Details of Activities

1. Attending Leadership Workshop and Conference of SPIE:

In June 15th-18th, one of our members, on behalf of our SPIE student club, Harbin

Institute of Technology Chapter, attended the 2015 Annual Meeting of OSA/SPIE

Student Chapters in Wuhan, China. 2015 is the international year of light, which is a

global initiative that will highlight to the citizens of the world the importance of light

and optical technologies in their lives, for their futures, and for the development of

society.

The Annual Meeting of OSA/SPIE Student Chapters is held by Wuhan National

Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The

meeting aims to promote cooperation and exchanges between students in domestic

optics field and enhance the ability in scientific research of PhD and master degree

students.

The meeting included lectures of academicians and traveling scholar, academic

exchanges of students, industry competition and other colorful academic activities. It

invited Min Gu, the Australian Academy of Science academician, Jianquan Yao,

China Science Academy of Sciences, Xiling Pan, SPIE Fellow, Limin Tong, Professor

of Zhejiang University, OSA/SPIE student representatives of nearly 20 well-known

2016 Annual report of Harbin Institute of Technology Student Chapter

research institutes to attend the meeting.

In the meeting, Shengwei Zhong gave a speech titled “Fusion Technologies of

Multisource Remote Sensing Images”, which introduced the typical methods of fusion

on hyperspectral images and panchromatic images, and their advantages and weaknesses. The

exchanges with other students brought up many new ideas which are significant in further research.

Shengwei also attend the student innovation and entrepreneurship showcase and visit the WNLO

and the functional laboratory, which shows the latest developments in the field of optics.

2. Attended Leadership Workshop and Conference of SPIE

In August 8th-13th, Shengwei Zhong attend the conference of 2015 SPIE

Optics+ Photonics in San Diego, USA.

On August 8th, Shengwei attended the leadership workshop. Nearly 250 SPIE

student chapter leaders from around the world gathered at the San Diego Marriott

Marquis and Marina to talk about issues about being a leader. During the highly

interactive, all-day event facilitated by Jean-luc Doumont (Louvain and Stanford),

students discussed what being a leader is all about (and what it is not about), how to

communicate across cultures, and how to go from ideas to achievements. Also, during

the meeting, Dr. Robert Lieberman, SPIE’s President Elect, talks about the impact of

2016 Annual report of Harbin Institute of Technology Student Chapter

light and light-based technologies on the world. Optics is everywhere and is

fundamental to information communication.

In the meeting, Shengwei gave two oral presentations of papers titled “A Novel

Anomaly Detection Approach Based on Clustering and Decision-Level Fusion” and

“An improved full automated endmember extraction algorithm based on endmember

independence”. Two novel methods of anomaly detection and endmember extraction

of remote sensing images are brought up respectively.

During the conference, new ideas, new technologies, new instruments appears

everywhere and helps a lot in our further research.

3. Held an Intercommunions Allow Students Who Have Been an

International Conference to Introduce Their Trips

We set up an Intercommunions for our members on Nov. 16th. During the

meeting, six of our members who have been abroad for international conference gave

a representation about the conference and their trips. One of them went to Quebec,

Canada for International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), one to San Diego

for SPIE leadership workshop and Optics + Photonics 2016 and the others to Milan,

Italy for International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS 2015).

They not only introduced what they learnt from the conference, but also the

impression of the cities and things happened during their trips. I think all of the

members can learn something through the Intercommunions, both academically and

experienced.

4. Organized an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle flight experiments.

The UAV is used for acquiring data for 3-D modeling. We obtained multi-angle

data of bridge, crawler excavator, building, cargo ship and storage tanks. Here are

some photos taken during the field experiments.

The UAV took off to imaging cargo ship

The HeadWall imaging hyperspectral spectrometer and SVC point spectrometer

are used to obtain the spectral curves of sand with different moisture content.

The Hyperspectral Team

The infrared camera is used for retrieval of sea surface temperature. The members

stayed till nightfall so as to monitoring the variation of the sea surface temperature.

By the way, the photo below was taken by the UAV when Ran We, our former

president graduated.

5. Participated a lecture given by Cheng-I Chang

On July 17, Dr. Chein-I Chang gave an lecture titled “Real Time Hyperspectral

Target Detection” at Daliann Maritime University. Four of our PhD members attend

the meeting and make a presentation to the other members when they came back.

Dr. Chein-I Chang is a professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering,

University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is IEEE fellow and SPIE fellow. Dr.

Chang’s research areas include data compression, digital signal processing, statistical

communication theory, and spectral analysis.

During the lecture, Dr. Chang stated the difficulties in remote sensing images real

time processing and explained his idea of solving them detailedly.

Here are some photos taken during the lecture.

After the real time target detection lecture, Dr. Chang also gave us a speech on

how to get our paper published. The members learned a lot from the speech. For

instance, if we want to submit a paper, we must know the review process. Dr. Chang

also gave us several example to rebut the reviewers’ comments. Try to be nice and do

not get intop personal in language, no matter how much you do not like the

comments.

After the lecture, Dr. Chang answered our questions nicely and took photos with

our members. The photo below is Chein-I Chang (in the middle), our members and

the host Prof. Song.

6. Multi-source remote sensing Big data processing Seminar

On December 26, we held a seminar at the Modern Business Centre. The list of

those attended are as follows.

Dr. Bormin Huang (University of Wisconsin–Madison, SPIE fellow)

Dr. Dandan Liu (Director of Electronic and Information Engineering,

Heilongjiang Institute of Technology)

Dr. Xiaofeng Li and Dr. Xiaojie Li (Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural

Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences)

Mr. Chunhui Zhao (Director of Geology Surveying and Mapping Institute of

Heilongjiang, China).

Dr. Xiaofei Wang (Associate Professor in Harbin Engineering University)

Prof. Ye Zhang (Advisor of our chapter)

Prof. Junping Zhang (Professor of Image and Information Institute)

During the seminar, Dr. Huang give us a speech about parallel computing using

GPU. Dr. Liu gave an introduction of their research. Dr. Xiaofei Wang talked about

the developing direction he thought. Dr. Xiaofeng Li make the representation about

estimation of snowpack parameters and soil moisture. Prof. Junping Zhang discussed

how to turn our research into application. At last, Prof. Ye Zhang summarized the
