The 2016.17 season was one of beginnings and endings.

Edo de Waart’s tenure, one of the most important in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s history, came to a triumphant conclusion in May with a spectacular performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. Edo’s farewell season was one of incredible guest artists and stunning performances, including The Marriage of Figaro, the third and final in our Mozart/da Ponte opera series. After 8 years under Edo’s leadership, the orchestra is a fine-tuned machine that performs at a high level of flexibility, artistry, and virtuosity. His influence on our orchestra will be felt for decades to come. Fortunately, Edo will continue to be a part of our organization as music director laureate.

During the 2016.17 season, the orchestra got to know several new conductors who we saw on the podium as part of the music director search. Our search continues during the 2017.18 season, and we welcome feedback on all of the conductors you see this season.

For the first time, the orchestra and chorus performed in Lambeau Field, and we’ve expanded our concert offerings outside of the Marcus Center to appeal to new audiences of all ages. Our movie series expanded with Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II, Pokémon, Fantasia, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. We also played a David Bowie concert, and the MSO returned to Ravinia for only the second time in its history to perform La La Land — film with orchestra.

We reached out to audiences in other parts of Milwaukee with our three-concert Basilica series and Symphony in the Neighborhood, a week-long residency program which took place in Riverwest and Harambee. The orchestra also performed three concerts in unexpected venues last season with Secret Symphony. Venues included Flux Design, Milwaukee Central Library, and Milwaukee Public Museum. Patrons were able hear the orchestra in an intimate setting, and they enjoyed food, drinks, and activities from community partners.

Continuing with our mantra of “Bring people closer to the music,” our Symphony Soirée, again with Edo de Waart, featured some of our closest friends sitting on stage with us at the Marcus Center for an evening of Strauss and our orchestra.

Last season, our education programs reached more than 40,000 students through Concerts for Schools, the Arts in Community Education (ACE) program, and the Joan Steele Stein Family Concert Series. And this season, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Audrey G. Baird Stars of Tomorrow concert.

Speaking of new beginnings, the orchestra announced in December 2016 our intention to move to the Grand Theater on West Wisconsin Avenue. This is an incredibly exciting time for the Milwaukee Symphony, and we thank everyone who has supported this project. We look forward to sharing more details with you in the months to come.

We are pleased to announce a balanced budget for the 2016.17 season, the Milwaukee Symphony’s fifth balanced budget in the last six years. Thank you to our wonderful patrons, donors, volunteers, and our community for continuing to support our orchestra and keep the music playing in Milwaukee.

Onward…

EDO DE WAART FINALE

From the first joyful notes of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro to the final tranquil moments of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, Music Director Edo de Waart’s valedictory year was the perfect conclusion to his eight-year tenure in Milwaukee, which included sold-out concerts, critical acclaim, and a celebrated performance at Carnegie Hall.

De Waart’s 2016.17 season began with the third and final installment of the Milwaukee Symphony’s Mozart/da Ponte semi-staged opera series with Le nozze di Figaro, directed by Robin Guarino.

“A spectacularly well-balanced cast of gorgeous, nimble voices, the owners of which proved to be fine actors, was framed on a small, raked, stage-within-a-stage at the Marcus Center’s Uihlein Hall, joined occasionally by a small contingent of the MSO Chorus. …The MSO’s ensemble cast did a truly spectacular job of telling the unbelievable story in believable fashion, each of them creating a character the audience cared about.” -Elaine Schmidt, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

This season-long celebration included guest artists Emmanuel Ax, Ronald Brautigam, the Naughton sisters, and Sasha Cooke, as well as classical masterpieces including Strauss’s Four Last Songs, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, Holst’s The Planets, and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7.

De Waart’s tenure came to a triumphant end with Mahler’s impassioned Symphony No. 3, featuring mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, the Milwaukee Symphony Women’s Chorus, and the Milwaukee Children’s Choir’s Voices of Eterna.

“After the expansive world evoked in the symphony’s first 75 minutes, the final movement finds composer, musicians, and conductor digging in to think about what it all means. There are moments of fierce contemplation, crushing doubt, and finally resounding affirmation. I can’t think of a better way for a conductor to depart than with this reverberant ‘Yes,’ to the power of great music.” -Paul Kosidowski, Milwaukee Magazine

Following the 2016.17 season, de Waart became the MSO’s music director laureate and will continue to conduct several concerts per season in the years to come.

COMPLETE BRAHMS SYMPHONIES CD RELEASE

To commemorate de Waart’s tenure, the MSO

recorded all four of Brahms’ symphonies in

May of 2016. Those CDs were given away

free to concert-goers attending the Mahler

Symphony No. 3 weekend.

LAMBEAU FIELD

For the first time, the Milwaukee Symphony and

Chorus performed for a Green Bay Packers’ game

at Lambeau Field. Not just for the national anthem,

but the halftime show and a flash mob in the

Lambeau Field Atrium with a rousing rendition

of “Sweet Caroline, GO PACK GO.” It was the MSO’s

largest audience to date with more than 78,000

in stadium attendance. The impact of performing

at the famed field was felt far beyond game day. Through social media promotion, there were 13,700 unique

visits to mso.org, one million impressions between Facebook and Twitter, and more than six million people

saw the MSO’s flash mob video.

TEEN CHORAL PARTNERS PERFORM FOR A SOLDOUT TEEN CONCERT

In February, 190 singers from four Wisconsin high

schools participated in the MSO’s Teen Choral Partners

program for the 2016.17 season. These talented high

school students traveled to Uihlein Hall to rehearse

and perform Poulenc’s Gloria with the MSO and

conductor Randy Swiggum. This once-in-a-lifetime

opportunity helps choral students grow as musicians

and is often their first introduction to the orchestra.

The participating school choirs included:

Bay Port High School Concert Choir, Green Bay; Living Word Lutheran High School A Cappella Choir, Jackson;

McFarland High School A Cappella Choir, McFarland; Pius XI Catholic High School Concert Choir, Milwaukee.

The performance was sold out, with more than 2,000 Southeastern Wisconsin teenagers in attendance.

SYMPHONY IN THE COMMUNITY

Deeply vested in the community, the MSO performed

25 community concerts throughout Milwaukee,

including a week-long neighborhood residency

program in Riverwest and Harambee in September.

The MSO’s Concerts for Schools program reached

22,291 students from across Wisconsin and Illinois,

while its Arts in Community Education (ACE) program

served 7,632 students from 22 schools. As part of its

ongoing partnership, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) students represented 30 percent and 44 percent

of the Concerts for Schools and ACE program participants, respectively.

The MSO’s musicians are connecting with members of the Milwaukee community every day, and more people than ever before are choosing to attend our inspiring performances.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME: MSO ANNOUNCES PLANS TO RESTORE THE GRAND THEATER

During the 2016.17 season, the MSO announced

plans to restore the Grand Theater, thereby helping

to preserve its standing as a community treasure by

cultivating artistic excellence and further solidifying

its financial future. The centerpiece of the Grand

Theater building, built in 1930, is a concert hall

featuring outstanding acoustics, beautiful architecture,

and expert craftsmanship. Located on West Wisconsin

Avenue – arguably one of the most traveled

thoroughfares in Milwaukee – it is close to I-94

and I-43, and within walking distance to numerous

high-quality restaurants and other entertainment

destinations. In addition to the new concert hall,

the building would serve as home to the MSO’s

community education and administrative office space.

“The Grand Theater is a beautiful, acoustically-

outstanding, historic performance hall that is

perfectly suited for symphonic performances and

could undoubtedly create magical, memorable

experiences for all of our patrons,” said Mark Niehaus.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to

acquire and operate our own venue, which would

put us in a position of strength for decades to come.

We are convinced it’s an absolute win-win for

the MSO, patrons of the performing arts and the

City of Milwaukee as a whole.”

POPS SEASON BRINGS MOVIE MAGIC TO THE SYMPHONY

This season, the MSO continued to bring cinema

magic to Uihlein Hall with performances of Disney’s

FANTASIA and Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the

Lost Ark: Live with Orchestra, which sold out on

December 30 and 31. In addition, the MSO’s Music

of John Williams program, which featured some

of the composer’s most well-loved music of all time,

sold out three performances. Our Holiday Pops

programs have been so well-attended that we have added a fourth performance to the 2017.18 season line-up.

PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE RIVERSIDE AND RAVINIA

During the 2016.17 season, the MSO enjoyed wonderful

partnerships with both the Riverside (Pabst Theater

Group) and Ravinia. The orchestra performed twice at

Ravinia during the 2016.17 season with Bugs Bunny at

the Symphony II in September and La La Land in June.

The MSO’s partnership with the Riverside included

performances of Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions,

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Music of

David Bowie, Celtic Woman: Home for Christmas, and La La Land. These important partnerships introduce the

MSO to audiences who might not necessarily attend a symphony concert. These collaborations and special

performances which are not a part of the MSO classics, pops, or education series also increase earned revenue.

The fee-for-service revenue was more than double that of 2015.16.
