EC: Europe only dominates the more mature segments in current ICT Industry but the Future Internet will shift to new opportunities and challenges

Europe’s activity is concentrated on telecom services and terminal/network manufacturing

Segment in FT500

Total EU Companies

Telecom services 29 9 Vodafone, Telefonica, DT, Orange among the top 10

Media 13 3 Vivendi (rank 6) and BskyB (rank 10)

Software and computer services

12 1 SAP

Hardware and equipment

19 2 Ericsson (rank 10) andNokia (rank 13)

The balance of economic activity will gradually shift to the end of the value chain: away from

telecommunications towards Internet services, applications and end-user sectors

The EU Future Internet Public-Private Partnership (FI-PPP) is targeted to capture these new opportunities

• The FI-PPP is aimed to place Europe in the best position to capture new opportunities in the Future Internet, derived from digitalization of a wide set of economy sectors

• This requires creating an generic, open and standard platform (FI-WARE) and a dynamic innovation ecosystem around it engaging developers and entrepreneurs eHealth

What is genuine in EU FI-PPP

• Better suited to align with roadmap of product developments by partners: Industry- and Implementation-driven approach Results exploitable in the short-medium term (4-5

years) rather than in the long-term (10-15 years)

• Targeted to attract audience beyond the research community who will be fund to develop applications on top of FI-WARE Developers Entrepreneurs Public Administrations

• Commitment for exploitation required: Commercial offer in the short term; or Delivery of results in open source otherwise
