Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation exists to promote the prevention and treatment of illness and injury in children.

Our core purpose is to provide significant financial assistance for the support of equipment, research and clinical services at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

Our vision is to be world-class in our operations and a catalyst to inspiring better outcomes for critically ill and injured children.

Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick is one of Australia’s leading specialist medical centres for children, offering a safe and friendly healing environment for children from Sydney, rural and regional NSW, and beyond.

Each year, our Hospital cares for more than 39,000 critically ill and injured children, with on average 100 children a day coming through the Emergency doors, and more than 312,000 occasions of specialist

care provided each year through the Inpatient, Outpatient and Community Health services.

Our award-winning, world class Hospital is a leader in its field and continues to work to improve the treatment of, and care for, this and future generations of sick children.

As the principal fundraising body for the Hospital, the Foundation works with individuals, businesses and organisations in the community to support the Hospital.

Sadly, we mourned the untimely passing of David Coe in January. David was a former Board Member and Hall of Champions supporter, whose generosity and support will be remembered for years to come.

Having celebrated the opening of the Ainsworth Building, the focus of our capital appeal fundraising efforts over the past two years, and a record-breaking Gold Telethon, our focus is firmly set on the future and how the Foundation can play our role in investing in the best of child health projects.

We are justly proud of our achievements and humbled by the generosity of the community. Sincere thanks to our CEO Adam Check and his team for their energies.

Thank you for your continuing support of Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation.

DUNCAN MAKEIG Chairman Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation

I am pleased to present you the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation’s 2012-13 Annual Report, as we look back on an inspiring year of progress and generosity.

In the Financial Year of 2012-13, the Foundation contributed $19.3M to Sydney Children’s’ Hospital, Randwick, which pursues our vision to be a catalyst to inspiring better outcomes for critically ill and injured children. Most notably, this record total ensured the completion of the Ainsworth Building, thanks to you, our loyal supporters.

It is an honour to chair a Board of such committed members and I pay tribute to Board Members past and present for their service. Jack Ford, who most ably chaired the Foundation, serving on the Board since 1999, was fondly farewelled in October. Jack made an outstanding contribution to the progress of the Foundation and the future of child health, one that will continue in his role on the Board of the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network. Chris Jordan was also a retiree, and we thank him for his support over the past eight years, particularly in his role as Treasurer.

This year, we welcomed Gina Cass-Gottlieb, Ron Malek and Barbara Ward to the Board.

The past year has been one of the most dynamic periods of growth in the proud history of Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Thanks to you – our incredible family of benefactors, supporters, advocates and volunteers – we have been able to contribute a record amount of funds, delivering on our commitment and vision to inspire better outcomes for critically ill and injured children.

As your CEO, I am truly privileged and fortunate to lead this great Foundation. I work with wonderful people every single day – our staff, our directors, our donors and volunteers – and together, we make extraordinary things happen and we make dreams possible.

Five years ago, one of those dreams was the creation of a new building at Sydney Children’s Hospital. In July of this year, that dream became a reality with the completion and opening of the now known ‘Ainsworth Building’, in honour of one of our most esteemed supporters, and true gentleman, Mr Len Ainsworth. The Ainsworth Building has heralded a new era of healthcare on the Randwick campus. This state-of-the-art, magnificent, new building now graces our campus and is utilised by staff and families every day. It enhances our mission to provide children with the very best of care now, and in the future. Thank you to those who very generously supported this important construction.

This year, thanks to the outstanding support of major partner, Kids With Cancer Foundation, we also completed the first stage of our new Kids Cancer Centre. The Centre gives our Cancer team a new home, enabling 45 clinical staff, researchers and fellows to co-locate in a dedicated, ‘best practice’ centre overseeing their work in drug discovery,

therapeutic trials, supportive care for children and their families, and the prediction and prevention of cancer-related health problems.

The Neurosurgical Service received a $1M enhancement thanks to this year’s Gold Dinner. It will enable the building of an integrated operating theatre, fitted with the latest technology, to allow our brilliant surgeons to perform minimally-invasive neurosurgical procedures on children with conditions such as brain tumours and epilepsy.

This year 13 Fellows received specialist training and research opportunities in their chosen field, while numerous pieces of specialist equipment have been purchased to provide the best of care for our children. Together with your support, we have touched almost every area of our wonderful Hospital.

Having committed to what we set out to achieve five years ago, we are now at the cusp of setting a new vision for the next five years. In addition to the important services, equipment and staffing we will continue to support, research will be at the heart of our priorities. I look forward to sharing these aspirations with you soon, and trust that you will remain steadfast in your support as we inspire better outcomes for critically ill and injured children.

Thank you for your trust, your empathy, and your generosity.

The past 12 months has been a period of great achievement for Sydney Children’s Hospital, with the opening of our much anticipated new wing, the Ainsworth Building, one of the year’s key highlights.

The Ainsworth Building has ensured that our world-class Hospital can provide sick children and their families with access to contemporary facilities, both now and into the future.

The new building is home to a brand new eight-bed purpose-built child and adolescent mental health unit; a 28-bed short-stay surgical unit; a comprehensive rehabilitation centre; a world-class respiratory laboratory, which includes the only infant lung function laboratory in Sydney; a new Child Protection Unit and clinical office space for health care professionals from a range of disciplines.

Caring for patients and families is a team effort and could not be done without the support of generous donors. An outstanding $15 million was pledged and subsequently raised by the Foundation to help fund the new Ainsworth Building. This pledge in conjunction with the contribution of the State Government has enabled the vision to be realised.

The Foundation has also continued to provide our Hospital with support in many other ways. From the funding of positions, purchase of medical equipment and refurbishing of clinical space, to the delivery of special initiatives such as the Arts Program.

While we are inspired daily by the strength and bravery of the patients and families we care for, we are also inspired by those who support our work through donations or volunteering.

What is remarkable is the diversity of donor sources, from the children who choose to donate their pocket money to the corporate groups who donate millions. Every individual donation makes a difference to the work we undertake.

On behalf of the team at Sydney Children’s Hospital, thank you to Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation and supporters for continuing to support our patients, families and staff.

2120 Established in 2004, Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia (‘Children’s Hospitals’) is the national fundraising partnership of Australia’s five leading children’s hospital foundations.

Formed to address the gap in fostering stronger relationships with corporate Australia, ‘Children’s Hospitals’ is the only organisation that offers a direct support access to a national network of children’s hospitals through a single gateway.

In July 2012, Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation took over the administration of ‘Children’s Hospitals’, which is based at the Foundation’s office.

A total of $844,384 was distributed to the five partner foundations, in 2012-2013, and directed into the areas of greatest need, as determined by each hospital.

At Sydney Children’s Hospital, their support provided vital funding for the new Lung Function Testing Facility for Infants, an infant bronchoscope for the Respiratory Department and the much needed refurbishment of the Adolescent Ward’s dining and recreation rooms.

‘Children’s Hospitals’ and its Partner Foundations are dedicated to improving the quality of life of sick and injured children across Australia. The projects, initiatives and activities funded by the partnership create outcomes for children that are above and beyond the hospitals normal day-to-day activities. They ensure the highest standard of care and ongoing improvements in paediatric healthcare outcomes.

The Foundation is proud to be a partner of Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia, and to work together with the other Partner Foundations across the country to provide the best possible healthcare for all Australian children.

Our people are our greatest asset. They create our unique and exceptional organisational culture – by being proactive, leading, working as one, and challenging themselves and each other to strive and grow.

DEVELOPING OUR PEOPLE

The Foundation works hard to develop and retain our skilled and experienced workforce. Each year, all employees set development plans which are reviewed quarterly.

We provide access to experiential learning opportunities for all staff, including participation in cross functional taskforces and working parties, access to mentoring, staff leading key organisational projects outside their role and on the job training.

To ensure all staff reach their full potential, the Foundation allocates a budget to support external development activities. In 2012-2013 development activities included; external executive coaching and mentoring, Australian Institute of Management courses, grant writing, programs through the Fundraising Institute of Australia and a range of role specific technical training.

The leadership team participated in an externally facilitated 360 degree feedback process to further inform their performance, career and succession planning.

WORKFORCE PLANNING

During the year the Foundation made a significant investment in the development of a talent and succession framework. This was a collaborative project with input from across the organisation and the Board of Directors. The framework will support the implementation of structured talent development and career planning initiatives throughout the organisation.

PROMOTING A SAFE AND HEALTHY WORKFORCE The Foundation operates in compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation in NSW.

The Foundation has a number of trained first aid officers and each year a number of staff participate in safety training with the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

Moving forward, a cross functional Space, Environment and Safety team will be formed to increase the profile of safety in the organisation and ensure effective consultation processes are in place to identify and address safety matters.

OUR PEOPLE .......

RECOGNISING OUR PEOPLE Recognising and rewarding the achievements of our staff continued to be an important focus for the organisation. Staff efforts and achievements were acknowledged at a number of events throughout the year, as well as through the two recognition awards.

OURPRECIOUSVOLUNTEERS .......

OUR PEOPLE AND CULTUREOUR PEOPLE AND CULTURE

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for their time, assistance and commitment to our Hospital.

Our volunteers come from many different backgrounds, but they all come to us with a unified purpose; to make a difference to the lives of critically ill and injured children.

Last year 896 volunteers donated their valuable time to assist us across nearly every aspect of our organisation. Before undertaking their duties with us, each volunteer undergoes a thorough induction process.

.......

SO HOW DID OUR VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE LAST YEAR?

At our fundraising events, 235 people sold raffle tickets, spotted for auction bidders and bucket collected.

Armed with big hearts and even bigger smiles, 310 volunteers came to us with their colleagues through our Corporate Volunteering Program, helping in the Hospital as well as decorating the wards gold for our Gold Telethon.

Others helped out by doing community service as part of a high school program, cooked barbeques for special occasions and spent time with our patients.

150 volunteers proudly volunteered on the wards with Play Therapy, providing administrative support and help with the weekend play program.

201 volunteers manned the phone lines for nine hours on Monday June 10 to support our Gold Telethon, taking an unbelievable 6,640 donation calls from our supporters across NSW and beyond.

The value our volunteers provide our organisation is outstanding. We could never put a price tag on the spirit, enthusiasm and generosity of our volunteers, but if we were to pay our volunteers for their time, more than $127,805.07 would be required to come close to valuing their support*. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who believe these funds are better spent making a difference to the lives of children and their families.

Our volunteers are exceptional people who give their time, expertise and dedication.

EVENT COMMITTEES

The Foundation held 13 fundraising events throughout the year. For each event we work closely with an organising committee of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly on all aspects of the event to ensure it raises maximum funds for the Hospital.

Thank you to everyone involved for giving us your time and expertise.

*based on an average 2010 Australian wage of $24.63 per hour according to The Australia Bureau of Statistics.

SUSTAINABILITYEFFORTS AND AWARENESS .......

A key area of growth for the Foundation is reducing our environmental impact throughout the whole of the organisation. In the 2011-2012 financial year the Foundation appointed a member of staff to promote sustainable awareness and implement an ongoing strategy.

In 2012-2013 we continued to implement key elements of the original strategy including the use of:

.......

Moving forward we put in place a strategy to increase online peer-to-peer fundraising which reduces the use of resources and physical paper receipts.

The Foundation also improved the use of online communications including regular EDMs, increased focus on social media profiles and encouraged the use of online invitations to Foundation events.

Our ability to communicate about the Hospital and our fundraising efforts is crucial to our success. This is only possible thanks to the generous support of the media who share our stories and motivate the community to give.

This year more than $3.95M worth of media support was achieved across broadcast, outdoor and online media.

We would particularly like to acknowledge the support of: Channel Nine, WIN, NBN, 101.7 WSFM, Mix 106.5, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph, APN Outdoor, AdShel, NewsLocal, 2DayFM and Mi9 for their generous media partnerships and support.

A particular focus for the past financial year for the Foundation was in the online space, particularly social media. We regularly update our social media profiles through Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn about what is happening in the Foundation, including events, community donations and other fundraising activities.

GOLD TELETHON 2013 .......

THE YEAR THAT WASTHE YEAR THAT WAS

The fourth annual Gold Telethon was held Monday 10th June 2013; broadcast live all-day across NSW on Channel Nine, WIN and NBN.

As the major annual fundraiser for the Foundation it featured an array of high-profile stars, who hosted, performed challenges and answered phones, all in support of Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

The overwhelming generosity and support of the community, schools and our valued partners helped raise a remarkable $4.1 million. These much needed funds will help the Hospital purchase equipment, refurbish wards, fund vital research and clinical services and continue to provide world class care for our young patients.

The celebrity phone bank was filled with familiar faces, who took the all-important donations from viewers. The star studded phone bank included; swimmers Stephanie Rice, Geoff Huegill, Channel Nine personalities Ben Fordham and Richard Wilkins, and House Husband’s Gary Sweet, Rhys Muldoon, Natalie Saleeba, and

Tim Campbell. A special afternoon appearance by Geri Halliwell really spiced things up as well!

Several organisations made generous donations including; The Australian Lion Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, The Star, PayPal, the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation, Big W, The Daily Telegraph, Crust Gourmet Pizza, and the Kids with Cancer Foundation. Our Schools and Host Your Own programs saw the community rally together in support, and our new Million Dollar Club small business initiative was a great success. We also received significant support from on the day donations, which came through via phone, SMS, our website, and our Gold Telethon app, powered by GiveEasy.

None of this would have been possible without the support of our partners, Channel Nine, WIN, NBN, APN Outdoor, Adshel, 101.7 WSFM, Mix 106.5, The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph.

Thank you so much to everyone involved – your continued support ensures we can continue to make a difference to the lives of sick and injured children and their families.

THE YEAR THAT WASTHE YEAR THAT WAS

The mission of our Art Program is to provide patients and the communities of the Hospital with a window to an exterior world that inspires, educates and entertains. This year the program, funded by the Foundation and major partner, Louis Vuitton Australia, continued to flourish and provided a great service to Hospital patients, their families and the extended community.

If you would like to find out more about the Arts Program go to www.facebook.com/SydneyKidsArt

ARTS PROGRAM .......

HIGHLIGHTS .......ART WORKSHOPS MOVE TO THE NEXT LEVEL…

Thanks to funding by Louis Vuitton, the ArtEx workshop program blossomed in terms of scale and scope this year, including the inception of an Arts Educator. More than 30 workshops took place using a new model where the artists worked bedside one-to-one with patients. Some of the outcomes this year include medical staff using the art practices as ongoing rehabilitation techniques, and patients developing new art skills which they kept using long after the workshop was completed.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS KEEPING THE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT VIBRANT AND DYNAMIC

We hosted more than 35 shows this year featuring some innovative and popular artists from the College of Fine Arts (UNSW), the National Art School and a wide range of other dealer galleries. Every three months the Hospital was completely transformed as new exhibitions were installed along every major corridor, with the help of our wonderful team of Arts Volunteers. Thanks to the generosity of our exhibitors we sold a record 137 artworks to Hospital staff, patients and their families, and visitors, with proceeds donated to the Hospital.

This year also saw the second annual INSPIRE! Secondary School’s Art Prize which featured 35 entries from schools across Sydney, as well as the popular show “Botany Bay” curated by the Art Program in partnership with National Parks and Wildlife Service NSW.

ACHIEVING A NATIONALLY IMPORTANT COLLECTION

With the opening of the new Ainsworth Building (see more on page 68) the Art Program went on an acquisition drive to secure new and important art for the Permanent Collection. With the help of new partners such as ANG Art Consulting, Ken Done Gallery and a range of collectors and philanthropists, the Collection added another 25 artworks of national importance including paintings by Mike Chavez, Andrew O’Brien and Deborah Halpern to help brighten the walls of our Hospital.

For ten years community donations have funded the position of Child Protection Unit Group Work Coordinator Nicki Wickham, enabling her to work with children and their families who have suffered from physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

HOW YOUR SUPPORT HELPED- CPU GROUP WORKPROGRAMS .......

The Group Work Programs are therapy and support groups for abused children and their parents and carers. Initially this program started as a trial, but thanks to community support, funding was extended and the program has continued for more than a decade, providing vital support to hundreds of affected children and their families.

The internationally recognised program is not run through any other children’s hospital in Australia and provides a safe, supportive environment for children, their parents and carers to share their stories and work through their emotions and issues relating from the abuse.

Ms Wickham’s favourite part of the job is “Seeing the change in the kids, a lot of these children feel isolated and don’t know where to turn or who to talk to and we provide that for them - you get to see their confidence grow as they stop blaming themselves.”

Sophie struggled for breath since the moment she was born. Whisked away for tests when she was just minutes old, doctors discovered fluid on her lungs, while further scans revealed a major problem with her right lung. She also suffered from a narrowed airway, making it even more difficult for her to get oxygen into her tiny body. She spent the first five months of her life on ventilators, before she started breathing on her own, and she was discharged from our Hospital.

After just four days at home, Sophie stopped breathing and was rushed to our Emergency Department, where she was resuscitated. She spent another month in the Hospital, before being allowed home again. Over the next three years, Sophie was rushed to the Hospital countless times, straight to the Emergency Department for resuscitation. “Each time was very frightening, we nearly lost her on a few occasions”, Sophie’s mum Ieni said.

Sophie continues to take several medications to prevent her getting ill, but she is slowly being weaned off them. She is looking forward to starting school next year, and loves playing with her four older sisters.

Traditionally doctors and nurses have gained knowledge and practical skills in acute paediatric care through experience with real patients. Simulation allows staff to work through an emergency situation, reflect on their performance and review how and why they made decisions. This results in the staff being better prepared to provide the best care for seriously ill children like Sophie.

Many clinicians who have done simulation training describe it as the single most valuable and meaningful learning experience of their careers.

.......

Funds donated by the community has enabled the Hospital to provide a regular simulation training program to staff, with the use of a simulation baby, which reacts to treatment in the same way a child would.

AVA’SSTORY .......2 YEARS OLD NEUROBLASTOMA

.......Ava was just six-months-old when she was rushed to our Emergency Department, struggling to breathe with her eyes rolling into the back of her head and her lips turning blue. Doctors originally thought Ava was choking on something, but devastatingly tests revealed a five and a half centimetre cancerous tumour called a Neuroblastoma in her chest and abdomen. The cancer had also spread to her bones.

Little Ava was immediately started on a course of chemotherapy treatment, and over the next 12 months, was in and out of Hospital, during which she endured eight rounds of chemotherapy and three operations to try and rid her of the tumours, one of which was entwined around her spine and considered too dangerous to operate on.

While doctors were deciding on the next step in Ava’s treatment, it was discovered that thankfully the inoperable tumour had matured and become non-cancerous. Ava was able to stop her intensive treatment and is now in remission.

Now a bubbly two and half year old, Ava is out-going, bright and inquisitive and loves playing with her friends at daycare.

.......

Each year in Australia, more than 600 children are diagnosed with cancer. The most commonly diagnosed cancer in children aged five and under, is Neuroblastoma.

Unfortunately, there is a poor cure rate for this disease. Thanks to community funding, the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick has begun a ground-breaking clinical trial in the treatment of relapsed Neuroblastoma patients. The trial combines two commonly available drugs, and aims to treat patients with the goal of shrinking the tumour by 20%, ultimately working towards a 100% survival rate for children with relapsed Neuroblastoma.

This ground-breaking trial is seen as a last chance at a cure for some patients before moving onto palliative care.

During the past twelve months, many steps have been taken in the development of this trial. Among these developments, five patients were screened for participation in the trial, and funds have been put in trust to allow a total of 25 patients to be enrolled in the trial. The trial has also received approval from Australia and New Zealand Children’s Haematology/Oncology Group (ANZCHOG) to begin internationally.

This trial would not be possible without funds donated through our generous community fundraising. Research like this is invaluable to our young patients and demonstrates perfectly how your help makes a difference in the lives of our children.

ALEX’SSTORY .......4 YEARS OLD SLEEP STUDY PATIENT .......Since he was born, Alex, 4, never slept properly or comfortably. His parents originally thought he had silent reflux, the same as his older sister, but when treatment didn’t work, Alex underwent a number of tests and procedures, including having his adenoids removed.

After a number of different treatments proved unsuccessful, Alex was brought to Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick to undergo a sleep study.

The results of the sleep study revealed Alex suffers from a condition called Restless Legs Syndrome, which is characterised by the compelling urge to move your legs, usually when a person is trying to sleep. This meant Alex was heavily sleep deprived, affecting his development and in turn the whole family suffered from his restless nights.

Since his Sleep Study, Alex is now receiving treatment, which has shown improvements in his sleep, allowing the family to get a good nights rest.

......

Each year our Sleep Medicine Unit treats more than 800 children, assessing them for complex and challenging conditions such as respiratory failure, childhood narcolepsy and nocturnal seizures.

HOW YOUR SUPPORT HELPED-THE SLEEPSTUDY SYSTEM .......

The Sleep Study System is a computerised system which conducts a thorough evaluation of each patient to measure brain waves, airflow, breathing effort, body movements and oxygen levels while the patient sleeps. This allows staff to detect the exact nature of the child’s condition so they can prescribe the best possible treatment for them. The system gives the child the best chance at complete recovery, and without this equipment many children may live with an undiagnosed sleep disorder, leading to long term health repercussions.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, young patients like Alex, can now sleep easier.

.......

“I feel very grateful to the sleep study unit, without them, their help and the facility, I would still be second guessing myself as a parent as to whether or not Alex’s sleep disturbances were something that I should manage better as a parent,” Alex’s mother Michelle said.

In July 2013 our new clinical services building officially opened its doors to patients. Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation, through our Capital Appeal, raised $15 million towards the $27.7 million cost of the build, thanks to the generosity and dedication of our donors.

HOW YOUR SUPPORT HELPED- THE AINSWORTH BUILDING .......

The south west wing of the Hospital is officially named the Ainsworth Building, thanks to the enormous generosity of one particular donor, Mr Len Ainsworth, who pledged $5M to help us achieve our new facility. This is the single largest donation ever received by the Foundation.

A further $4M was contributed by the Saunders family for the naming rights to the new Child & Adolescent Mental Health Unit, housed in the building.

The five-storey building is home to a new Respiratory Department, Child Protection Unit, Family Centre, 28-bed Short Stay Surgical Unit and a Comprehensive Rehabilitation Unit. This wonderful new facility allows the Hospital to continue to provide world-class healthcare to our young patients.

Other major donors we would like to thank include Cherish The Children Foundation, Coogee

Bay Hotel, Sargents Pies Charitable Foundation, Westfield and The Lewis Foundation.

Through generous contributions from the community, and other fundraising activities, the Foundation was able to reach the $15 million target.

All of our donors who contributed more than $500 will be recognised in the new building.

The Foundation is extremely proud of our involvement in the development of this amazing new addition to the Hospital. The impact on our patients and their families has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are incredibly grateful for the support we received in reaching this remarkable achievement. It will truly make a positive difference to the lives of our young patients.

NED’S STORY .......11 YEARS OLD SURGERY PATIENT .......Ned was in Sydney with his family on holidays from South Australia when he started getting pains in his stomach. Worried, his parents took him to hospital where it was discovered he had appendicitis. He was immediately transferred to Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick and underwent emergency surgery for ruptured appendicitis. He was one of the first patients in the new Ainsworth Building’s short-stay surgical unit.

Due to the severity of his condition, Ned spent the next nine days in the Hospital, receiving treatment for infections in his abdomen. He was then able to fly home with his family and receive follow-up care closer to home.

A few months down the track, he Is back doing what he loves, playing basketball, football, swimming and athletics. While full recovery will take a few months, his mum Kate said he was almost back to being himself.

“It was so lovely being in the new ward, especially as we were so far from home, all of the staff were so wonderful to us,” she said.

Our Hall of Champions are those valued partners who have contributed more than $1M during their partnership with the Foundation, ensuring world-class healthcare for our children.

HALL OF CHAMPIONS .......

There are many ways to support Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation, and one such way is to leave a gift to the Hospital in your Will. The Foundation is extremely fortunate to have a number of supporters who have generously decided to leave such a donation. These people are known as Sunshine Guardians. We are grateful for their commitment to the future of paediatric health.

Our first Sunshine Guardian was Mr Jack Frankham who sadly passed away early 2013 at the age of 92.

Mr Frankham was inspired to help the Hospital after his nephew was treated here many years ago. In his own words, he “decided to make a bequest to Sydney Children’s Hospital to make a positive difference in the lives of sick and injured children.” Mr Frankham’s generous gift will help fund research into improving treatments for children, training the specialists of the future through our Fellowship Program, and purchasing new equipment so our Hospital can provide the best possible care for our young patients.

Our gratitude and condolences to Mr Frankham’s family. He truly has made a long-lasting and positive difference to the lives of critically ill and injured children.

OUR FINANCES

2012-13 has been an impressive year for the Foundation, highlighted by outstanding financial performances right across the board, mainly due to a stellar team effort together with resurgence in the investment markets.

COMMENTARY ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE .......

In summary, total income of $22.428M exceeded the prior year result by $6.967M and expenses were contained to $4.764M compared to the prior year of $4.311M.

Overall, the Foundation achieved a net operational surplus of $17.665M compared to the prior year of $11.150M, an increase of $6.515M which is an exceptional result.

The net surplus also exceeded the Foundation’s budget by $3.156M further underlining this extraordinary result.

Funding the Hospital over $6.3M for ongoing needs

Providing over $13M as the major supporter for The Ainsworth Building (Clinical Services Building) completed in 2013

Including the operations & management of Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia for the first time, funding five major children’s hospitals throughout Australia with amounts totalling almost $0.9M

Reviewing our investment status and moving to a shared portfolio management position to mitigate any possible risks

In our opinion, the information reported in the abridged financial statements is consistent with the full annual financial statements from which it is derived and upon which we have expressed our audit opinion. For a better understanding of the scope of our audit, this report should be read in conjunction with our audit report on the full annual financial statements. INDEPENDENT AUDITORS REPORT .......

REPORT ON THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

We have audited the abridged financial statements, comprising the statement of financial position as at 30 June 2013, the statement of surplus and deficit and other comprehensive income, statement of cash flows for the year then ended, and related notes, derived from the audited financial statements of Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation for the financial year ended 30 June 2013. The abridged financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by the Australian Accounting Standards and accordingly, reading the abridged financial statements is not a substitute for reading the audited financial statements.

TRUSTEES’ RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

The trustees of the Foundation are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the abridged financial statements in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards (including the Australian Accounting Interpretations) and the trust deed and for such internal control as the trustees determine is necessary to enable the preparation of the abridged financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

AUDITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY

Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the abridged financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the abridged financial statements are free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the abridged financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the abridged financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the Foundation’s preparation and fair presentation of the abridged financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Foundation’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the directors, as well as evaluating the Dated this 17th day of September 2013 Sydney
