Appointment of New Director, Hong Kong Jockey Club DisasterPreparedness and Response Ins瓳�tute (HKJCDPRI) of the Academy

Ms. Eva Lam has been appointed as the Director of the HKJCDPRI, with effectfrom 1 July 2016. Ms. Lam was previously the Assistant Director, and has beentaking part in the various DPRI projects since April 2015.

 

Annual Subscrip瓳�ons

Demand notes for the 2016 subscrip瓳�ons have been sent to Fellows inDecember 2015. Fellows who have not se��led their subscrip瓳�on before 30June should have received a demand note for subscrip瓳�on and surcharge.Please se��le as soon as possible.

Reminder:

1. All payments must be received by the Academy before 30 September.According to Bylaw 6.4: If a member's fee or any other moneys due by a member to the Academy is notreceived by the Academy within 9 months a隿�er such payment falls due, despitetwo wri��en reminders by the Academy to pay, the member shall automa瓳�callyforfeit his membership.

2. It is Council's policy that late subscrip瓳�ons received by the Academy a隿�er 30June will be subject to a surcharge of 5% on the subscrip瓳�on amount.

CME/CPD Reminder

The current CME/CPD cycle for Academy Fellows will end on 31 December2016. All Fellows who are on the Specialist Register (SR) of the Medical Councilor Dental Council will need to fulfil the requirements of the Academy to remainon the SR. Fellows, except those exempted for CME/CPD due to re瓳�rement, arealso required to fulfil the requirements to maintain the Academy Fellowship.Fellows are reminded to make sure they will obtain the required number ofCME/CPD points before the end of this year, and to catch up if the points theyhave obtained so far falls behind greatly of the requirements.

 

CME/CPD Principles & Guidelines 2017 ‐ 19

Fellows may wish to note that the CMECPD Principles & Guidelines for the nextcycle 2017 ‐ 19 will remain unchanged i.e. no more than 75 points can beawarded for passive par瓳�cipa瓳�on in a 3‐year cycle. Fellows are strongly advisedto maintain a balanced CMECPD profile with a mix of different ac瓳�vi瓳�es, inorder to capture the full benefit of different types of CMECPD ac瓳�vi瓳�es.

(Note: Individual Colleges will have their own set of guidelines based on whathave been agreed at the Academy level. There may be specific rules orrequirements that the Colleges determine to be relevant for their special瓳�es.)

 

List of Fellows who are interested in ac瓳�ng as expert witness

The Academy has been approached from 瓳�me to 瓳�me by the Police and othergovernment departments, Medical Council, Dental Council, as well as legalfirms, for assistance in iden瓳�fying Fellows who could be expert witness. In thisregard, the Academy has invited Fellows who are interested in being expertwitness to submit informa瓳�on to the Secretariat since 2010. A List wascompiled and has been made available to many enquirers upon formal requestsince then. The role of the Academy is co‐ordinator, and Fellows selected toassist in par瓳�cular cases would be contacted directly by the par瓳�es concerned.The Academy will not be involved in any of those cases.

Fellows who wish to have their names added to this List may now completeand return the reply form to the Academy before 31 July 2016. (Note: Those

Ecosystem Roundtable on Design. Ci瓳�es. Health, 16 June 2016

President moderated the roundtable discussion on the topic of "Ci瓳�es andHealth" organised by the Hong Kong Design Centre. Professor Jeremy Myerson,Helen Hamlyn Professor of Design of the Royal College of Art made apresenta瓳�on of a whole picture approach on health, and the importance ofaddressing health and healthcare at the policy‐making level. President sharedhis insights on the theme and facilitated the discussion.

 

38th Asia Pacific Dental Congress (APDC), 17 June 2016

Signatory Organisa瓳�on of the Organ Dona瓳�on Promo瓳�on Charter, 27June 2016

President together with Colleges' Presidents and representa瓳�ves par瓳�cipatedin the ceremony of the signatory organisa瓳�on of Organ Dona瓳�on Promo瓳�onCharter at the Central Government Offices. The Government has been workingto inculcate a culture of organ dona瓳�on in the community, aiming to reduceindividuals' and family members' resistance and hesita瓳�on to organ dona瓳�on.A Commi��ee on Promo瓳�on of Organ Dona瓳�on chaired by the Under Secretaryfor Food and Health has recently been formed to further promote organdona瓳�on.

To further enhance the online services for CMECPD, theAcademy has developed a mobile applica瓳�on for capturinga��endance ‐ iCMECPD App. It is now available at Apple's AppStore and Google's Play. Fellows may download the App byscanning the respec瓳�ve QR code below (or search "icmecpd"

from App Store/Google Play) and install it in their smartphone with opera瓳�ngsystem in iOS (7.1 or above) or Android (3.0 or above).

Hong Kong Medical Journal (HKMJ) launches a re‐styled website(www.hkmj.org) which offers visitors a more user‐friendly experience! The newlayout is op瓳�mised for any screen size such as desktop, tablet or smartphone.

2015 Impact FactorThe official 2015 Impact Factors (IFs) were recently released, and the IF ofHKMJ has increased from 0.872 in 2014 to 0.887 in 2015. HKMJ would like tothank the authors and reviewers for their con瓳�nuous support.

HKAMedTrack in the Hong Kong Medical Journal

We are delighted to announce that star瓳�ng 1 August 2016, Hong Kong MedicalJournal (HKMJ) will begin the transi瓳�on from our current email‐basedsubmission system to a web‐based submission system by using HKAMedTrack.

HKAMedTrackis a web‐based manuscript system developed by the Hong KongAcademy of Medicine. There are two phases to HKAMedTrack.

The first phase will be up and running on 1 August 2016. In this phase, authorsare able to submit a manuscript via this online system, and to check the statusof their manuscripts at any 瓳�me throughout the refereeing process. In thesecond phase, the peer review process will be conducted online. Authors andreviewers will be no瓳�fied when the second phase is available.

Star瓳�ng 1 August 2016, authors will be requested to submit manuscripts to theHKMJ through HKAMedTrack. Paper manuscripts and email submissions willnot be accepted.

Please look in the coming weeks for detailed instruc瓳�ons available on theHKMJ website when the new system becomes available.

Is pain from mammography reduced by theuse of a radiolucent MammoPad? Localexperience in Hong Kong

Screening mammogram can decrease themortality of breast cancer. This study aimed toevaluate the effec瓳�veness of a radiolucent pad,MammoPad, which significantly reduced thelevel of discomfort experienced duringmammography. Radia瓳�on dose was alsoreduced.

Research Fund for the Control of Infec瓳�ous DiseasesResearch Dissemina瓳�on Reports

Dissemina瓳�on reports are concise informa瓳�ve reports ofhealth‐related research supported by funds administered bythe Food and Health Bureau, for example, the Research Fundfor the Control of Infec�ous Diseases (which was consolidatedinto the Health and Medical Research Fund in December2011). In this edi瓳�on, 10 dissemina瓳�on reports of projectsrelated to respiratory infec瓳�ous diseases and viral hepa瓳�瓳�sare presented. In par瓳�cular, three projects are highlighteddue to their poten瓳�ally significant findings, impact onhealthcare delivery and prac瓳�ce, and/or contribu瓳�on tohealth policy formula瓳�on in Hong Kong.
