UOW Indonesian Students Association Annual Report: Spring 2017 – Spring 2018
Executive Summary
Indonesian Students Association
“Home of Indonesian Students”
UOW Indonesian Students Association (in short “ISA”, also known as 'Perhimpunan Pelajar
Indonesia di Australia ranting University of Wollongong - or PPIA UOW) is a forum for Indonesian
students studying at UOW. In Australia, ISA Wollongong is one of the satellites of Indonesian
Students Association of Australia (PPIA Pusat) and affiliated with PPIA NSW Branch.
ISA aims as a home for Indonesian Students to gather and to share as a community, as well as to
introduce Indonesia and its culture to others. ISA organizes various useful, fun and informative
activities throughout the year. Among all those activities are Balinese Dance Class, Saman Dance
Class, Bahasa Indonesia Conversation Class (part of the UOW Language Exchange), Academic
Discussions (OBRAS), Informal Gatherings, Sports, and participating on local events in Illawarra. ISA

is also intended to provide relevant information for its members during their pre or first arrival in
Wollongong as well invite them to join its constructive activities. Moreover, ISA also attempts to
widespread relevant information about Indonesia to the people living in Wollongong.

What we have done over the last year
Over the past year, ISA has held social events that were not only presented for Indonesia students
but also Indonesian residents who live at Wollongong and the city nearby. Celebrating
Indepndence Day and conducting forum for immigration issue were two main events that
contribute to the wider population of Indonesian who stay and live in Wollongong.
As what has been started last year by previous executives, we have continued cultural performance
of Indonesia which is Saman Dance. Moreover, we have added traditional costume of Indonesia to
ISA’s property to be used in any cultural occasion.

Highlight of what’s new during the past year
Immigration Information
Early of 2018, ISA cooperated with Indonesian Consulate General in Australia, and Department of
Immigration for students and Indonesian residents in Australia to consult and discuss about their
immigration issue. This is also include meet and greet with new head of Indonesian Consulate
which is based in Canberra, Australia.
Traditional Saman Dance
About the dance: Saman (translated as the dance of thousand hands) is a dance from Gayo, Aceh
province, Indonesia. The dance is characterised by its fast-paced rhythm and natural harmony
between dancers. On 2011, UNESCO officially recognised Aceh's traditional Saman dance as a
Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Discussion Forum
During the period of 2017-2018, there are two discussion forum thas has been held. The first one
was named Indonesian Youth Pledge presenting keynote speaker from the experts of ISA-Gong.
The second discussion forum was hosted by ISA presenting prior president of ISA.
Website, Social Media and Contact
ISA created brand a new website within the context that every member can submit their live story
in Australia, academic journey, or share their experience that are totally different from Indonesia.
There are currently 17 stories from the members. ISA also increased the used social media function
to spread the news and announcement.

Member Database and Its Contact
ISA sometimes becomes a focal point to reach Indonesian student, whether the request comes
from the Indonesian Embassy, the Consulate General, or their parent. Therefore, ISA is tidying up
the member database and contact. The database is important not only to know member’s profile,
but also it can be used to if there is something emergency. Therefore, ISA added emergency
contact that can be contacted in Indonesia or Australia.

Highlight of the Activities
Stimulating Discussion
During the periode of 2017-2018, ISA has held several meeting and discussions talking about many
aspect of student life in particular, and social life, in general.

2. Maritime and Educational Forum
Cultural Performance
ISA has performed traditional dance of Indonesia (Saman Dance) since last year and continually got
invitation to perform at events hosted by the University of Wollongong and local community. This
year, SAman dance was presented again during Open day at UOW, August 11th, 2018.

Activity 1
Title : Indonesian Independence Day
Date & time : August 17th, 2018
Place : McKinnon Lawn UOW
Description :
At the end of the winter season, in the middle of August, an event was held to celebrate
one of the most memorable day for Indonesian. 17th August was a memorial day for all
Indonesian because it was the day when Indonesia gets its freedom as an independent
country and it is then known as Indonesian independence day. it is very likely to celebrate
this day with playing Indonesian traditional games.
Even though, we are miles away from Indonesia, the spirit of celebrating the independence
day was still embraced. There were so many people come to our event to celebrate. They
were not only students who study at UOW but also Indonesian residents living in
Wollongong.

In this day, we played some traditional games, held a short formal ceremony of
independence day, and of course, enjoying Indonesian dishes.

Title : Casual Club Event
Date & time : September 13th 2017
Place : UOW Duck Pond
Description :
University of Wollongong always have special occasion every month. This event was just a casual
event happening at uni to promote a club. We had a stal in this day to promote ISA to the students
and provided some Indonesian snacks to the students.

Activity 3
Title : Indonesian Youth Pledge
Date & time : October 28th 2017
Place : UOW McKinnon Building, 67.104
Description :
The first discussion forum for the new session was here! Running a theme around maritime and
language issue, this event was a lit. It was always the first agenda for ISA to provide stimulating
talks with the other fellow Indonesian students as it is a platform for us to share and discuss any
aspect of life.
We had several speakers who have great expertise on the theme brought in the forum.

Activity 4
Title : ISA Farewell Party
Date & time : November 17th 2017
Place : UOW Duck Pond
Description :
At the end of every session, there are some students who have finished their study at UOW
and ready to go back to their life in the home country Indonesia. The bound that has been
created during the time in Australia makes it hard to have a farewell. Yet, to cheer people
up, a party would make sadness becomes joyful. At the end of each session at uni, ISA
annually held a farewell party to cheer friends and family who would go back home and
congratulate them to finish their study.
The party includes BBQ party, discussion, games, and gifts.

Title : Club’s Day
Date & time : February 20th 2018
Place : UOW Bld. 11
Description :
This time, ISA back to introduce our club to new students at UOW. We are promoting our
traditional culture which include costumes and food. We cooked traditional food from
Sumatra Barat which was ever awarded as number 1 food in the world named Rendang.

Title : Isa New Member Welcoming Party
Date & time : February 23rd 2018
Place : UOW Duck Pond Lawn/Building 11 CSE Room
Description :
If we let people go back home joyfully at the end of uni session, we also have to welcome
those who have come to Wollongong heartedly as part of ISA. This autumn, there are
several Indonesians who came to study at UOW. May you have wonderful life at
Wollongong. Let’s have some BBQ party to start!

Title : Meet and Greet with prior president of ISA
Date & time : April 13th 2018
Place : UOW Duck Pond
Description :
Sharing is always good. We had a visitor from prior president of ISA. During his visit to
Wollongong, he had shared so many wonderful experiences as part of ISA and UOW’s
student in the past year. Having stimulating discussion has always delivered positive
message to the other students to do better.

Activity 8
Title : Immigration and Indonesian Consulate General
Date & time : May 12th 2018
Place : McKinnon Building UOW
Description :
Called out all the Indonesians living in Wollongong and nearby, on one fine day at 12th
May, 2018, PPIA held a big event cooperated with Department of Immigration and
Indonesian Consulate General to help people with their immigrant issue. The staffs from
the immigration office would help the students and the Indonesian residents with their visa
and passport. They could actually extend and renew their immigration status at that day.
More of the event, the new head of Indonesian Consulate that based in Canberra, Australia
was coming to the event to share the strategic visions of Indonesian Consulate General so
all Indonesians living in Australia would have shared understanding about it.
The another bright side of the event, there were Bakso and Rendang provided for the
guests to break homesickness. These two popular Indonesian dishes completed the day.

Activity 9
Title : Annual Congress of Indonesian Student in Australia
Date & time : June 23rd 2018
Place : Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Description :
Every year, Indonesian Student Association throughout Australia held a big event to
discharge the executives and replace it with the new ones. This was yielded to refresh the
community and give chance for all the students in every city of Australia to feel the heaps
of becoming the executives of the biggest Indonesian students association in the world.
Every branches of ISA throughout the university in Australia would send delegation or
representative to attend the event. Then, the delegations would represent their community
to be a part of the election.
This time, our friend from ISA UOW was elected as the new president of Indonesia Student
Association Australia. Massive shout out to Hakam Junus! Congratulation.
May it be a new beginning for ISA UOW to do better in the future.

Activity 10
Title : Second Farewell Party
Date & time : July 7th, 2018
Place : Botanical Garden Wollongong
Description :
First week of July, another farewell party for our lovely fellow Indonesian students was held. This
time, ISA organised the event together with Indonesian Muslim Association of Wollongong. This
was attended by approximately 50 people. Those included family who has cute and beautiful
children.
As usual, Indonesian dishes would dominate the event. There were so many typical Indonesian
cuisines presented by the mothers who are very good in cooking Indonesian traditional dishes.
Within all the diversity of tribes in Indonesia, the diverse of dishes come along. Luckily, our beloved
Indonesian mothers could make them for us and provide them in the event. LUCK!
There were also some short speeches from our friends who have done their study and would go
back home shortly. This was a heartbreaking moment because in fact we had to lose other friends
again. However, the farewell party was fun and we all enjoyed it.

Activity 11
Title : Costume Parade at Welcoming Party UOW
Date & time : August 8th, 2018
Place : UOW Uni Hall
Description :
One of our vision as Indonesian student is to promote and introduce our uniques and diverse
culture in Australia. We would like to participate to any occasion which can expose our culture.
Indonesia has annually attended welcoming party to be a part of costume parade to show people
our traditional costume from Indonesia.
This year, we proudly presented our national costume, Batik and traditional costume from
Banjarmasin and NTT.
Such a lovely evening to introduce our lovely costume to the audiences.

Title : ISA Saman Dance Performance
Date & time : August 11th 2018
Place : UOW Duck Pond
Description :
One of ISA’s pride that can continuously presented at Wollongong is our unique traditional dance
from Sumatra named Saman Dance. This dance which was known with its clapping and unified
movement was successfully catched people attention which is why we continuously received
invitation to perform. This year, we got a chance to perform at Open Day UOW to introduce our
traditional dance to the local people.
