recently published a dazzling natural and

urban history of the dramatic

transformation of Seattle’s landscape from

its founding to the present day--and into the

From the filling in of the Duwamish tide flats to the massive regrading project that

pared down Denny Hill, Too High and Too Steep: Reshaping Seattle’s Topography

illuminates how the city's topography and geography have been dramatically altered to

accommodate changing visions and growth. One of David’s previous books, Stories in

A Curious

Historical Anecdote

When their husbands were first hired by

the UW in 1961, Mrs. Thomas F.

Archbold, Mrs. Robert W. Albrecht, and

Mrs. George E. Kenny joined the

Newcomers Group of the Faculty Wives

Club. As was the custom, they remained

in the Newcomers Group for three full

years before actually becoming members

of the Faculty Wives. In their third year,

as it happened, these three women served

together as officers of the Newcomers

Group.

Of course, we know them as Barbara,

Mary, and Mary! The reason we all know

them so well is because Barbara, Mary,

and Mary are currently serving on the

(2015-16) Board and have repeatedly

served, in one capacity or another, on

many boards and committees for, well…

you do the math.

We can not thank Barbara, Mary, and

Mary and people like them enough for

their contribution to the continued success

and longevity of UWFA.

In Memoriam

Patricia Cunningham Fischbach

Pat was born August 2, 1926 in Janesville,

Wisconsin. She graduated from

University of Wisconsin with a BA in

Home Economics in 1948. She worked in

the test kitchens of the Monarch Range

Company and taught high school in Green

Bay, WI, and New Haven, CT. She met

Dave Fischbach at church youth camp in

1947 and they married in 1952. They

moved to Seattle when Dave was hired by

UW in 1967.

Described as energetic, adventurous,

feisty, and pragmatic, Pat was an active

member of the University of Washington

community, where she volunteered at the

escort desk of the UW hospital for more

than 20 years and served as president of

the Faculty Auxiliary (1975) and on the

board of FIUTS, the Foundation for

International Understanding Through

Students. She hiked with the Tuesday

Trekkers, sang with various choral

groups, and participated in the

international dining group. She was a

longtime member of AAUW, and served

as president of the Stanford Mothers' Club

Pacific NW chapter in the late 1970s.

No public memorial service is planned. In

lieu of flowers, the family prefers

contributions to the Patricia C. Fischbach

Scholarship Fund at the University of

Washington.

President’s Message Dear Fellow UWFA Members,

Thank you to all who came to our Annual Business Meeting on Monday, April 11th.

Special thanks to Mary Albrecht and her volunteers for their delicious cookies. Thanks

also go to to Jenelle Ebisu for making us feel so welcome and at home at the UW

Club.

After we approved the minutes and treasurer’s report, I gave a quick overview of what

we accomplished together in 2015-16. Thanks to our webmaster Peter Schiess and his

tech contacts, we have a new UWFA website that has the same look and feel as the

official UW site. Our main page offers a convenient, painless way to donate directly

online to our scholarship fund. I am pleased to announce that our overall donations are

up, thanks to your generosity, including an increase in donations we received through

our donation gift cards. This will enable us to give three scholarships of $4000 next

year, an increase from three $3500 scholarships this year.

We are also happy to announce the rebirth of our lecture series. The Board approved a

proposal by the Long Range Planning Committee for a lunch-and-a-lecture format

rather than dinner and a lecture. The series starts next year with a lunch lecture in

October, February, and March. We will continue to have lectures as usual at our events

– Scholarship Dinner, Annual Business Meeting, and Spring Luncheon-- for a total of

6 lectures.

We listened to you through a poll conducted earlier this year. Many of you said you

don’t like to drive at night. Well, now that we are offering day time lectures, we hope

you will attend!

Nancy Kenagy, Vice President and Chair of the Nominating Committee, presented our

slate of officers, which was approved. We welcome three new board members: Rose

Marie Dale as Vice President, Donna Hahn as Treasurer, and Peter Schiess in the new

board position of Webmaster. I had the pleasure of announcing that the Board elected

Nancy Kenagy as President for 2016-17. The position of Program Chair is still open

and we hope someone will step forward.

We want to thank outgoing board member Barbara Archbold for her many years as

Treasurer and also Esther Neeser and Joan Burton, our Program Co-chairs.

After our business was completed, we were treated to an entertaining, short history on

the 100 year association between the UWFA and the UW Club by Carol Hol.

Program Co-chair Joan Burton introduced our speakers Antoinette Wills and John

Bolcer, authors of a history of the University of Washington

published by Arcadia Publishing. They told the story of how the UW,

now known worldwide for its research and teaching in fields ranging

from arts and sciences to health sciences and high technology, grew

from its founding in 1861 when Seattle was a tiny town.

Kayaking the Wilderness Coast of

Vancouver Island

By Sandy Wood and Friends

Scandinavian Cultural Exchange

The Scandinavian Cultural Exchange interest

group had an outing to Boehm's Candies in

Issaquah on April 13th. The company gave a very

nice tour of the property. The tour included

Julius Boehm's interesting apartment on the

second floor of the authentic Swiss Chalet, the

candy factory (samples included) and the

beautiful High Alpine Chapel.

Members from left to right are: Chris

Christoffersen, Lois Arneson, Jane

Becker, Britt Glomset, Irene Anderssen,

and Janie Hauser.

UW Libraries Special Collections was

the source of most of the illustrations

and pictures in the lecture and book.

The book can be purchased at the UW

Book Store.

See you all at the Spring Luncheon on

May 25th. A registration for m for the

Spring Luncheon is enclosed in this

newsletter.

Dagmar Shannon

UWFA President

Over thirty years ago, Sandy Wood and

several friends spent two or three weeks

each summer exploring the Northwest

coast of Vancouver Island by kayak.

More recently, a few friends reprised an

exploration through Kyuquot Sound and

Busnby Islands in the far northwest

reaches of Vancouver Island. Paddling

for more than two weeks along the shores

and among the islands of this remote

area, they found that little had changes.

They will share photos of their journey as

well as demonstrate their preparation for

the trip, including packing their gear and

provisions into their kayaks.

Seattle Seattle

Seattle Seattle interest group gathers in the downtown bus tunnel before hopping on a

bus for Georgetown and a visit to Fran’s Chocolates, located in an old brick building

that was formerly a brewery. Lunch was at a popular local restaurant, Fonda La

Cantina, which serves authentic Mexican fare.

Interest Group Chair Traudi Krausser talks to leaders after lunch on March 7. Interest

groups are the heart of UWFA and the lunch is a chance to get feed back and inform

leaders of new developments such as the new website.
