News News News News 320 Australian Veterinary Journal Volume 82, No 6, June 2004 I lluminating guest speakers, international veterinary Presidents, pet industry celebrities and furious slot car racing, this year’s Annual AVA Conference in Canberra had it all. Backdropped by one of the most democratic and big issue AGM’s in AVA history, there was plenty of excitement for the 1000 delegates who attended this dynamic veterinary forum. Blessed with perfect Autumn weather, conference delegates seized the opportunity to explore Canberra’s surrounding attractions while soaking up a huge range of progressive veterinary content presented by local and international guest speakers. Following the intensive daily sessions that featured 30 con- current streams, at the National Convention Centre, the 5.00pm-6.00pm Happy Hours were extremely well attended. Delegates swamped the drink stands and TV vet Katrina Warren for signed magazines during the launch of Vetlife and welcomed the birth of the AVA VetED Continuing Education scheme. After each day’s workshops, seminars and lectures many delegates chose to kick on. Local watering hole King O’Malleys Irish pub proved to be a popular haunt where old friends and new aquaintances could enjoy cold beer and warm conversation til midnight. Key events on the conference social calendar kept everyone entertained with some whacky science puzzles, adrenaline charged rides and a finger food feast at Canberra’s Questacon science and technology centre. There were also plenty of reunions, debates, laughs and some big moves cut on a lively dance floor at the formal AVA closing dinner held in the National Convention Centre. While practice owners and old hands swapped tall tales on the Royal Canberra golf course, their younger counterparts shared some macabre and hilarious first hand accounts at the annual New Graduates dinner. Some brave veterinarians even threw themselves to the sharks during a scuba diving field trip to endangered shark breeding grounds. All in all, the AVA 2004 Conference was an unprecedented success and AVA co-ordinator Josie Hatte must be commended for her tireless efforts in bring together such a gigantic production.
