Lucy Wyka Gift of Adoption Fund Co-Founder

When Gene and I founded Gift of Adoption as a private family foundation in 1996, our vision was truly to help ease the financial costs of adoptions for adoptive parents.

We had adopted our son, Joseph, from Peru. When we traveled there, we found that most of the families there were not able to afford adoption in the way we were blessed that we could. Many of them had mortgaged their homes, hosted bake sales and garage sales and borrowed large amounts of money.

Gene and I started Gift of Adoption hoping that we could help a few adoptive parents get over the last financial hurdles of adoption. The organization grew in a way we never expected it to. That growth, I believe, came from the unmet need for it.

Transitioning Gift of Adoption from a private to a public charity in 2001 primarily had to do with the fact that we had so many requests for grants and we had such limited funds. Going out to the public for funds was a big step, and a lot of people, including Gene, worked very hard to make it work.

I’m very proud of where it’s come since then. There have been so many wonderful staff and volunteers and they have taken what our vision was and moved it beyond anything we could have imagined.

The people who get involved with Gift of Adoption chapters share the foundational belief that having a loving family is a basic right and necessity for children everywhere. That’s a really important aspect of this organization. Before we had chapters, we hosted bowl-a-thons in our hometown of Port Washington. All of our kids and many of our friends with adopted kids, as well as people that knew us and wanted to support us, would show up in Gift of Adoption t-shirts. When I look back on the early days of Gift of Adoption, I think back to those bowl-a-thons and all the fun we had, back when it was very grassroots.

It’s amazing to think of how far we’ve brought the organization since those early days and to see it now. We still host small, grassroots events, but also big, beautiful galas filled with people who all believe in this cause. As Gift of Adoption moves into the next 25 years, I love that its founding principle that grants will always be awarded without discrimination remains and that the organization is staying current with what’s going on in our world with an ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

I’m very proud of Pam, the staff and the Board, for also keeping the mission priority on helping vulnerable children for whom this may be their one and only chance at ever having a family. Adoption is beautiful, but it often is both financially daunting and emotionally difficult. Taking some pressure off the financial side of it is a gift that makes an immediate and generational impact. As we celebrate our 25th Anniversary we can see now that our gifts to Gift of Adoption go on for 25 years, and then another 25 years, and so on.

“Seven years after the first photo, she’s traded in her pink poufy dress and would rather be on the soccer field getting grass stains and dirt marks!!” - Kayla

As we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Gift of Adoption, we took the opportunity to catch up with some of the children who were featured in our previous annual reports to see where they are NOW. Throughout these pages you see current photos of children whose lives were permanently changed for the better when they joined their forever families over the last 25 years. This is the lasting impact of your support of Gift of Adoption. We look forward to seeing what the next 25 years bring for these children and the children we will reach together in the coming years.

June 2020 marked the completion of Gift of Adoption’s “500 in 5” Growth Plan, an ambitious plan to grow impact from reaching 212 children to 500 children a year over 5 years. We feel incredibly fortunate to have succeeded in uniting 469 children with their forever families in this challenging 2020 year.

Since 2016 Gift of Adoption has reached 1,837 children (cumulative growth of 121%) thanks to the commitment and generosity of thousands of donors and volunteers who are helping Gift of Adoption make adoption a philanthropic priority for those who care about children having the ability to grow up in loving families.
