Annual Report FY2019 (July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019)

Dear Community Partner,

The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy strives to expand its impact on both the local community and on a broader scale. We would not able to achieve this impact without the generous support from the community that allows us to focus on our mission to preserve and advance natural open space through science, education and stewardship.

This year we have reached new heights and turned our focus towards having a broader impact in our three focus areas of science, education and stewardship.

• Our scientific research continues to expand regionally and will be shared globally. • Our educational offerings have expanded into STEAM and our youth education

programs embed the new Arizona Science Standards. • Our more than 650 volunteer stewards continue to contribute over 60,000 hours

per year and help encourage and educate more people to become stewards of their land for future generations.

This ensures we maximize the return on your investment in us.

It is my honor and privilege to lead this organization as we grow and expand. Again, none of this would be possible without your support. As we lean into our 29th year, I hope we can count on your continuing encouragement and engagement with McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, where science is in our nature.

Justin Owen Executive Director

Leveraging Our Scientific Research on a Broader Scale

Arid and semi-arid environments like the Sonoran Desert are the least studied of all environments, yet they cover almost 40% of the world’s land mass. By 2050 over 50% of the world’s population will live in these environments. It is essential to determine ways we can live within them in a sensitive and sustainable way.

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is home to more than 950 types of plants and animals, identified by our Parsons Field Institute, making the Preserve one of the richest ecological areas in the valley. We have identified:

411 plant types

152 bird species

30 mammal species

36 reptile and amphibian species

More than 350 invertebrate types

This year we added 20 new plant types and significantly increased the number of invertebrate types identified.

Page 3: Annual Report FY2019 (July 1, 2018 June 30, 2019)

As part of our satellite program at Northern Arizona University, we continue with our soil crust experiments which involve “growing” soil crust in controlled environments to determine if it can be replicated. Results to date show that in only 11 weeks, crusts increased by 38-62%. This type of growth in its natural environment can take more than 15 years. We have now replanted our grown crust in the natural desert for the ultimate test of viability. This research would have a significant impact in the fight against dust storms as missing soil crust cause dust storms that can lead to rapid environmental degradation and consequences for life at all levels on a global basis.

Non-native invasive plants are becoming more challenging. Wildfires in many areas are caused and worsened by the fuel load generated from invasive plant species throughout the world. In partnership with the City of Scottsdale, we are researching different removal techniques that we can demonstrate and share broadly. This will help us within the Preserve in addition to helping our neighbors on every continent. We are learning from the lessons taught around the globe as wildfires are increasing in frequency and duration. Through cooperation, research, and implementation of remedies that work, we are able to protect the Sonoran Desert for generations to come.

The Changing Face of Education

In 2019, we renamed our group of expanding educational offerings the Sonoran Education Center. This encompasses adult, youth and volunteer education programs. The new name represents our enhanced approach to education which embeds our scientific research and teaches us all what we can do differently in our everyday lives to further conservation.

Our youth and family educational offerings also have a new name:

This year, we:

Educated over 13,000 youth through interactive activities and school

visits.

Launched our first STEAM educational offering - Spectacular Saguaro - for 3rd grade students. Spectacular Saguaro involved 240 Title-I students and was sold out within 48 hours. We will expand as our resourcing allows and have the ambition to ultimately include offerings for all grades.

Page 5: Annual Report FY2019 (July 1, 2018 June 30, 2019)

Held our annual Junior Citizen Science Festival. Based on survey results to date 95% of the students who attended are more interested in science and 85% are more interested in a career in science.

Adult education remains a key part of what we do.

We taught more than 4,000 adults through free hikes, lectures and

activities.

Through education, the people who live in and visit the Sonoran Desert become part of the environment and learn to respect and value this unique and diverse ecosystem, that while singular, is part of the larger ecosystem and environment that nourishes and sustains all life on Earth.

We Could Not Succeed Without our Stewards

We have over 650 dedicated and skilled volunteer stewards who work tirelessly to deliver meaningful experiences both within the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and greater Sonoran Desert.

Our stewards patrol the Preserve’s 225 miles of trails, act as ambassadors at trailheads, partner with the City of Scottsdale to construct and maintain the trails, deliver information about unique topics and offer free educational opportunities, guide walks, hikes and bike rides and contribute to citizen science scientific research. During 2019 we partnered with the City of Scottsdale to design and implement the new interpretative signage at Fraesfield and Granite Mountain trailheads, enhancing the visitor experiences.

We welcome a new class of stewards monthly and existing stewards mentor this new class through the process to qualify as a steward.

Our stewards donated more than 64,000 hours in 2019 which is valued by City of Scottsdale at over $1,500,000 or almost 50 full-time employees. Many of our stewards are also donors, and in 2019 they donated $141,761.

Without our investors like you, we would not be able to deliver these services and impact both our community and visitors.
