Brunel University London - RAE Annual VP Conference 2018 - Changes to Industry/Education 1
Brunel University London
How are changes in education affecting the VP programme?
1. The design and development of courses require a much wider understanding of the industry needs.
2. VP programmes are now becoming more relevant as a mechanism to strengthen the link between industry with academia
3. In the long run, we should improve the provision of programmes, increase quality and employability for a much wider range of HE graduates in the UK.
Inclusivity – equal opportunity – social mobility

What changes are happening in education/industry that are affecting engineering education?
1. Wider access to HE. Currently ~50% of school leavers apply and join HE institutions Wide variation in academic abilities
2. Tuition fees have put extra pressure on Universities to demonstrate that students get value for money
3. International competition; high tuition fees and visa restrictions are posing major challenges for overseas student recruitment (traditionally a major source of income and prestige)
4. VP’s from industry provide a new perspective to real world challenges – they make the course more relevant and open the eyes of students. Their prior theoretical learning gains context against practical implementation.

How can we use the VP schemeas an agent for change?
1. The VP programmes provide a mixture of theory and practice together that classical university lectures do not.
Wider cohort engagement of students with diverse academic capabilities
2. Value for money: the educational experience is enriched by VPs who bring more realism, engage in practical case studies, enriched assignments…
Giving improved opportunities to graduates with low-income background
3. Inclusion of highly reputable industrialists in course increases the attractiveness of the courses for national and international students
4. The VPs attend internal university quality meetings and students affairs, they provide valuable and interesting insight into how the courses should be designed to increase relevancy to the real problems and needs of the industry.
