    Another Century of Narrow Gauge Steam II Update

    Use of Funds to Date

    As of the end of 2010, $1 million in pledges and contributions had been raised, with a total of$709,639 actually in hand. Of that amount, $439,430 has been expended on the followingprojects:

    Interpretation and Education Informing the public about the rich legacy of the railroad

    Completed a master interpretive plan for the 64-mile living museum

    Completed initial design phase for exhibits in the planned Chama Railroad Visitor Center

    Sponsored two educational programs involving 500 elementary school students from ChamaValley Schools (see supporting letter from school principal)

    Completed informational kiosk at Cumbres Pass, Colorado

    Opened a museum car display for the historic rail yard in Chama, New Mexico

    Initiated an interpretive display for the 1923 steam-powered rotary snow plow

    Historic Rolling Stock Preserving the most unique examples of Denver & Rio Grandeequipment dating back as early as 1880:

    Completed restoration of Caboose0503,an original Denver & Rio Grande rail carnow used for charter service and earningrevenue for the railroad

    Completed restoration of Pile Driver OB,the only existing artifact of its kind

    Completed restoration of the JordanSpreader used in snow removal and right-of-way clearance

    Completed restoration of Office Car 04982 which was used on the line for maintenance-of-way crews

    Restoration of Railway Post Office Car 54 is well underway. When completed, this will bethe only thoroughly restored example of this class of car

    Tourist Sleeper # 252 built in 1880 to transport workers to the West. Restoration has begun,with the initial assessment and master restoration plan completed

    Initiated restoration of derrick OP which was used for clearing train wrecks Initiated restoration of two frameless tank cars used to haul crude oil from Chama to the

    refinery in Alamosa during the oil boom in the 1930s-1950s.

    Continued restoration work on maintenance-of-way Cook Car 053

    Historic Structures Preserving for the future the historic buildings and other structures alongthe line, many of which have weathered a century of harsh winters and hot dry summers:

    Stabilized the 1924 wooden coal tipple which was in grave danger of collapse andrestored the coal loading mechanism. This is the only Fairbanks-Morse wooden coal tipplein existence

    Recreated the coal loading dock andrestored the sheep loading pens and snowfence at Osier, Colorado

    Rebuilt the foundation and roof of the logbunk house, oldest structure in the Chama yard

    Repaired the deteriorating foundation ofthe section house at Sublette

    Recreated the covered walkway, privy andchicken coops attached to the car inspectorshouse at Cumbres Pass

    Completed an assessment survey ofrestoration needed for all of the structures on the line

    Restored sheep pen fences in Chama

    Locomotive Fleet Enhancing the railroads ability to restore its steam locomotive fleet:

    A complete rebuild of Locomotive 463, the oldest locomotive of the fleet, was begun in 2009and completion is expected in early 2012. This is one of only two K-27 locomotives inexistence

    Railroad and Operator AssistanceSupporting the critical needs of the railroad:

    Allocated a major grant to help the railroad rebuild the Lobato Trestle that was destroyed byfire in June 2010

    Supported the railroad in completing the following projects:

    Parlor car upgrade

    Rider gondola upgrades

    Chama water tank repair

    Track side brush removal

    Outdoor safety lights at the Chama shops
