Food Bank of the Rockies

Our 2008 - 2009 fiscal year marks 31 years helping to

feed those in need in our service area. This year

we saw a greater need than we've ever

experienced. Our partner agencies - soup kitchens,

pantries, shelters - reported substantial increases in the

numbers of people they serve; many saw their demand

double. More people sought food assistance due to the

difficult economy. Many of those in need were asking for

help for the first time.

Folks like the electrician and his family, who moved to

Denver, after the rural company where he worked for

many years closed. He hoped the move would provide

opportunities for employment. He struggled to find a job

and his wife, who did find work as a cosmetologist, was

diagnosed with breast cancer. With no insurance and

little income, they found themselves suddenly homeless.

He was staying at a men's shelter and his wife and kids were staying at another shelter. He

commented, “I thought I did everything right. I worked hard, always provided for my family. We

never needed help; in fact we helped others. I never thought we'd be in this situation.”

We learned about the electrician and his family’s plight while interviewing about 500 clients for

Feeding America's Hunger in America Survey, a national study performed every four years to get a

pulse on the issue of hunger. Our staff heard many heart breaking stories. Some of the questions

were difficult for clients to answer. To the question “My children were not eating because I just

couldn't afford enough food” we marked “Often True” and watched as the parent shook his head

and held back tears. It's hard to believe that, right here in our community, children go to bed hungry

at night and parents skip meals so their children can eat. But it does affirm our mission and inspire us

to keep doing what we do every day.

And we couldn't do what we do every day if it wasn't for our generous donors of time, food and

funds!

This year, we had more volunteer hours than ever before, equivalent to 35 full time employees.

Volunteers helped us distribute food, pack USDA boxes, fill orders, sort reclamation products, help

with office projects and so much more. We appreciate each and every one of them for sharing their

time and talents!

We continue to receive food donations from retailers, distributors, farmers and wholesalers, but the

volume of donated food this year did not keep up with the increased demand. Luckily, we were

fortunate to add King Soopers, City Markets, Sam's Club and Walmart Supercenter stores to our

Denver's Table Food Rescue Program pick-up schedule. The addition of these new retail donations

could not have come at a better time, adding hundreds of thousands of pounds of nutritious fresh

and frozen meat, dairy, produce and prepared product to our food list, food that would otherwise

be thrown away.

Our Mission:Our Mission:We will end hunger by efficiently procuring and distributing food and essentials to people in need through our partner agencies in Northern Colorado and Wyoming.

Our fund donors have also continued to give generously. From individuals to corporations and

foundations, gifts of cash allowed us to meet our annual budget and continue to be where we need

to be to keep our programs running. For this, we are truly grateful!

Finally and most notably, we wrapped up our 2009 fiscal year by meeting our capital campaign goal,

ending the year with our building paid in full. We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed

to the campaign. These donations and efforts made it possible to leverage the entire $1.15 million in

challenge grants made to us by our generous friends at the Boettcher, Gates Family and Kresge

Foundations.

The pages in this report share many milestones for the year and display the names of some of those

who helped make this year's accomplishments possible. Thank you! Together, we can make a big

difference. And that difference is felt every day by our neighbors in need: a hot meal for a child after

school, a tote filled with healthy food to help a senior through the month, a truckload of nutritious

food taken back to a shelter to feed battered women and children with no place else to go. It is all

possible because of your generosity!

For the past 4 years, Lift Up America has partnered with

Tyson Foods Inc. & Kroenke Sports to help bring the gift of

food to the less fortunate in Metro Denver. 15,000 pounds of

chicken is distributed at Dick's Sporting Goods Park and

Colorado Rapids Players help load agency vehicles.

from the crypt, a scarecrow that would actually scare you,

a few bloody beauties and several other horrific figures

team up to pack 960 pounds of community food boxes and

kick off a food drive a group of haunted houses held for FBR.

As part of the nationwide NFL “Click for Cans” Promotion,

Campbell's Chunky Soup donates 1,000 cans of soup to

FBR. Kids from FBR Member Agency, Bronco's Boys and

Girls Club construct football themed creations from the

cans. Afterwards, the kids enjoy soup for dinner.

FBR hosts a fun-filled Murder Mystery Dinner

where participants join forces at the Curtis Hotel,

to solve a murder and raise needed funds.

thDom and Jane and Mix 100.3 host the 10 Annual Charity

Marathon for FBR. After two days on the air, they raise enough

money to provide 6,887,880 meals for neighbors in need.

NovemberMedia personalities compete in Shop-O-Rama

to kick off the 2008 Check Out Hunger campaign at

Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage. $182,000 has been

raised for FBR children’s programs throughout the years.

The entire Colorado Rapids team and over 100 guests gather

at Splitz Bowling Center in Westminster for a night of food,

drink, prizes, socializing and some serious bowling. FBR brings

a few teams to join in the festivities and accepts a check for

$1500 as a result of the fundraiser.

300 turkeys from Will Smith, 4,600 pies from Village Inn

and 47,000 pounds of onions from Sakata farms help

make the holidays brighter for many.

Food Bank of the Rockies’ Guild members serve lunch

and provide presents and entertainment to children at

FBR Member Agency, Mount Saint Vincent's Home.

After 18 years of dedicated service to Food Bank of

the Rockies, Barbara Arko, Vice President of Development,

retires. Barbara was responsible for overseeing all fundraising

activities, board member recruitment and annual, capital and

endowment campaigns. She also served as FBR's interim CEO

in 2002. Barbara wore many hats for the organization and did

a remarkable job in each position she held. We will miss her!

Food Bank of the Rockies participates in a press conference and drives a truck in

the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Marade. Staff and volunteers collect food and

funds during the event. Volunteers also come work in our warehouse on the

holiday.

Hunger in America 2009, a nationwide research study, kicks off. Over the next four months, we visit 42

agencies and interview 500 clients. Every four years, Feeding America member food banks across the

U.S. participate in the study to gain data to better understand how hunger affects our citizens.

14 year old Kian Phair arrives on Tuesday evenings to volunteer

and lights up the warehouse with his big smile. He's always ready

to help agencies fill their orders and to take on any other task

asked of him. 9NEWS chooses him as one of their 9 Kids Who Care

winners for 2009.

Day, 200 volunteers help FBR by packing food

boxes, sorting and cleaning food, painting and

landscaping our property. It's amazing what a

difference one day and 200 hearts and hands

can make.

FBR. Fans respond,

dropping off cash

donations totaling over $4,000.

The Colorado Egg Producers donate 194,000 eggs to FBR

and cook up fresh omelets for our volunteers, staff and

young guests from FBR Member Agency, Little Giants Day

Care. The Easter Bunny makes a special visit to the food bank

to pose for pictures with the children.

The 17th annual National Association of Letter

Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has

letter carriers around Colorado busy picking up

food donations from mail boxes along their

routes. Volunteers assist the letter carriers by

bringing in and sorting the donated food and

packing it into postal bins. FBR trucks pick

up the food and return it to our warehouse

where 100 more volunteers sort and box

food to distribute to agencies.

Food Bank of the Rockies Employees

When Food Bank of the Rockies moved into

our current facility in 2006, we knew the need

for food assistance was increasing. Expansion

was necessary if we were to continue nourishing

those less fortunate in our community.

Thanks to contributions of time, talent and

resources, the tireless work of our staff, board

and many volunteers and the incredible

generosity of this community, Food Bank of the

Rockies meets the goals of our capital

campaign and starts the new fiscal year

with our building paid in full!

Donations and efforts allow us to leverage the

entire $1.15 million in challenge grants made to us

by our generous friends at the Boettcher, Gates

Family and Kresge Foundations.
