That’s a Good Question How does FGCU support electronic
vending machines on an environmental friendly campus?
ProblemAlthough students can stop for a quick snack between classes at a vending machine, the campus may perform better if students brought snacks from home.
Cont’d It would be more convenient to get rid
of vending machines in the favor of the environment and arising obesity problem in South West Florida.
Cont’d Snacks being brought from home allow
less time and may be a healthier option.
Then Again… Vending machines are convenient for
FGCU campus because it allows a student to satisfy a hunger need right when it calls and allows a student to go back for more.
Cont’d Vending machines are also beneficial
because they allow a variety of choices as well as no line. It is easy to grab and go on the way to class.
Listen Up Vending machine food choices are extremely
unhealthy for a person.
“The junk food provided through many vending machines is linked to such conditions as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.” (Neel 2012)
Cont’d The amount of electricity used to
support vending machines is a large amount. Vending machines are kept on 24/7 on campus.
Cont’d Vending machines may affect the environment
and be a distraction to a student that is trying to learn.
"Schools provide not only an environment for learning but an environment that affects healthful eating and physical activity.” (Preidit 2010)
Cont’d Vending machines may cause long term effects
on unhealthy eating. “…vending machines in the majority of grade
schools in the United States have a negative effect on the eating practices of students.” (Edmondson 2011)
Cont’d Vending machines create easy access to
bad food all the time. With a vending machine in almost every building, it is hard to resist and say no.
Common Ground I believe that in order to achieve a
healthy and green environment, banning vending machines on campus would be most beneficial.
How About This? Vending machines should offer healthy
alternative snacks such as fruits, yogurts, and juices instead of fatty and sugary foods.
Cont’d Vending machines should also be turned
on and off at a certain time frame each day in order to conserve energy.
