(San Rafael), Compania Minera Santa Rosa S.A., Mra. Iscaycruz S.A., among others.

La evolucin del desarrollo del sub - sector minero es sustentada por el inicio de operaciones del megaproyectoAntamina cuyo efecto a causado un impacto positivo en la produccin principalmente de cobre y zincconsolidndola, tambin se ha visto robustecida por los planes de expansin y modernizacin realizados en la granminera; Mra. Barrick Misquichilca (Pierina), BHP Billiton Tintaya S.-A., en Cuajone por Southern Per CopperCorporation Sucursal del Per, en Mra. Yanacococha S.A. (MYSA), y Minsur S.A. (San Rafael), Cia. Mra. Santa RosaS.A., Mra. Iscaycruz S.A. entre otras empresas productoras de la mediana minera.

COBRE / COOPERLa produccin de este mineral alcanzo las722 035 (t. Finas) durante el perodo 2001lo que signific un incremento del 30,35%,respecto al perodo 2000 cuya produccinfue de 553 924 (t. Finas). Este resultado esconsecuencia del inicio de operaciones delmegaproyecto Ca. Mra. Antamina S.A.durante el segundo semestre del 2001,asimismo a la produccin sostenida deSouthern Per Cooper, Corp.Suc. del Per.,as como los planes de inversin realizadosen expansin en la empresa BHP BillitonTintaya S.A. y Soc. Mra. Cerro Verde S.A.A.,como tambin la continuidad de lasoperaciones en la Ca. Mra. Condestable S.A.

During 2001 period, the production of thismineral reached the 722 035 (fine t.) whichmeant an increase of 30,35% respect of2000 period, which production was 553 924(fine t.). As a result of the beginningoperations of Compania Minera AnataminaS.A. megaproject, during the second semesterof 2001; besides the maintained productionof Southern Peru Cooper, Corp. Suc. del Peru,just as the inversion plans of expantionrealiced in the BHP Billiton Tintaya S.A.Company and Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A.,and also the continuity operations ofCompania Minera Constable S.A.

COTIZACION / QUOTATIONS

Durante el ao 2001, la cotizacin de estemetal mantuvo una tendencia decrecientealcanzando un precio promedio de 71,6Ctv.US$/Lb mientras que el precio promediodurante el ao 2000 fue de 82,24 Ctv.US$/Lb, esta variacin representa una tendencianegativa del 12,9 %. En efecto eldebilitamiento de la economa mundial, enparticular de aquellas zonas econmicasaltamente demandantes de cobre, EstadosUnidos, Japn, unido a las dbiles sealesde una pronta reactivacin de susrespectivos sectores industriales, setransformaron en los factores claves queincidieron en las cadas sistemticas delprecio del metal, as como en las continuasacumulaciones de inventarios en lasprincipales bolsas de metales del mundo.

During 2001, the quotation of this metal wasdecreasing and reached and average priceof 71,6 Ctv. US$/Lb, while the average priceduring 2000 period was 82,24 Ctv.US$/Lb,this variation represents a negative tendencyof 12,9 %. Because of the weakness in theeconomical world, particularly in thoseplaces demanding of copper, United States,Japan and the slow reactivation of theirindustries, were transformed in main factorswhich determined the decrease of the metalprice, besides the accumulation ofinventories in the metal exchange worldwide.

EXPORTACIONES / EXPORTS

Durante el ao 2001 se exportaron 686(miles de t. Finas) superando en 29,7 % lasexportaciones realizadas durante el ao 2000que fueron de 529 (miles de t. Finas); estasgeneraron un ingreso de US$ 987 millones,significando un incremento del 6,1 %respecto al ao 2000.

During 2001 was exported 686 (thousandof fine t.) overcoming in 29,7% the 2000exports of 529 (thousand of fine t.), thisgenerated an income of US$ 987 millions,meaning and increment of 6,1 % respect2000 period.

EN EL MUNDO / IN THE WORLD

El Per se ubica en el 5to. lugar en el mundo,manteniendo as una posicin expectante,esperando en un futuro cercano ubicarnosentre los primeros productores, como Chile,Estados Unidos, Indonesia, Australia.

Peru is in the fifth place of copper producerafter Chile, United States, Indonesia andAustralia, but expecting to be situated in thefirst place soon.

ZINC / ZINCLa produccin nacional de zinc mantuvosu tendencia creciente alcanzando unaproduccin de 1 056 629 (t. Finas) duranteel ao 2001 superior en 16,07 % a laproduccin alcanzada durante el ao 2000que fue de 910 303 (t. Finas). Estecrecimiento se debe a la incidencia de laentrada en operacin del megaproyecto Ca.Mra. Antamina S.A., as como la produccinsostenida de Volcan Ca. Mra. S.A.A. hoyprincipal productor de este metal . Asmismo contribuyeron a este crecimientoEmpresa Mra. Iscaycruz S.A., Ca. Mra.Milpo S.A., Ca. Mra. Atacocha S.A., Ca.Mra. Santa Luisa S.A., entre otrasprincipales.

The national production of Zinc increasedin 1 056 629 (fine t.) during 2001, overtakenthe 16,07 % of the 2000 production whichwas 910 303 (fines t.). This increment isdue to the megaproject of Cia MineraAnatamina .S.A, and also Volcan CompaniaMinera S.A.A., the main producer of thismetal right now. Minera Iscaycruz S.A.,Compania Minera Milpo S.A., CompaniaMinera Atacocha S.A., Compania MineraSanta Luisa S.A., among others, alsocontributed with this increase.

COTIZACION / QUOTATION

La cotizacin promedio del zinc tambin secaracteriz por un marcado descensoalcanzando un precio promedio de 40,17Ctvs.US$/Lb durante el ao 2001, preciopromedio inferior en 21,5 % al alcanzadoen el ao 2000 que fue de 51,16 Ctvs.US$/Lb, la cada del precio del zinc fue debido alelevado incremento de los stock, comoconsecuencia de la aceleracin en elincremento de la produccin china de zincrefinado, en un contexto de recesinmundial.

The average quotation of Zinc was 40,17Ctvs.US$/Lb during 2001 period, lower in21,5 % than 2000 perior, that was 51,16Ctvs/US$/Lb. This situation was due to theincrease of stock of refined zinc producedby China in the world recesion context.


Se exportaron 921 miles (t. Finas) de zincen el perodo 2001 cifra superior en 16,3 %a lo exportado en el ao 2000, estasexportaciones generaron un valor de US$419 millones, cifra inferior en -15.5 % a laalcanzada durante el perodo 2000 en quefueron de US$ 496 millones.

In 2001 period, 921 thousand (fine t.) ofzinc were exported superior figure in 16,3 %of 2000 exports, which was US$ 419millions, inferior figure in -15.5 % reachedin 2000 period, that was US$ 496 millions.


En lo que respecta a la produccin mundialmantenemos el cuarto lugar, siendo el mayorproductor China seguido de Australia yCanad.

We got the fourth place. China is the firstZinc producer followed by Australia andCanada.

ORO / GOLDDurante el perodo 2001 la actividad aurferamantuvo su tendencia creciente en susvolmenes de produccin alcanzando los138 022 Kgs. f. lo que representa unaumento en 1,13 % respecto al ao 2000que fue de 132 585 Kgs. f. Este crecimientose explica por la mayor produccin de Mra.Barrick consolidndose como segundoproductor de oro y liderando la produccinMra. Yanacocha S.A. As mismocontribuyen a este aumento Unidad deOrcopampa perteneciente a Cia. De MinasBuenaventura S.A, Consorc. Mro. HorizonteS.A., Aurfera Santa Rosa S.A., AurferaRetamas S.A. Ca. Mra. Ares S.A.C..

During 2001 period this auriferous activitywas growing, reaching 138 022 Kgs.F. whichrepresents an increase of 1,13 %, againstthe 2000 period with 132 585 Kgs.f. Thisincrement is due to Minera Barrick, whichis the second producer of Gold, and has theleadership in the production of MineraYanacocha S.A. Besides the contibution ofOrcopamapa Unit that belongs to Companade Minas Buenaventura S.A., ConsorcioMinero Horizonte S.A., Aurfera Santa RosaS.A., Aurfera Retamas S.A. Ca. Mra. AresS.A.C., among others.


La cotizacin internacional promedio del oroal cierre del 2001 alcanz 271,23 US$/Oz.tr.,en relacin a 279,37 US$/Oz.tr. registradadurante el ao 2000, mantenindosedurante cuatro aos consecutivos pordebajo de los US$/Oz.tr 300 en su cotizacininternacional como consecuencia de lasespeculaciones, a la baja de las tasas deinters internacionales, a la finalizacin delas subastas de reservas de oro por parte delos bancos centrales y a una percepcingeneralizada de inseguridad luego delatentado en Nueva York. como por lasventas de oro realizadas por los bancoscentrales europeos.

The international average of gold in 2001reached 271,23 US$/Oz.tr., in relation to279,37 US$/Oz.tr. in 2000, maintainingduring four consecutive years under US$/Oz.tr 300 in its international quotation. Thishappened due to speculations, theinternational rate of interest, the auction ofgold reserves through central banks., theinsecurity after New York attack, and the sellsof gold through European banks.


El valor de las exportaciones durante el ao2001 fue de US$ 1 166 registrndose unleve incremento del 1,8 % a pesar de losprecios deprimidos que afronta este metalrespecto al valor alcanzado durante el ao2000 que fue de US$ 1 145; los volmenesde exportacin tambin se incrementaron apesar de lo anteriormente sealado; duranteel ao 2001 se exportaron 4 294 miles deOz./tr.. cifra superior en 5,2 % a lo exportadoen el ao 2000 que fu 4 083 miles de Oz./tr.

Exports during 2000 were US$ 1 166,increasing 1,8 %, in spite of the prices ofthis metal, which reached in 2000,US$ 1 145; during 2001 were exported, 4294 thousand of OZ/tr., superior figure in5,2 % of the 2000 exports which was 4 083thousand Oz./tr.


El Per a nivel mundial se encuentra dentrode los siete primeros productoresmundiales, mantenindose en un lugarexpectante, mientras que a nivelLatinoamericano ocupa el primer lugar comoprimer productor aurfero.

Peru is in the seven position of worldproducers but in first place in Latin Americaof gold production.

ESTAO / TINEn el ao 2001 la produccin de estao fuede 38 182 (t. Finas), incrementndose en2,06 % respecto al ao 2000, cuyo nivel deproduccin alcanz los 37 410 (t. finas),este aumento se debi al cumplimiento delprograma de inversin de Minsur, que tienecomo objetivo optimizar las operaciones dela fundicin de Pisco. El incremento en laproduccin de estao durante los prximosaos depender de los planes de expansinoperativa de la empresa y la coyunturainternacional en el precio de este metal.

In 2001 the production of Tin was 38 182(fine t.) increasing in 2,06 % against 2000period of 37 410 (fines t.), this incrementwas due to the accomplish of the inversionprogram of Minsur mining, which had theobjective of improving the smelting house ofPisco. The increment of tin productionduring the following years will depend onthe operating expansion plan of thecompany, and the international price of thismetal.


Durante el ao 2001, la cotizacin promediodel estao, fue de CtvsUS$/Lb 203,4presentando una marcada tendenciadecreciente respecto a su cotizacin deCtvsUS$/Lb 246,57 alcanzada durante el ao2000, actualmente la recuperacin de laactividad en los pases asiticos y el hechode que se este empleando estao comosustituto de algunos insumos consideradostxicos, podra elevar la demanda ysustentar un incremento en el precio.

During 2001 period the tin quotation wasCtvsUS$/Lb 203,4 decreasing respect 2000period, which was CtvsUS$/Lb 246,57,nowadays, the recovering activities in theAsiatic countries and the fact of the use oftin as substitute of toxic supplies, couldincrease the demand and support theincrement of price.


Las exportaciones alcanzaron un valor deUS$ 130 millones; en el 2001 registrandouna cada del 21,7 % respecto al valorexportado en el ao 2000 que fue de US$166 millones de dlares. De igual maneralos volmenes de exportacin se redujeronen 8,6 % respecto al ao 2000 que fueron35 (miles de t. Finas).

Exports got US$130 millions in 2001,decreasing in 21,7% of 2000 exports, whichwas US$ 166 millions dollars. In the sameway the volumes of exports were reduced in8.6% in relation of 2000 period, with 35(thousand of fines t.)


A nivel mundial el Per mantiene el tercerlugar; la produccin la sigue liderandoIndonesia, seguido de China, enLatinoamrica ocupamos el primer lugar,seguido de Brasil.

We got the third place after Indonesia andChina, but in Latin America we are in thefirst position followed by Brasil.

El volumen de produccin alcanzadodurante el ao 2001 fue de 289 546 (t. Finas)observando un aumento en su produccinde 7,01 % respecto a los niveles deproduccin obtenidos durante el ao 2000que fueron de 270 576 (t. Finas). Esteincremento se debe principalmente alaumento en la produccin de empresascomo: Volcan Ca. Mra. S.A.A., Ca. Mra.Atacocha S.A. y Ca. Mra Milpo S.A., entreotras.

In 2001 we got 289 546 (fine t.) growing in7,01 % against 2000 period, which was270 576 (fine t.). This increment was mainlydue to the increase of production in VolcanCompaa Minera S.A.A., CompaaMinera. Atacocha S.A. y Compaa MineraMilpo S.A., among others.


La cotizacin internacional promedio delplomo, durante el ao 2001 fue de 21,6Ctvs.US$/Lb; mientras que en el perodo2000 alcanz un promedio de 20,59Ctvs.US$/Lb experimentando un aumentoen su cotizacin de 4,9 % comoconsecuencia de la demanda y larecuperacin de inventarios.

The Lead average international quotationduring 2001 was 21,6 Ctvs. US$/Lb;meanwhile in 2000 reached an average of20,59 Ctvs. US$/Lb, growing on 4,9 % asconsequence of the demands and recoversof inventories.

PLOMO / LEAD EXPORTACIONES / EXPORTSLas exportaciones de plomo alcanzaron unvalor de 196 (millones de US$) durante el2001, mientras que durante el 2000 estasfueron de 190 (millones de US$) .Asimismo los volmenes exportadosdurante el ao 2001 alcanzaron los 258(miles de t), mientras que en el ao 2000fueron de 249 (miles de t).

Lead exports got 196 (millions de US$)during 2001, while in the year 2000 were190 (millions US$). Besides the exports in2001 reached 258 (thousand of t.) against249 (thousand of t.) of 2000 period.


El Per se mantiene en el cuarto lugar,ocupando el primer lugar Australia, segundolugar China y tercer lugar Estados Unidos.

Peru continues in the fourth place, afterAustralia, China and USA.

La PLATA, alcanz un nivel de produccinde 2 674 (t.finas) durante el perodo 2001,registrando un incremento del 9,68%respecto al ao 2000 que fue de 2 438(t.finas). Este resultado se debe a laexpansin de las unidades de produccinde Mra.Yanacocha S.R.L como a laconsolidacin de Mra. Barrick MisquichilcaS.A. (Pierina) como productor de este metal.Como tambin a la entrada en operacindel megaproyecto de Antamina. As como alas empresas que han contribuido a esteincremento como Volcn Cia. Mra. S.A.A.,Cia. De Minas de Buenaventura S.A., Soc.Mra. Corona S.A. y Ca. Mra. Arcata S.A.entre otros.

In 2001 silver reached 2 674 (fines t.) ofproduction, increasing in 9,68 % in relationto 2000 period which was 2 438 (fines t.).This results is due not only to the expansionof the Production Unit of Minera Yanacocha,but also the consolidations of Minera BarrikMisquichilca S.A. (Pierina as producer ofthis metal. Besides the operations of theAntamina megaproject and other companiesthat helped with this increment as VolcnCompania Minera. S.A.A., Compania deMinas de Buenaventura S.A, Soc. MineraCorona S.A and Compania Minera ArcataS.A., among others.

PLATA / SILVER COTIZACION / QUOTATIONEl precio de este metal argentfero duranteel perodo 2001, alcanz una cotizacininternacional promedio de 4,39 US$/Oz.tr.representando una disminucin de12,2 % respecto al perodo 2000, cuyacotizacin fue de 5,00 US$/Oz.tr. esto esexplicado por el comportamiento dealgunos especuladores que estn actuandoen el mercado aprovechando las posicionescortas en que se encuentran algunosproductores lo que estara elevando loscostos de los prestamos del metal.

The price of this metal in 2001 reached aninternational average of 4,39 US$/Oz.t.r.which represents a decrease of 12,2% inrelation to 2000 period, which quotation was5,00 US$/Oz.tr., this is due to somespeculations that takes advantages of theclosers producers and raising the loans ofthis metal.


Se exportaron durante el ao 2001, 38millones de Onz./tr. estas exportacionesgeneraron un valor de US$ 169 millonesde dlares que representa una disminucindel 5,6 % respecto al perodo 2000 en el quese alcanzo US$ 179 millones de dlares.

During 2001 were exported, 38 millions ofOnz/tr, this exports generated a value ofUS$ 169 millions, which represents 5,6 %in 2000 year which got US$ 179 millions ofdollars.


El Per sigue ocupando el segundo lugar enel mundo, manteniendo Mxico suliderazgo de primer productor.

We are located again in the second placeafter Mexico.

La produccin de Hierro alcanz los 3 087 015 (t. Finas)durante el ao 2001 incrementando su produccin en9,7 % respecto al ao 2000, que alcanzo una produccinde 2 812 785 (t. Situacin positiva por la evolucin favorable del precio delhierro que durante el 2001 alcanzo un promedio de19,4 US$/t superior en 3,2 % al promedio alcanzado en el2000 que fue de 18,8 US$/t.

Es el contenido fino en minerales y concentradossusceptible a ser recuperado por procesos mineralrgicos ometalrgicos subsecuentes. Este contenido es el que sirvede base para la valorizacin de la produccin Minera Metlica.

Tratamiento pirometalrgico (oxidacin - reduccin) enhornos de tipo: reverbero, horno elctrico, alto horno, etc.,aque son sometidos los minerales y concentrados paraeliminar impurezas ligeras y voltiles (azufre). Los productosobtenidos mediante este proceso son:

ORO REFOGADO / OVERHEST GOLD

Es el producto resultante de calentar la amalgama,oro+mercurio; posibilitando la recuperacin del oro libre,al evaporarse el mercurio por accin del calor.

It is the result of warming up amalgam gold-mercury,making possible the recovery of free gold, when evaporatingmercury by action of the heat.

Productos libres de impurezas obtenidas mediante procesoshidrometalrgicos y se obtiene productos como:

Este producto es obtenido por procesohidrometalrgicos con una pureza del 99.9%.

Se obtiene con una pureza variable, las que determinanvarias clasificaciones como: Special High Grade con99.99% de zinc, High Grade con 99.8% de zinc.

It is obtained with a variable purity, which determineseveral classifications as: Special High Grade with99,99% of zinc, High Clay with 99,8% of zinc.

SULFATOS / SULPHATES

Son cristales precipitados en el proceso de lixiviacin ciday son recuperables en cualquier etapa del proceso siendouno de los principales el sulfato de cobre.

They are crystals hasty in the leaching acid process and arerecoverable in any stage of process being one of the maincopper sulphate.
