Letter from Terry Ascott SAT‑7 CEO

2013 was our fourth consecutive financial year working with the same flat budget! During these four years many new initiatives have been embraced, including the two new Arabic channels on Nilesat, the inclusion into the organizational structure of SAT‑7 TÜRK, and a raft of new, innovative programming. We have also invested in new facilities for PARS in London – from which we now broadcast live programs into Iran every week‑night. It was therefore not surprising that we started 2013 with no financial reserves. This, coupled with the March 2013 banking crisis in Cyprus, almost brought the work of SAT‑7 to a standstill. But we praise God, and sincerely thank our valued Partners and supporters, for the fact that SAT‑7’s cash‑flow was positive throughout the year and we even began 2014 with the full, SAT‑7 Board‑mandated working capital in hand!

Today, SAT‑7 is broadcasting to a regular audience conservatively estimated at 15 million; with over 1,000 hours of programming each week across six different television channels; operating from eleven legal

5

entities in nine different countries with a worldwide staff of about 170, coming from 22 different nations. The responses to programs come in many different ways – and millions are reached through new social media networks.

So, this brief Annual Report on the work of SAT‑7 in 2013 covers only the highlights! There is so much more that can and perhaps should be said! Nevertheless, we hope it will encourage you as you read it, and it is offered in symbolic thanks to each and every one of our supporters – those who have prayed for us, helped through financial gifts or donated time, helped to run the counseling centers, provided programming or helped with counsel, advice or training. We are all SAT‑7!

There has been an enormous increase in the number of SAT-7 programs being watched on the Internet. For example, there was a thousand-fold rise in YouTube views of the SAT-7 ARABIC and SAT-7 KIDS channels between January 2010 (when programs were watched just 643 times) and December 2013 (when they were viewed 636,558 times). SAT-7 is no longer simply a satellite TV organization, but has become a multi-media broadcaster with a global reach.

Social media represent an increasingly important method of interaction with SAT‑7 viewers. For example, the SAT‑7 ARABIC channel page has been ‘liked’ on Facebook by 125,000 people who now receive regular updates from the channel as a result. The Facebook 'reach' of SAT‑7 ARABIC and SAT‑7 KIDS is now more than 9 million people (see chart on page 13).

The Middle East and North Africa are seeing massive growth in the use of smartphones and other mobile devices like iPads being used to access the Internet. SAT‑7 has launched apps for both Apple iOS and Android devices so that Middle Eastern viewers (and anyone in the world) can watch SAT‑7 programs while on the move. This means that audience potential is increasing all the time.

SAT-7 NORTH AMERICAIn November 2013 SAT‑7 NORTH AMERICA was launched with a live program from Lebanon, hosted by Rita Elmounayer, the Executive Director of SAT‑7’s Arabic channels. SAT‑7 is now available to a potential audience of five million Arabic speakers living in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

SAT‑7 NORTH AMERICA’s slogan is “A Voice from Home.” Online streaming of SAT‑7 programs has been available for some time – but Arabic speakers in North America can now see the network’s most popular shows on a living room TV set and on a schedule that better suits their time zones.

Viewers and church leaders across North America have welcomed this experimental one‑year transmission, hoping that it will continue. A California resident says, “There is no doubt that any Christian believer longs for the message of Christ to reach the whole world. In our minds, that is always tied to SAT‑7 because it was the first channel to present this message in the Arabic language to the Arab World.”

Look for SAT‑7 NORTH AMERICA on Galaxy 19 at 97º West (Frequency 11.867 GHz Vertical, Symbol Rate 22000, FEC ¾). To find out more about SAT‑7 NORTH AMERICA, or to make a donation supporting this new channel, please visit www.sat7northamerica.org

Channel Updates

The year brought both challenges and encouragements for the SAT-7 ARABIC studios in Egypt and Lebanon.

Syrian Bishops kidnappedIn April 2013, near Syria’s border with Turkey, insurgents kidnapped SAT‑7 International Council Member Mar Gregorios Ibrahim and his colleague Metropolitan Paul Yazigi. Both men are still missing. SAT‑7 ARABIC has been broadcasting appeals to encourage viewers to pray for the Bishops and their families.

Political upheaval in EgyptAt the end of June mass protests and an army intervention led to the overthrow of President Morsi. In reaction, six weeks later government buildings and more than 80 churches and Christian institutes were attacked by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and many were burned to the ground. SAT‑7 programs like Bridges have addressed Egyptians’ hopes, fears and grievances. One episode featured the members of a church singing praise and proclaiming

forgiveness in their burned‑out building. The Christ‑like non‑violent reaction by Christians in Egypt made a significant impression on the country's moderate Muslim population.

Human Rights Journalism AwardIn July the Lebanese Center for Human Rights presented SAT‑7 Special Projects Manager Juliana Sfeir with the Human Rights Journalism Award. This was in recognition of two SAT‑7 campaigns, one promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities, and the other promoting the empowerment of female heads of households.

“When I was 15 I started watching SAT-7 programs, especially As-Sanabel. Please pray for me, for I am now a believer.”

Program newsOne Thing mega-conferenceFrom 26–28 September over 10,000 people gathered to worship at the One Thing conference in the desert town of Wadi El Natroun, Egypt. Aired live on SAT‑7, One Thing was eagerly anticipated by Christians across Egypt. The high‑energy conference acted as a refreshing ‘retreat’.

Count It RightLater, in the same location along the desert highway between Cairo and Alexandria over 15,000 Egyptians gathered for the Count It Right sports festival in November. Extreme sports athletes, talented worship teams and renowned preachers kept the audience on the edge of their seats as they shared the Gospel.

Seeking wise counselProduced by SAT‑7’s award‑winning producer Juliana Sfeir, Dear Jessy is hosted by Jessy Tohme and brings Biblical counseling for viewers.

Filming in IraqA SAT‑7 crew went to great personal risk when they filmed in

Baghdad. Egyptian producer John Adly and his team captured footage of local street life, Christians sharing their stories, and a worship service in Baghdad. Their goal was to show how Iraqi Christians live, work and witness in such a dangerous environment.

Christmas in SyriaOn 25 December SAT‑7 broadcast a Christmas service from the Christian Unity Church in Damascus. Despite the civil unrest in their country, Christians in the Syrian capital wanted to show the world that they are still there, and still serving their Lord.

One Thing Kids FestivalIn a country shaken by unrest, 1,400 pre‑teens gathered to worship at the One Thing Kids Festival in the Egyptian desert. They asked God to change them so they could be salt and light for Jesus in their communities. SAT‑7 aired the event live from 16 to 18 July.

With the end of Turkish programming on SAT-7 PARS, the channel became a 24/7 Persian-language service in September 2013, utilizing the additional air-time for more creative programs for both children and adults. SAT-7 PARS children’s programs also went live for the first time.

Program newsWhat’s Up?A live variety show called What’s Up? is tapping into the energy of Farsi‑speaking youth. Brother and sister co‑hosts Hovan and Anita Hovsepian chat live with viewers via Skype, SMS texting and phone calls. They invite viewers to vote on the best music videos, movies, poems and Bible stories of the week.

Kids’ show goes liveInternational Children’s Day on 20 November was an ideal occasion for the first live broadcast of the popular children’s program Carousel. Host Parastoo was thrilled to receive phone calls from long‑time fans in Iran – 200 calls in the first five minutes.

Bringing smiles to childrenSmile is the newest live kids’ program to join the channel. Smile aired its first episode live on 29 November with the topic You are special to Jesus. Almost 300 children and parents called the studio during the hour‑long show.

Green FieldGreen Field is a humorous musical puppet show with singing and dancing, designed for children aged between 8 and 13. Persian proverbs and literature are used and linked to the Bible to captivate children and their parents.

Living TruthMost Iranian adults have been taught that Jesus is only a prophet and that humans corrupted Scripture. In a new program entitled Living Truth, husband and wife co‑hosts Peyman and Javaher correct these teachings by answering fundamental questions about faith.

“A friend gave me a Bible, and I bought a satellite dish to watch your programs. I gave my heart to Jesus. Pray for me to learn more about Christianity.”

The full equipping of the studio in 2013 enabled SAT-7 TÜRK to roll out many new programs during the year. It is hoped that SAT-7 TÜRK will begin live broadcasts in early 2014. SAT-7 TÜRK is currently a 24/7 Internet channel, and in the process of applying to the Turkish government to broadcast via satellite on TURKSAT.

Program newsMinding a godly marriageMy Life Companion emphasizes the idea that marriage is a life‑long commitment and uses Scripture as a model to resolve relational conflicts. Each week host Joshua Ozcelik meets a married couple in the studio. A guiding Scripture for the program is Hebrews 13:4, “Marriage should be honored by all…”

Dynamic duoMother and daughter Alisa and Anna co‑host an innovative new program for women called The

Art of Living. Anna and her mother hope “to introduce Jesus to people in a way they understand.” The show covers various topics, from how we should treat our bodies to lying and domestic violence.

Bringing Christmas celebrations to the streetAs crowds bustled through Istanbul’s shopping district in December, they were serenaded by Turkish Christmas carolers. The carolers formed a parade, carrying banners and signs proclaiming the birth of Christ. SAT‑7 TÜRK broadcast the parade and a Christmas service at a local church.

“I saw love in the hearts of people who belong to Christ. I’ve received God’s love now and want to tell others about it. Pray for me.”

Studio Renovations & ConstructionBeirut, LebanonThe construction of a wonderful new studio complex is moving forward on schedule. The concrete structure is finished, as is most of the plastering, plumbing, electrical, lighting and tiling work. Still to be finalised are air conditioning, windows, doors, elevators, the external facade and painting. All works should be completed by August or September 2014, and an official opening is planned for November. Further work is still required on the access road and electric power for the complex, and investment is also needed in back‑up generators, alarms, security and IT equipment, and furniture.

“I’m a new believer and found a church, but they are not permitted to let a Farsi speaker like me into their church. I give thanks that your programs can teach me.”

Istanbul, TurkeyThe main SAT‑7 TÜRK studio in Istanbul is now equipped with all the basics as a result of purchases in 2013. “Finally we will be able to start shooting live shows and other programs,” says SAT‑7 TÜRK Executive Director Melih Ekener. “We have relied on churches and other spaces to produce many of our programs. However, using our new multi‑purpose sets and different types of lighting we are beginning with the production of many new regular programs, some of which will develop into live shows.” There are also plans to generate some income by renting out any excess studio capacity.

Cairo, EgyptThe audio studio in Cairo is going to be expanded. A new security camera system has been installed at the Cairo studios, together with security fencing. Equipment has been ordered for a new outside broadcast van, and designs for the van have been presented to the factory which will customize the vehicle. The Cairo studios also need to buy a generator in order to deal with regular power cuts.

Limassol, CyprusThe Limassol studio has added two new sets for new SAT‑7 PARS children’s programs. A moveable rainbow‑themed set has been produced for the live program Smile, and a jungle set was produced for the Green Field puppet show. The set for the Dandelion program was renovated. Several volunteers from local churches are helping the team in the Limassol studio, together with interns from Germany.

London, UKThe major renovation of the SAT‑7 PARS UK studio was completed in March 2013, allowing the resumption of live programs from London – which are now broadcast every week night. There are now plans to add further equipment to the ground floor studio space by the middle of 2014, and to rent out the studio in order to help generate needed income for the PARS channel. A new Studio Co‑ordinator has been recruited for the SAT‑7 PARS London team.

Projected income $14,500,000

2013 was a very encouraging year financially. Despite a very difficult start to the period, God provided SAT-7 with a record income of almost $15.4 million, while expenses (including investments in fixed assets) were carefully kept within budget at $14.5 million.

Particular credit is due to SAT‑7’s support offices in the USA, UK and Europe, with each one performing very well in the area of fundraising during 2013.

These achievements were all the more important to SAT‑7 when one takes into account the banking crisis in Cyprus (the location of the SAT‑7 International Office) and the subsequent difficulties for SAT‑7 to manage its international cash flow.
