MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Making a Difference at Home, in Our Communities, and Across the Nation F ISCAL YEAR 2006 (July 2005–June 2006) was a year of exciting new activities and organizational growth at the American Horticultural Society (AHS) as we worked hard to expand our reach, strengthen our programs and services, and build a solid foundation for the future. Since its inception in 1922, the AHS has been dedicated to making a difference in peo- ple’s lives through the art and science of horticulture. In today’s technology-rich and rapid- ly changing world, that mission is more relevant than ever. Plants and gardens not only offer a vital connection to the earth, they have such a positive impact on the quality of our lives and the environments we live in. And, for so many of us, gardening provides a life- time of enjoyment, relaxation, and wonder-filled discoveries. For these reasons and more, I find it so gratifying to be involved in an organization that is about creating, encouraging, and recognizing successful gardeners. Fostering opportu- nities for young people to get involved with plants and gardens, opening the eyes of more Americans to the many benefits of gardening, making gardening exciting and fun—it’s all important work that makes a difference in our world in so many ways. Of course, we cannot do it alone. We are so appreciative of the contributions, involve- ment, and dedication of our members, donors, volunteers, and partner organizations. Thanks to your support, our AHS national community of gardeners continues to grow and strengthen. Helping Americans enjoy the rewards of gardens and gardeningFor more than 80 years, the American Horticultural So-ciety has helped home gardeners and professional hor-ticulturists increase their knowledge, feed their passionfor gardening, and embrace responsible stewardship ofthe earth. AHS membership provides access to the So-ciety’s rich horticultural resources, including a host ofopportunities for hands-in-the-soil gardeners, armchairdreamers, and hearty travelers alike to fully experiencethe joys of gardens and gardening.

From the wealth of informative stories in The Amer-ican Gardener magazine to the network of gardens andarboreta offering free admission through the Society’sReciprocal Admissions Program (RAP), the opportu-nity to participate in the Society’s annual Seed Ex-change Program, and access to the members-onlysection of the AHS website, members have a wealth ofresources at their fingertips.

AHS members also benefit from discounts on AHSeducational programs and at flower and garden showsacross the nation. Through all of these resources, AHSmembers discover the many facets of American horti-culture, while gaining inspiration and new knowledge.

Connecting to tomorrow’s gardenersSince the first National Children & Youth GardenSymposium in 1993, the American Horticultural So-ciety has been a leader in promoting and supportingthe inclusion of gardens in children’s lives. Not onlyare plants and gardens important to play, learning, and quality of life, but research shows that outdoorexperiences early in life help shape positive environ-mental attitudes and values that last a lifetime. TheAHS strives to provide educators, garden designers, community leaders, and other children’s gardeningadvocates with the practical skills and inspiration theyneed to foster the next generation of gardeners andhorticulture leaders.

The 13th annual National Children & Youth Gar-den Symposium hosted by the Atlanta Botanical Gar-den and Wonderland Gardens in Atlanta, Georgia, gathered 202 attendees from 31 states and one foreigncountry to share inspiring stories and successful mod-els for children and youth gardening programs acrossthe nation.

The three-day symposium featured keynote speak-ers Marcia Eames-Sheavly, Tim O’Keefe, and SharonLovejoy, who challenged attendees to discover how gar-dening can provide what children and youth reallyneed, how educators can foster authentic inquiry learn-ing, and how to introduce children to science and na-ture through gardening.

The “Growing Good Kids—Excellence in Chil-dren’s Literature Awards,” presented in partnershipwith the Junior Master Gardener program, madetheir debut in Atlanta during the symposium. Theawards celebrate children’s books that teach mean-ingful lessons about gardening and earth steward-ship. In the inaugural year, 40 books were honoredin a one-time “Classics” category. Young peoplefrom Atlanta area Junior Master Gardener programsunveiled the award winners by reading excepts fromall 40 books.

During the past year, the AHS has also partneredwith Hollin Meadows, an elementary school near theSociety’s headquarters to establish The Growing Con-nection™ project at theschool. AHS Horti-culturist Peggy Bow-ers also designed ameadow and othergardens on the schoolgrounds. Through apartnership betweenthe AHS and theFood and AgricultureOrganization of theUnited Nations, TheGrowing Connectionengages young peoplein the science of grow-ing nutritious food and offers the opportunity for ex-periential learning while sharing culture with peersaround the world. The Growing Connection Demon-stration Garden at River Farm, along with the schoolgardens at Hollin Meadows, have attracted interest-ed groups from across the country for tours.

Sharing the art and science ofhorticultureThrough its educational programs, the AmericanHorticultural Society provides a variety of opportu-nities for members to explore the world of gardeningand to pursue their passion for plants. Ranging fromnational symposia to intimate garden tours, the Soci-ety’s educational programs offer one-of-a-kind expe-riences that appeal to a diverse audience of gardeners, horticulturists, and educators.

A new AHS Garden School “Gardening with Na-tive Plants,” was presented to a sold out audience ofnative plant enthusiasts at River Farm in April. Sixty-three attendees from 10 states gathered to hear froma remarkable lineup of native plant experts that in-

cluded garden writer Carole Ottesen, plants-man and nursery owner Kurt Bluemel, landscape architect Darrel Morrison, horti-culturist and author Richard Bir, RickLewandowski of the Mt. Cuba Center, andAHS Horticulturist Peggy Bowers.

The AHS Garden Schools also went onthe road for the first time, with “The Art &Science of Color in the Garden” traveling toFranklin Park Conservatory in Columbus,Ohio, in the spring. Forty-one attendees from12 states learned about the intricacies of colorin the garden. Presenters included HeatherWill-Browne of Walt Disney World Resorts,Jim Nau of Ball Horticultural Company,Michael DeHart of the J. Paul Getty Trust,

In addition to the AHS Garden Schools, the AHStook the Green Garage® on the road as an exhibit atthe Philadelphia Flower Show. The Green Garage pro-gram is aimed at helping American gardeners recog-nize and seize opportunities to make environmentallyconscious decisions by showcasing the tools, equip-ment, supplies, and techniques that support sustain-able gardening. The Green Garage exhibit was wellreceived in Philadelphia, winning the Best in ShowAward for educational exhibits by non-academic or-ganizations, as well as the Special Achievement Awardfrom the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania.

One of the Society’s most important educationalprograms, the AHS internship program, offers hands-on, practical experience for college students and careerchangers. In 2005–2006, 10 interns spent a summer ora semester working with AHS horticulture, education, and publication staff members to expand their expe-

riences and furtherexplore their careeroptions. In additionto participating infield trips, writingarticles, and doing avariety of intern pro-jects, three of the in-terns traveled toAtlanta, Georgia, toassist with the Na-tional Children &Youth Garden Sym-posium.

For the discern-ing gardener who

wishes to explore the roots of American horticultureand garden design, the Society’s Travel Study Program, offered in partnership with the Leonard Haertter Trav-el Company, offers trips to an array of unique garden-ing locales. In 2005–2006, nine trips were offered, including the Summer Coastal Gardens of NewZealand, the Gardens of the Veneto, the Gardens ofChile, and Argentina and the Wilderness of Patagonia, and the Gardens and Monuments of Sicily.

The Society also supports educational opportunitiesby co-sponsoring many programs across the nation, in-cluding the Colonial Williamsburg Garden Sympo-sium, the Magic of Landscapes Symposium, and theAmerica in Bloom Symposium and Awards Program.

Providing useful and authoritative informationWith more than 100 books devoted to the world ofornamental plants, an award-winning magazine The

American Gardener, a groundbreaking horticulturalmap, and countless other publications, the AHS is aleading source of useful and authoritative gardeninginformation.

In 2005 and 2006, Gardens Across America: TheAmerican Horticultural Society’s Guide to AmericanPublic Gardens and Arboreta and Gardens AcrossAmerica: West of the Mississippi, compiled by John J.Russell and Thomas S. Showcasing and demonstratingthe best of American horticultureSince 1973, River Farm has been the national head-quarters of the American Horticultural Society.Renowned for its spectacular vistas of lawns and mead-ows stretching down to the Potomac River, the proper-ty features naturalistic and formal gardens that offeryear-round delight to visitors of all ages. Once ownedby George Washington, the property is now a showcaseof horticultural innovation as well as history.

With the tremendous efforts of the Society’s volun-teers, Corporate Partners, and many other friends,River Farm continues to grow into a gathering place forAmerican gardeners and a celebration of American hor-ticulture. Several events took place at River Farm in2005 with these goals in mind. The Friends of RiverFarm (FORF) Plant Sale in April was a gigantic successdrawing 2,000 visitors in search of the perfect plants fortheir gardens over the course of the two-day sale. Laterin the spring, 350 visitors attended the FORF FamilyDay Picnic, celebrating the coming of spring, while en-gaging children in nature-related activities.

In September, the AHS partnered with the Gar-den Centers of America, as one of six host sites for anew industry event to unveil new plants for the 2006growing season, along with time tested garden fa-vorites. Centerton Nursery, Cherry Lake Tree Farm,Goldsmith Seeds, Proven Winners, and SaundersBrothers Nursery drew green industry professionalsfrom across the nation to River Farm for the debut of

what will be an annual event. The weeklong show-case ended in a celebratory atmosphere with the 2005AHS Gala at River Farm.

The gardens and landscape of River Farm contin-ue to blossom. With the help of AHS volunteers andCorporate Partner Kurt Bluemel, Inc., the thirdphase of the André Bluemel Meadow restoration pro-ject was completed in May 2006. More than 31,000plugs of grasses and herbaceous perennials were plant-ed, representing 30 different species.

The Growing Connection Demonstration Gardenunderwent a redesign, making the garden easier tonavigate for visitors, and for the staff and volunteerswho collect the abundant harvests, which were do-nated to a local food bank.

The Children’s Garden also received noteworthyattention. With the help of local Girl Scouts Katie Sta-ples and Milica Wren, the Children’s Garden Bat Caveand Little House on the Praire Gardens were renovat-ed and rejuvenated. River Farm’s youngest visitorshave been enjoying the enhancements.

Throughout the year, the future of River Farm asthe National Center for American Horticulture start-ed coming into focus. Initial efforts to take the RiverFarm Master Plan, adopted in 2004 by the AHS’sBoard of Directors, to the next step are underway.

Melody Gray, a Longwood Graduate Fellow andformer AHS intern selected the Master Plan’s centralaxis, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Walk, as the focus of herMaster’s degree thesis research. The scope of Melody’sresearch centers on Liberty Hyde Bailey’s contribu-tions to American horticulture and initial concept de-signs for the Walk. In December 2005, the AmericanHorticultural Society received a grant from the Stan-ley Smith Horticultural Trust in support of the Lib-erty Hyde Bailey Walk, providing funds to takeMelody Gray’s work to the next level by commission-ing schematic designs for the walk.
