Conclusion24
Welcome to the Charity Week 2013 Annual Report. This is a special year for us not only because we are pleased to announce that the Charity Week vision of unity has spread to Canada or because it was another record-breaking year of raising money for orphans and needy children, but because this marks the 10th annual Charity Week.
For any organization, a decade of existence is a milestone worth celebrating. This applies even more so to an organization such as ours – completely volunteer led and run. However, we prefer to focus on some of the other numbers - thousands of students fundraising, almost £3 Million raised, more than 50,000 child beneficiaries in more than 11 countries.
There are many who deserve praise, from the person who held a bucket for 5 minutes to our charity partner Islamic Relief. As you go through this Annual Report, detailing all the highs and lows, the achievements and the challenges of the past year, you will hopefully come to the same realization that we did. Despite the phenomenal things that have been achieved so far, inshaAllah, the best is yet to come.

2013 was the year that we focussed on developing our regional teams and although the graphs on the right shows the increase in quantity, it does not show the increase in quality.

Charity Week doesn’t just happen. It takes years of planning, months of work and tremendous dedication by a team of individuals that can only be described as exceptional. The Charity Week 2013 family deserves all our thanks and du’aas.

As Charity Week grows, so do the costs that sustain it. The challenge is to ensure that we are as meticulous about delivering value for money as we were in the earliest days.
We hope to lead by example and remind the Muslim youth that money from charities is a privilege and not a right for us to bargain for.

Coordinating the deposit of monies safely into the correct Islamic Relief bank account and tracing every penny no matter where they are is next to impossible... unless of course you have a dedicated finance team like we do here at Charity Week!
Charity Week provides the infrastructure, accountability and transparency that sets the benchmark for Muslim youth projects precisely because we have teams dedicated to fulfilling our trust to each donor and each child.

There are tens of thousands who are currently besieged by regime forces inside and around Damascus. They are being shelled and slowly starved to death. Islamic Relief is one of the only Muslim charities in the world that is able to get help to these most vulnerable people via the UNWRA. Charity Week is the majority donor to this effort.
PROJECTS
15
PROJECTSApart from giving each and every volunteer the opportunity to select which projects to fund, at Charity Week - we have a dedicated team that work throughout the year with experts to get the maximum impact for each penny raised. This year, we have managed to fund a unique and tailor- made project for Syria that reflects the unique nature of this tragedy.
Emergency relief to children inside Syria (including besieged areas of Damascus) and educational support for those suffering in refugee camps
The war in Syria has created tens of thousands of orphans and traumatised young children. Millions are in refugee camps in neighbouring countries but millions more are trapped inside in the most difficult circumstances imaginable. The funds you have raised will help both children inside and outside Syria when they need it most.
The children inside Syria will be given emergency relief (including health and hygiene related items). This includes besieged children in Damascus who we are able to help through UNRWA.
SYRIA
Cost: £214,410
For the children in the refugee camps, our funds will help take them out of child labour, begging and prostitution and place them in schools. Not only will this allow them to pick up the pieces of their education, it will also keep them in a safe and monitored environment for at least part of the day. They will also receive vaccinations.
Islamic Relief will fund the second part of this project by supporting the families of these children with rent, electricity and food packages.
Although their present situation is difficult, giving them an education gives them some hope for a brighter future inshaAllah.
Coordinating with Islamic Relief via the UNRWA was a significant achievement allowing us to give the maximum amount for their capacity (given the dangerous situation inside Syria and Damascus in particular). We are humbled that your efforts make up a major portion of the relief to our brothers and sisters in the blessed land of Shaam.
PROJECTS 17
PROJECTS
SYRIA
PROJECTSWhen all the funds are raised, our work is far from complete. In collaboration with Islamic Relief, the CW team coordinates a process where those who have raised the funds can choose worthy projects to spend the money on.
Developing the skills of disabled children in Egypt (EIRC) benefitting 500 disabled children
The Early Intervention and Rehabilitation Centre (EIRC) was established in 2002. This unique project aims to develop the skills of disabled children and modify their behaviour through high quality educational and rehabilitative services.
This project will enable children with disabilities to fully participate and integrate into their communities so they can move towards leading a more normal life. Some of the aspects this programme will focus on include speech therapy, counselling, physiotherapy and arts activities. Regular health checks will also be carried out and those requiring further help will be referred to specialised hospitals for support.
EGYPT
PROJECTS 18
Cost: £139,500.03
Continuing one-to-one orphan sponsorships in Gaza & Pakistan
We made a pledge to look after these children until they were old enough to look after them-selves and despite their respective tragedies receding in the public consciousness, they will never forget and so neither will we.
Reconstruction of classrooms & water hand pumps within a school in Sudan benefitting 6,120 children
Many schools in various parts of Sudan are struggling with lack of permanent classrooms, dated furniture and poorly maintained toilets.
This project will construct 11 classrooms and three teachers’ offices so that the children can have a comfortable place to come and learn. It will also build four new toilets and six new hand pumps, as well as refurbishing ten of the existing hand pumps
to ensure the children have access to safe clean water.
We know that prevention cannot come only from bricks and water, but from education and empowering the children to prevent the spread of disease. This will be done by setting up workshops on Hygiene Awareness and Child Protection Awareness to ensure the children grow up in a safe and clean environment.

ROUND-OFFDINNERS
INTERNATIONALLocation: LondonAttendance: 1000The 10th anniversary was a special occasion that deserved to be celebrated in style. It deserved to have one of the largest Muslim student audiences from across the country, with high class food, special talks and an atmosphere that was electric.
The point about having a round-off at the end of Charity Week is to celebrate the achievements of the past week as well as generate excitement for the following year. In 2013, the round-offs did this in bucket loads...
21
WALESLocation: Cardiff Attendance: 110 The decoration was beautiful and well thought out, the talks informative and the food was tasty. The Wales round-off ticked all the boxes mashaAllah with it being one of the most diverse and excited crowds to attend the event.
MIDLANDSLocation: Birmingham Attendance: 250A night to remember in Birmingham with lots of brotherhood, sisterhood and a whole lot of takbeers.
NORTHLocation: Manchester Attendance: 200A last minute change in venue wasn’t enough to stop this being an excellent evening with brothers and sisters from across the North coming together.
SCOTLANDLocation: Perth Attendance: 130 The Scots know how to throw a shin-dig and the Scotland round-off was no exception. From cheering Muslim youth to a staged head shave, this was a night to be remembered.
SOUTHLocation: Surrey Attendance: 90Hosted by the ever gracious brothers and sisters from Surrey, the South round-off was a good mixture of entertainment and celebration. The hosts kept the mood light, but the brotherhood heavy.

BUDGET + RESOURCES2013 was the year that Canada joined the CW family. Starting up Charity Week in a new country is an impressive feat that should not be underestimated. It took immense dedication, perseverance and patience to achieve this. Ten universities seized the opportunity and raised an impressive total of $21,860 (£11,840.69).

The truly amazing part was the unity between volunteers not just on campus, not just in the same city, but in different countries! Charity Week spread to Canada without a single meeting face-to-face. Guess we really do have much more in common than we think.
CANADA
Venue: Toronto Attendance: 80The first ever Canadian round-off was arranged with less than a month to plan... and yet, you wouldn’t know it from the lovely evening that they put on. Amjad Tarsin (Muslim Chaplain of Toronto Uni) gave a beautiful reminder that complemented the ambience. An evening not to forget.

sWorking separately, we would never have been able to raise as much funds, inspire as many people or have a dedicated team working aorund the year to ensure that every penny reached those that need it most like these starving people in Yarmouk camp in Damascus.Being united together as a team - having unity in organising, unity in fundraising and unity in spending - is what is best for us, our society and the people who need our help the most. Let’s work together.
THIS IS WHY...
An Annual Report is not a bureaucratic exercise. It is a letter from the Charity
Week team of 2013 to future generations. A letter containing advice and warnings,
inspiration and hope. It is just one way that we ensure that the next generation will
learn from our mistakes and build on our successes. It is our history, our story.
If you are reading this at a later date, make duaa for us as we have made duaa for
you. May Allah grow this project in his shade as long as we stay true to the vision.
The Prophet (SAW) told us to take care of orphans. The Prophet (SAW) told us
that Allah prescribed proficiency in all things. The Prophet (SAW) told us that
planning ahead is a noble virtue. The Prophet (SAW) taught us to prepare a legacy,
that consistency was better than one-hit wonders. The Prophet (SAW) told us
that we were one ummah, that we should be united.
Here at Charity Week - we renew our intentions to live by your words O Prophet of
Allah, just as we have done for the past 10 years. We hear and we strive to obey.

* Our dedicated finance teams across the country work hard to track every penny to ensure that it is banked appropriately. We do this precisely because we know what is on the line– the trust of the donors, the reputation of the institutions and volunteers and the lives of those most in need. Only in Charity Week do we have a dedicated team providing this level of transparency and financial accountability.
