HKDR was founded in 2003 for the specific purpose of saving dogs and puppies from

the Hong Kong Government’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department

(AFCD) Animal Management Centres, where around 7,000 dogs and puppies are

destroyed every year. They are homeless and unwanted, and have just four days to live

unless they are chosen for rehoming. Only a small percentage of these dogs and

puppies are lucky enough to be rescued by HKDR.

All of the dogs and puppies that HKDR take in for rehoming are health checked,

vaccinated, given flea, tick and heartworm prevention and desexed. Those who require

additional veterinary treatment or surgery are given the best available. Dogs with

behaviour problems are rehabilitated using Positive Reinforcement training methods to

make them ready for adoption. HKDR is proud to be a No Kill Organisation, meaning

that no dog under our care will be euthanised

for any reason other than when it is the only

humane option.

HKDR is funded almost entirely by private

donations, sponsorship, merchandise sales

and fundraising events, and relies heavily on

the time and efforts of dedicated volunteers to

be able to operate.

Expenses Allocation in 2015

To take care of over 650 dogs, includes:

- Dog food

- Dog veterinary care

- Dog desexing

- Dog supplies

- Dog rehoming facilities operation and

maintenance

- Dog caretakers salary

- Transportation to vet clinic and

adoption events

HKDR is funded almost entirely by private donations, sponsorship, merchandise sales and fundraising

events, and relies heavily on the time and efforts of dedicated volunteers to be able to operate.

Donations, however small, are vital to allow us to take care of over 650 dogs staying at our Homing

Centres, and continue to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned dogs in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Government (AFCD) provide free desexing for all dogs and puppies taken from their

Animal Management Centres (this funding is reviewed each year and is not guaranteed to continue)

as well as an Annual Subvention, the amount of which varies depending on allocation of funds.

HKDR requires all adopters to pay a standard adoption fee which is usually $1500 for an adult which

has been desexed, licensed and vaccinated against infectious disease. The adoption fee for a puppy

is $1000 (which includes free desexing), while giant sized dogs are $2000. Adopters of senior dogs

(over 10 years) are only requested to pay $800, even though the outlay by HKDR is usually higher

than for that of a young dog.

For the Dogs We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned and unwanted dogs and puppies of Hong Kong.

For the Dogs

Rescue Around 7,000 dogs and puppies are officially destroyed by AFCD every year in Hong Kong. They have just four days to live unless they are chosen for re-homing, so HKDR will prioritise the rescue of these dogs first. Around 90% of our dogs were rescued from AFCD while approximately 10% of them were from direct owner surrender. They will then be sent to our two Homing Centres, or foster families, until being adopted.

The dogs that come through AFCD are all ages, shapes, sizes, and all breeds and colours. There is no breed or age discrimination as to which dog lives or dies. The only criteria for selecting dogs for rehoming is that they must be healthy, or in a treatable condition, friendly (or with the potential to be so as many dogs are terrified) and of a homeable type. Currently, we are taking care of more than 650 dogs.

Support

Full Post-Adoption Support • Most dogs end up with us through no fault of their own and go on to make loving,

loyal companions whatever their age. To help with the settling-in period, HKDR

provides full post-adoption support, with free advice on health and general care,

as well as expert training advice from our in-house trainer.

For the Dogs

HKDR is proud to be a fully "No Kill" Organisation meaning that no dog under our care will be euthanised for any reason other than when it is the only humane option. Our pledge to every dog is a home for life.

HKDR also provides a unique haven for the few dogs that are too traumatised by past abuse to be considered homeable, or are perhaps simply too old.

No-Kill Promise

HKDR is currently taking care of around 650 dogs and we will continue to provide the love, care and necessary veterinary care they need, until they find their forever home or their lives end naturally.

For the Community We believe education is the solution to tackling animal abandonment and abuse. Our 10-plus years of experience in the field of dog rescue work provides a solid base to support our efforts in teaching and promoting responsible pet ownership, correct attitudes towards dogs and their welfare, and positive reinforcement, reward-based training for all companion animals.

Education

Centre

Our Education & Training Centre was opened in 2013, conveniently located

directly opposite the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre. This small venue is used for a

variety of workshops and classes, all of which are designed to help improve

dog-human understanding and so reduce the number of pets being abandoned.

Since starting our education programme we have already reached several

thousand dog lovers, students, adults, schools and organisations.

Students

Educational Talks & Workshops

• In 2015, HKDR held 25 educational talks and workshops to educate children

about pet welfare, adoption and responsible pet ownership.

• Specially selected and friendly dogs also participated in these group classes

where participants can learn the correct way to approach a strange dog,

grooming, and gain other hands-on handling experience.

– Internship, Seminar & Group volunteering

• In 2015, HKDR conducted 20 group visits for university students to let

them understand our daily operation and challenges up close, and how

our dogs live day-to-day.

• HKDR participated in various internship programmes and delivered

educational seminars.

Adults

Kennel Visit & Group Volunteering

• In 2015, HKDR organised several adult groups to visit our Homing Centres

to understand our daily operation up close and how our dogs live day-to-

day. Through group volunteering (e.g. dog walking, kennel maintenance,

cleaning etc.), they had the chance to understand the challenges HKDR

faces.

Dog Owners Positive Partners Dog-Human Training Course

• HKDR also runs monthly “Positive Partners” dog-human training courses

for dogs and their owners at Whiskers N Paws in Horizon Plaza, Ap Lei

Chau. We aim at teaching the proper positive training methods that

ensure a happy and rewarding dog-human partnership.

• 18 classes of training course were run in 2015, coaching over 80 families.

We also made use of different platforms to educate the dog owners about

up-to-date dog parenting knowledge, for example, videos, columns and

workshops etc.

We are frequently invited by various media to take part in interviews, and

participate in or host public events to help spread the message and promote

HKDR. We also cooperated with several private sectors or companies to run

mass communication campaigns to promote the message of responsible

ownership. HKDR never pay for advertising and rely on free offers of

advertising space or PR opportunities to promote our work.
