West Burlington High School Counselor Annual Report 2015-2016

Counseling Report Tamara Levinson, K-5

Amy Ryan, 6-12

Introduction This report will be written in three sections:

• An overview of the K-12 Guidance Program • A summary of the program specific to K-5 • A summary of the program specific to 6-12

Goal

The goal is the same regardless of the client or situation. The goal of the counselors is to offer the client the opportunity to realize he/she can become self-sufficient enough to modify behavior and/or cope with situations dealing with personal/social, secondary education, post-secondary education, health, and or career concerns through individual conferences or group conferences either with the school counselor and/or with other helping professionals.

Counselor Availability The counseling program depends a great deal upon counselor availability. The following denotes the schedules of the two counselors: Jr./Sr. High School approximately forty (40) hours Elementary School approximately forty (40) hours

Outside of School – The counselors remain available after school hours for consultations at school, home visits, phone contact, and other commitments. Flex Time – The counselors will continue some non-traditional hours, by appointment, to assist with accessibility.

Counselor Updates

Both counselors continue to attend seminars and community meetings so as to keep current with progressive counseling trends.

Public Relations It is important for counselors to inform people about the counseling program and to reach out in various ways. This year, the counselors provided information to parents and students through special mailings, telephone calls, and other methods. The following are examples of the types of information provided:

• Monthly School newsletter articles that include information on education, careers, behavior, and other points of interest.

• The counselor’s annual report • Transition Events for incoming 5th grade students and their parents. • Senior letters regarding credits, graduation status, ACT and other school related information. • Financial aid, college, and career information for juniors and seniors and their families. • Parent/student meeting for incoming ninth grade about high school and Four Year Plan

* To make as a priority, continued communication with parents, students, staff, and community. *Continue to promote a positive, caring school atmosphere.

31

Page 34: ANNUAL REPORT INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT OF …wbschools.us/publications/Board Agendas/2015-2016 Annual Report.pdfDISTRICT SIZE: Approximately two square miles . VALUATION: Valuation

Educational Testing The following tests are found in the testing program and the counselor were active as administrators, proctors, and interpreters, This program was established to offer the client(s) insight to themselves in both their strongest and weakest areas:

• Iowa Assessments • Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test

(PSAT/NMSQT) • Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) • American College Test (ACT) • Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) • COMPASS Test • Pre-Act

* Our goal is to continue extensive counselor involvement in testing programs and assess the testing program to meet the State of Iowa CSIP.

Personal-Social Counseling Personal-Social Counseling generally takes place on an individual or small group basis. This component was provided to the elementary, junior ad senior high staff, students and parents. The following are areas of concern that were dealt with:

• Self-Understanding/Esteem • Peer Relations • Home and Family Relationships • Teacher Relations • Dating • Grade Improvement/Motivation • Social Skill Development • Divorce • Substance Abuse in the Family • Various Play Groups • Conflict Management • Student Death • Substance Use of Students • Ethical Decision Making • Mental Health Issues
