United Way of Central Minnesota connects resources to accelerate community wide solutions.

UNITED WAY POSITION

Page 3: Annual Report LIG recognition booklet 2014 final

An incredible year!

There is no other way to describe the past year for United Way of Central Minnesota.

Throughout the year, we had over 11,000 community members step forward through their giving, over 6,000 volunteers give their time, and more than 50 partner organizations working collaboratively to find solutions to our biggest community issues.

This is the definition of incredible.

In my first year as the President and CEO, I have heard from so many of you how important United Way is to our community and I couldn’t agree more. I have been able to experience firsthand the needs in our community, the support from our community to make a real difference, and the progress we are already making. Something I knew from my first day was that without the support

of our donors and our many partners, we would not be able to develop solutions in our focus areas of homelessness, financial stability, access to food, early learning/early literacy and quality out of school time. We have big goals in each of these areas and every year we will report back to you on our progress towards our goals. On the next page you will find our first community report card. This first year report card will track the incredible investments we made in each area. We will use this report card to track our progress and report back to our donors, volunteers, and community partners.

Solutions will not be achieved overnight but with continued support and a drive to monitor and evaluate progress, all of us working together can make a difference.

Thank you for your time, energy, and financial support. Living United is not just a slogan. We actively live it as a way to create solutions.

Thank you for all you do every day!

A LETTER FROM ED LAUBACH Thank You!

Many Annual Reports end with “Thank you”. But it’s too important to put off until the end. So . . . Thank you community members, volunteers, donors, partner agencies and programs! And a big thank you to those who have had the courage and

foresight to seek out and take advantage of the programs and

services which our UWCM staff and partner agencies and programs provide.

Thanks to all of you for your creativity, commitment and constructive criticism; your patience and perseverance. Thank you for your gifts of your time, talent and treasure.

I would be remiss if I didn’t include a special “Shout Out” to the United Way Staff. Your energy, care and commitment to the mission of United Way are inspirational. And speaking of energy and commitment, thank you to our CEO, Jon Ruis, for all you brought to and all you have already done for United Way.

Finally, a thank you to our board members. United Way has been blessed over the years by the leadership of the individuals on our board who donate so much of themselves to the United Way of Central Minnesota mission. Thank you board members for your commitment.

It has been an honor to serve as the Board Chair of United Way of Central Minnesota. Our future is bright. Together we can meet our Mission -- To improve people’s lives by mobilizing the caring power of Central Minnesota.

TIANNA'S STORY

MARY'S STORY

ALLISON & GARY'S STORY

GAIL, PAUL & BRANDON'S STORY

Tianna found herself homeless, after leaving an abusive relationship, with her 14-month-old son, Thorn. She

took the first step in changing her life, she called 2-1-1 and found The Salvation Army. Securing a safe and stable environment for Thorn was one of the biggest obstacles Tianna wanted to get past.

Tianna:• Utilized Child Care Choices to secure childcare• Used Tri-CAP to help with the first few months

of rent in her new home• Secured employment• Enrolled in Imagination Library to receive free

books for Thorn

Tianna is very thankful to have found community resources. It wouldn't have been possible without United Way. Tianna can honestly say that she is proud of the progress that she has made in her life not only for herself but her son's life as well.

Brandon was having uncontrollable aggressive temper tantrums, and as a four-year-old he had gottenexpelled from multiple preschool programs.

Because of the Village Family Center, Brandon was able learn to control his behavior and develop skills to be successful in school.

Allison and Gary work long days with six kids, which providing for can be a hard task.

Because of the Boys and Girls Club, their children have been able to receive healthy food, gain valuable life experiences and

lessons as well develop strong character traits that will benefit them in the future.

Mary was worried her family wasn’t getting the adequate amount of nutritious food they needed to live healthy lives.

Because of support from the Foley food shelf Mary was able to provide the healthy food she had always wanted to feed her family.

GRANITE SOCIETYEvery year, a commitment to United Way and to improving the community is reflected in the generosity of thousands of people all across Central Minnesota. By going a step further and establishing a planned gift to United Way, some donors are investing in the future of United Way and therefore the future of our community.

United Way of Central Minnesota friends who make a planned gift will be recognized as a member of the United Way Granite Society. As Granite Society members, local residents ensure a solid foundation for our community for generations to come.

For more information on how making a planned gift could benefit you and the community, please call United Way of Central Minnesota regarding Leadership and Planned Gifts, 320-252-0227.

ADDITIONAL PROGRAM SUPPORT

Imagination Library (IL) is a program of the United Way of Central Minnesota Success By 6 initiative and offered in partnership with the Dollywood Foundation. Parents with children, from birth to their fifth birthday, who live in the UWCM service area, are eligible to sign up for Imagination Library. Each month children enrolled in the program receive a free, age appropriate book in the mail. The program is offered to families at no cost.

Imagination Library is partially funded locally by individual donations from parents, community members, organizations and special grants. Last year 11,022 children received books through the program. A child can be sponsored for $30 per year.
