Foreword
University College Roosevelt is a liberal arts and sciences undergraduate honors college of
Utrecht University dedicated to providing the best possible teaching and learning environment
for its students. In addition to its core aim as a teaching college, UCR is involved in both regular
and undergraduate research. It is our conviction that within a university setting there can be no
sustained teaching excellence without research. This research report provides an overview of
the output of the research activities in the course of 2015. It is the third consecutive annual
UCR research report to be published. This foreword briefly synopsizes some of the successes in
this report.
Undergraduate research (UR) is a centrally important activity at UCR. For a teaching college it is
also the ideal way to support faculty whose main work is focused on teaching and service.
Working in teams with talented UR students on contemporary societal research projects gives
energy and dynamism to students and faculty alike. The undergraduate research community is
funded through the student undergraduate research fund (SURF) which helps students
financially with either internships for data collection or for presenting their work at either
senior international research conferences or undergraduate research conferences. €25,000 is
set aside for this. UCR funded 22 such projects in 2015. UCR students presented their research
at major international conferences in, for example, the UK (stylistics/linguistics), Norway
(psychology) and Denmark (psychology). Research internships were conducted in Bogota,
Columbia, New York and closer to home in Utrecht/Nieuwegein and Eindhoven. More than
twenty UCR students were also selected to present their research (SCI, SSC & A&H) at the
national undergraduate research conference held in November 2015 in Middelburg.
Undergraduate research is also funded at UCR through the Utrecht University PUUR project
(the program for upgrading undergraduate research) which UCR shares with her sister college
UCU. It is a two-year program (2015-2016). Four PUUR UR research seminars are planned in this
two-year period. One of those seminars, which was on human rights, took place in 2015 in
cooperation with the Center for Humanities at Utrecht University. A publication (an edited
volume) of the students’ work is forthcoming in 2016. The PUUR project also stimulates
research within UU by means of summer internships whereby students work alongside both
senior scholars and their PhD students, usually gathering and analyzing data. In 2015 two UCR
students took up such an internship, one of whom went on to become a member of the main
research team, attending a conference with them in Poland in the autumn to present the
4
findings of the project. An interim assessment of the PUUR program by UU held in the summer
of 2015 labelled the project a success, saying that they are ‘very pleased with the results
booked in the first year’. The PUUR webpage hosted by UU also went live during the summer
http://www.uu.nl/onderwijs/puur-project-for-upgrading-undergraduate-research
In addition to the SURF and PUUR programs, UCR is also active in UR within the Erasmus+
BLASTER grant framework (the “best of liberal arts and sciences expanded and reinforced”):
Undergrauduate Research is one of the three core pillars within that project. UCR also produces
an annual edition of the undergraduate research journal Ad Astra. https://issuu.com/adastraucr
In addition to the undergraduate research at UCR, many UCR faculty members have been
research active in 2015. Academic research performed UCR faculty in 2015 has been published
in a variety of top journals ranging from Frontiers in Human Neuroscience and PLoS One to the
International Journal of Human Rights. Books and chapters have also come out with leading
publishers including Cambridge University Press, Palgrave Macmillan and Brill. Books have been
published by UCR faculty on the topics of global citizenship, the politics of the European Union
and sculpture in archaic and classical Athens. The published papers and books reflect the
diversity in scientific background and broad interest of UCR’s faculty. During 2015, four UCR
faculty members completed and successfully defended their PhD thesis and two new full
professors were appointed from outside the institution to help strengthen the research profile
of the college.
A significant number of research talks were delivered by UCR faculty at international and
national academic conferences. These included a number of keynote addresses. Many UCR
faculty serve on editorial boards of journals and academic organizations, they review article
manuscripts, they edit the work of their peers, they sit as panel members of promotions, they
evaluate sister departments in national audits. The full professors within the UCR faculty are
also supervising several PhD candidates, some of whom defended their PhDs at Utrecht
University in the course of 2015. UCR full professors also played important roles as external
examiners on PhD committees at other universities.
Outreach to the local community remains paramount to UCR’s research aspirations. Successful
ongoing local research projects include the “practical markers for Alzheimer’s disease” project
and the related “effects of light therapy in people with dementia” project.
Some of the many research highlights from 2015 include the hosting of a large international
conference in Middelburg on global citizenship and the founding of the ancient sculpture
5
association (jointly run from UCR and Duke University but hosted at UCR). UCR also helped to
co-found the Zeeland graduate community (ZGC) which is based in Middelburg and is an
initiative of the full professors of Zeeland, an independent body chaired by the UCR director of
research and of which many UCR full professors are members. Furthermore, funding was won
by UCR faculty in the form of the Erasmus+ BLASTER grant and the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet
grant. Also, the EU funded TERRA II program, which aims to develop educational tools to foster
emotional and social skills, amongst other things to combat radicalization, made important
ground towards completion.
Moreover, Kairos, the UCR humanities and social sciences research center, was also active again
in 2015 organizing an international symposium on ‘War, Identity and Cultural Heritage’ and
hosting a number of national and international speakers including the American psychologist
and cognitive scientist Lawrence Barsalou. Internally, UCR hosted eight research lunch talks
throughout the year from both senior faculty and early career researchers (including PhD
students). December 2015 also saw the founding of the first UCR cross-disciplinary research
group: “Mind, Culture, Communication & Brain”, an idea that came out of the research
committee to foster the LAS philosophy in research. A number of UCR faculty from science,
social science and humanities got together to design and execute experiments together with a
number of talented UCR students. Publications, seminars and grant proposals are all in the
pipeline for 2016 and beyond. More cross-disciplinary research groups are in the make,
focusing on such things as ‘sustainability/the environment’ and ‘big (digital) data’.
UCR has also actively supported the initiatives to strengthen Zeeland’s knowledge
infrastructure in 2015. In spring 2015, UCR played a key role in writing the report ‘De Slimme
Kracht van Zeeland’ (Zeeland’s smart power) that made it to provincial policy. UCR also
contributed to ‘Campus Zeeland’, a policy memorandum drawn up by the Onderwijsautoriteit
Zeeland (Zeeland Teaching Authority) that emphasizes the crucial importance of strengthening
higher education and research in Zeeland. Some of the initiatives in it are the Roosevelt Centre
for Excellence in Education, a Platform on Delta Research and a Second College with a focus on
technology. In addition, the OAZ proposes ‘Knowledge Tables’ in which knowledge institutions,
companies and other organizations work on societal problems. These initiatives create research
opportunities for UCR faculty, for instance via support for research on teaching excellence,
healthy ageing and social inclusion. Campus Zeeland was adopted as provincial policy after the
2015 elections. The RCEE, as one of the main Campus Zeeland initiatives, booked a number of
academic successes in 2015, amongst which obtaining an NRO-grant for post-doctoral research
6
and an NWO-teaching grant for a PhD researcher. In all, three new PhD students started at the
RCEE in 2015.
Another way in which UCR contributes to general academic research in Zeeland is via its
support to PhD students in general. UCR professors supervise PhDs, some of whom are in
Middelburg, whilst others work elsewhere. To contribute to the general success of the PhD
students in Middelburg UCR opened a PhD community in the Burg, and organized a number of
lectures for the student.
Allocating faculty the time to do research and to embark on new research projects is also a key
element of UCRs employability strategy, adopted in December 2015. Here, a plan is drawn up
to support research sabbaticals, and to invest in high potential researchers. Seeking funding for
the ‘Towards a College Career’ policy is one of the priorities for 2016.
In 2015, faculty research activities at UCR were stimulated by financial support from the
research fund. The director of Research manages three research budgets: two UR and one
faculty research (and PhD research). A total of €25.000 was available for faculty research, from
which €5,000 was earmarked for (PhD) graduate funding. Faculty could also have a conference
presentation visit directly funded from their own departmental budget (depending on budget
and the budget division strategy). Undergraduate research projects (primarily internships and
conference talks) could claim funds from the (SURF) Student Undergraduate Research Fund for
which €25,000 is available. The internship money for the (PUUR) Project for Upgrading
Undergraduate Research totaled €7,500. The current director of research started as PUUR UR
coordinator on January 1st 2015, as SURF UR coordinator on May 1 2015 and as Director of
Faculty Research on September 1st, 2015 and has managed these budgets since these dates.
In this report, the names of UCR faculty members are underlined. UCR students who serve as
co-authors or co-presenters are indicated with an asterisk*. Note that since undergraduates
publish together with faculty, such undergraduate publications will be reported in the both the
faculty research overview and in the undergraduate research report.
