Annual Report2014

Dear Friends,

In 1994, when Casa Latina first opened its doors, Seattle was thriving and demand was high for temporary labor. Immigrants from Mexico and Central America began to arrive by freight trains from the south and waited for work on the sidewalks where contractors and homeowners knew to pick them up. Casa Latina started providing ESL classes and educational street theater to these new arrivals so that they could learn to speak up for themselves.

From those humble beginnings and with your support, Casa Latina created a safe and welcoming home for Seattle’s Latino immigrants. Today our members are able to look for work with dignity in a beautiful building, earn a fair wage for day labor and domestic work, participate in a vibrant community, and lobby for legislative changes that affect their lives.

2014 was a special year for Casa Latina: our membership increased by over 150 people; our education programs grew; and jobs dispatched and the average hourly wage for Casa Latina workers increased. Together with our allies, we won important legislation that helps all workers—immigrant and native born alike. Our victories included a path toward $15 minimum wage in Seattle and the establishment of the Seattle Office of Labor Standards.

These accomplishments, impressive in themselves, also translate into individual successes for Casa Latina members like Lucia, pictured and quoted on the back cover. Lucia came to us in a desperate situation—her husband was unable to work due to an on-the-job accident, Lucia herself was depressed and looking for work; and having lost their home, Lucia and her husband lived in their car. Casa Latina helped Lucia renew her sense of purpose. With us, she found a supportive community, classes that prepared her for a new field of work, and ultimately, stable employment. Today, Lucia and her husband are living with family, and they are just about ready to get their own home again.

Since I first began organizing Casa Latina, it has been my dream to build an organization strong enough to help people like Lucia and stable enough that it would continue even after I left. Seeing the successes of 2014—and the last twenty-one years—laid out before me, I believe that time has come. Preparations for this transition began in 2015 and will continue into the first quarter of 2016 when I will pass on the executive director role to a new leader.

Thank you—donors, allies, friends—for building and supporting Casa Latina. It’s only with your help that we’ve been able to create and maintain such a beautiful home for justice and dignity—and it’s with your continued support that I know Casa Latina will continue growing and empowering Seattle’s Latino community well into the future. ¡Adelante!

Sincerely,

Hilary Stern

Mission & VisionCasa Latina empowers Latino immigrants through educational and economic opportunites. Our vision is that the Latino community participate fully in the economy and democracy of this country. In order to realize this vision, we use three strategies: employment, education, and community organizing. By participating in these three pillars of Casa Latina’s programs, Latino immigrants increase their financial stability, become more employable, and strengthen their leadership skills and social ties. Casa Latina provides a supportive, vibrant community in which our members can better their lives and the lives of their families, while also advancing the rights and dignity of all workers.

EmploymentOur employment program connects Casa Latina members with day labor and domestic work and allows them to collectively set wages & control working conditions. Our current minimum wage is $16/hour. These temporary jobs provide members with the income they need to support their families and become more financially self-sufficient. Highlights from 2014 include:• Casa Latina workers voted to raise their

minimum wage to $16 per hour• 8,866 jobs dispatched by our worker center with

an average wage of $16.46 per hour

EducationOur education program provides low wage Latino immigrants with job skills trainings, financial literacy workshops, computer skills classes, workplace health and safety trainings, and daily drop-in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. ESL classes are essential to prepare members to participate fully in their communities. Health and safety classes teach members to stay safe on the job. Job skills trainings help workers broaden their employment options. We’re excited to share that in 2014:• 911 Casa Latina members attended our

workplace safety and skill trainings• 320 members attended English classes • 85 members attended computer classes

In addition to directly serving the Latino community in King County, Casa Latina has national impact as a model day worker center whose programs and curricula are shared and implemented at worker centers across the country. Among other projects, our ESL curriculum and the worker dispatch software we developed (“Machete”) are distributed widely.

Community OrganizingBecause we believe that those most affected by racial and socioeconomic inequities are the ones who are most qualified to propose solutions, we organize immigrant day laborers and domestic workers to work for justice for all immigrants, defend the rights of all workers, and fight wage theft and other labor abuse. While addressing these broader issues, we also provide internal leadership opportunities in which members help to guide and shape Casa Latina’s own programs. Our organizing efforts benefit Latino immigrants both locally and nationally as Casa Latina advocates for laws and public policies that create a more level playing field for Latino immigrants throughout the country. As our members work together in solidarity, they deepen their sense of ownership and build a strong social network. As a result, members become more confident and engaged participants in society at large.

2014 brought many exciting outcomes of our local and national organizing work:• 133 members participated in our women’s

leadership group, Women Without Borders, learning to use their voices to advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities

• Casa Latina members and staff traveled to the National Domestic Workers Alliance Congress and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network Assembly

• Our Workers’ Defense Committee recovered $10,670 in stolen wages

• Seattle passed a new $15 minimum wage and established a newly funded Office of Labor Standards, investing $1 million in worker outreach focusing on low wage immigrant workers and other groups vulnerable to labor exploitation

• President Obama announced his executive action on immigration in November 2014, providing protection from deportation for parents of American citizens

Over 400 volunteers performed more than 11,200 hours of work at Casa Latina. Their work ranged from teaching ESL to answering phones at our worker dispatch center to weeding and grounds keeping. If we were to hire staff to replace our volunteers, we would need to hire 5.5 full time employees. Our volunteers helped us save over $228,000 in personnel expenses!

“I don’t have the words to describe my love and appreciation for Casa Latina, especially the economic support I’ve received. We’re almost ready to get a house again. And we will succeed.”
