FOREWARD BY THE DEAN
I would like to express my thanks for being given the opportunity again to deliver the welcoming note to our school’s 2014 annual report. It is a great pleasure to welcome you to another edition of the Annual Report of the School of Computer
Sciences (PPSKomp), Universiti Sains Malaysia. Based on overwhelming remarks on our previous year’s edition the school decided to continue our annual report in the e‐magazine form.
This year will be a special year for PPSKomp as it marked 20 years of accomplishments and achievements. The school has shown marked improvements in various areas such as research and innovation, teaching, supervision, publications, and industry and community engagement in order to be in line with both the university’s and the school’s mission and vision. All these achievements would not have been possible without the continuous commitment and support from every member of the school. Thank you all for your commitment. The trust from the university’s top management is also a crucial element in the success of the school. I would therefore like to extend my sincerest thanks to USM’s management aptly led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Omar Osman.
I am confident that this annual report will be beneficial to our future students and the public seeking the latest information on academic, research and other activities. It is my hope that this annual report will assist in disseminating a clearer and more detailed information on research and the researchers in the School. This will also be beneficial to those aspiring to conduct research or become graduate students at PPSKomp.
Again, I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the editorial board members and all those involved for their tireless effort and dedication in producing this report.
Thank you.
Prof. Ahamad Tajuddin Khader

INTRODUCTION
The School of Computer Sciences was established officially on the 1st of March 1995 after functioning for a period of 20 years as the Division of Computer Science, an independent and autonomous unit within the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. Over the years, the school has been engaging in various developments, advances, and achievements of computer science pertaining to the academic programmes, research and development, consultancy, community services and others. The school is now in a leading position as far as research and development activities are concerned and are gearing up its efforts to meet new challenges of research and development by restructuring our research activities/groups into 3 clusters to support our research activities. These 3 clusters (Enabling Technologies & Infrastructure, Data‐to‐Knowledge, and Service Computing) can be seen as our integrated approach in line with the emerging trend of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The school has been maintaining strong and strategic linkages with the industry. Formal and informal events has been organised to exchange ideas that benefit the curriculum and the industry. The school has been involved in various joint projects with all types of industries supported by the national and international grants. The school has also been involved in consultancies, particularly in software system developments. In terms of global partners, the school has always maintained strong and strategic linkages with universities in North America, Europe, Australia, Japan, Singapore and the Middle East. These smart partnerships include long‐standing research collaborations with several French universities on natural language processing, distributed computing and artificial intelligence. The joint supervision of postgraduate students is made possible through such linkages. Over the next decade, the School of Computer Sciences will continue its efforts to strengthen its curriculum and research in order to produce quality graduates and to contribute to the sustainable development of the nation.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME: POSTGRADUATE
Postgraduate Programme
Mixed mode programme ‐ Master of Science (Computer Science)
This programme started as a coursework programme offered in the 1996/97 academic year. It had been suitably revised
in the 2001/02 academic year and subsequently in the 2007/08 academic year it was offered as a mixed mode
programme.
Mixed mode programme ‐ Master of Informatics (M.Informatics)
In 2014, the school introduced new programme which is the Master of Informatics (M.Informatics) by coursework
replacing Master of Science (Information Technology Technopreneurship).
Research programme ‐ PhD. & M.Sc. by Research
A research degree is awarded primarily on the basis of a thesis embodying the results of a research project and any
coursework topics (when necessary) or other formal studies required by the University and School of Computer Sciences
to be undertaken during the candidature.
The degree can be pursued under the supervision of at least one academic staff of the School. Under this mode of study,
the candidate is required to complete a thesis within a stipulated time period. Usually, full‐time candidates for M.Sc.
complete their theses in 12 – 18 months and for PhD. in 30 – 40 months.

SPECIAL REPORT
The EBA Consortium:
An innovative approach to educating Asia's future leaders The University Consortium for Evidence Based Approach (EBA) to the Emergent Issues in Asia‐‐known as the EBA Consortium‐‐is a
collaborative initiative between Keio and seven of ASEAN's top universities to provide talented students with the ability to identify
and tackle new issues emerging in Asia. Selected for the Japanese government's "Re‐inventing Japan Project" in 2012, the
consortium's program adopts a combination of remote learning and practical fieldwork projects allowing students at each of the
member universities to equip themselves with skills in Information Technology and social development as well as specialist
knowledge in areas such as disaster and security, health, energy, and environment.
As the program enters its second year, Keio Global spoke to faculty members and students from Keio and other consortium
universities to find out more about this unique alliance and its work so far.
EBA Internships
Internships are also offered as opportunities for students to gain practical experience both in other member universities and in
industry. Students Salah Salem from Universiti Sains Malaysia and Dita Oktaria from Universitas Brawijaya are currently taking part
in an internship in Japan, including two four week sessions at SFC and one four week session at Yamaha Corporation in Shizuoka
prefecture. They shared their thoughts on the internship and the EBA program.

Saleh Salam, Doctoral Program,
School of Computer Sciences Universiti Sains Malaysia
"I am researching database security. I thought it would benefit my research in terms of the globalization of the data and how we can
deal with it in terms of protecting privacy. I think this experience might help me put my research in a context that will help me to
finalize it. Then I will become involved in this through SOI Asia Project‐‐at my university. I have learned during this last four weeks on
how we deal with distance education; there are pros but also some cons that we have to work on improving in the future."
EBA Fieldwork
The first of the EBA fieldwork projects, the Minamata fieldwork program, was held in August 2013. This project brought together a
group of 9 Keio students and 14 ASEAN students from EBA Consortium universities to look at the issues surrounding Minamata
disease, which was caused by mercury pollution from a chemical factory and affected the city of Minamata, Kyushu, in the 1950s.
Fieldwork participants attended an orientation session held at Mita Campus to get to know each other and take a tour of the
campus, before visiting Minamata, where they gained an overview of the issue from specialists, and visited the work places of the
victims and other related facilities to see and hear evidence from local residents.
