Anthology of Maps of the Exploration and Discovery in the Heartland of America, 1650-1700 A Journey through the Great Lakes. It was begun in the mid-1500 with Jacques Cartier. He navigating 1000 miles up the St. Laurence. Exploration continued again in the early sixteen hundreds, with the concomitant opening up of the St. Laurence to exploration, trade and settlement. By the early 1670s, Lake Superior had been mapped. The Dollier-Galinee draft of the Great Lakes, done at about the same time, was a first-step workable solution for the great Lakes geography.

(In the summer of 1669, west against the current of the Saint Laurence, two expeditions, with different purposes, joined together. One was lead by LaSalle with fealty to the Crown of France. The other by two Sulpician missionaries, Dollier and Gallinee, with allegiance to the Pope.

1674Ayer48Anonymous The Draft of Map for King Louis Shows LaSalle’s 1669-73 and Jolliet’s 1673 Expeditions
Sent to France in 1674, this map was a draft created in Quebec for the 1675 Ayer 48 Final. It had top secret knowledge of the interior for the King. It documents the voyages of Jolliet and, vaster in scope, those of LaSalle. It was grossly tampered with in the mid-1800s. It has five or six distinct handwritings. As a draft, some of the drafting was done in Canada, some in Paris— most noteworthy, the paragraph at the center top was scribed by Claude Bernou.

Weber: calls it the 1675 Ayer 48 Final. It was the map for the King’s eyes, showing the discoveries of Jolliet and LaSale.
Campeau: calls Ayer 48 “the Lost Map of Jolliet.” He says the map was sent to France and then lost. Delanglez: calls it Jolliet’s Larger map.
Both of these writers overlook 1674 Ayer 48 Anonymous.
