We dream of a world without poverty. A world where every young person has a fair chance to succeed. Where every grown person has what is needed to care for their families and themselves.

We dream of a safe world. A world where water, earth, plants and people can thrive without threat of disease or extinction.

As a supporter of SCLT you don’t just wish for a better future. You’ve also committed your time, your donations, and your heart to making our real world more like the world of our dreams. Together, we employ a practical approach to making change. By helping people grow food in Rhode Island’s most impoverished neighborhoods we:

Create economic opportunities for disadvantaged familiesProvide access to fresh, healthy and affordable foodStrengthen communitiesPromote land stewardship Improve public healthAdvance sustainable agriculturure

Really, is there anything better for us to do? As always, thank you for your dreams and your support. You are an inspiration to all of us at SCLT.

Southside Community Land Trust provides access to land, education and other resources so people in Greater Providence can grow food in environmentally sustainable ways and create community food systems where locally produced, affordable, and healthy food is available to all.

HISTORY

2011The Rhode Island General Assembly passed, and Governor Lincoln D. Chafee signed, a zoning law that made plant agriculture legal in all zones in Rhode Island.

2012The Providence City Council and Mayor Angel Taveras adopted a comprehesive plan pledging to support a dramatic expansion of urban agriculture.

2013The State of Rhode Island Department of Health and the City of

-nered with SCLT to develop Lots of Hope.

MISSION

Recent progress in local food policy

Through Lots of Hope the City of Providence leases land to SCLT for $1 and together we build community gardens & farms where people can grow food for their families or for sale to their neighbors. In 2013, funding for construction was provided by the State of Rhode Island Department of Health, The Rhode Island Foundation, and the Funder’s Network for Smart Growth & Sustainable Communities.

PRESENCE SCLT’s Community Garden Network

Manton Bend Community Farm is a 12,000 sq. ft. garden that boasts 55 plots and 2 raised beds for mobility-impaired gardeners. It also features a washing station for people growing food for sale at neighborhood farmers markets.

SCLT GARDENS: Six acres of urban land that is owned and managed by SCLT has been transformed into 19 gardens where more than 350 families grow, eat, and sell healthy food.PROVIDENCE COMMUNITY GROWERS NETWORK: SCLT has established partnerships with schools, affordable housing organizations, religious and community groups to support a network of 47 community gardens across Providence.NEIGHBORHOOD HUBS: We support community gardens as neighborhood host sites to provide resource distribution and educational workshops for Providence residents.

URBAN EDGE FARM is a 50-acre farm in Cranston, RI. SCLT and the State of Rhode Island Department of Agriculture provide land for 7 small-scale sustainable farms. These farms fuel Rhode Island’s food system and economy while stocking our farmers markets and restaurants with tasty, fresh and exciting local food.

NEW GARDENS: In 2013 SCLT installed 2 brand new gardens -- Brattle Garden and Manton Bend Community Farm. Located in the West End neighborhood, Brattle Garden is used by 30 community gardeners. The new garden includes beds for mobility-impaired gardeners.

CITY FARM is a 3/4 acre urban farm in the heart of Providence’s Southside. This working model of sustainable, hyper-local urban agriculture demonstrates bio-intensive growing methods. A cross between a backyard market garden and small family farm, City Farm demonstrates through

school internship and apprentice programs, and practices possible solutions to problems with the current challenges of food security and conventional agriculture.

WORKSHOPS: Over 250 people attended SCLT’s Plant Providence workshops. Topics included Beginning Organic Growing, chemical free pest control, mulching, season extension, canning and preserving, urban chickens and beekeeping.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS: Gardens and farms are developed in partnership with organizations such as African Alliance, the State of Rhode Island Division of Agriculture, the City of Providence, Dorcas International Institute of RI , The Genesis Center, Olneyville Housing Corporation, Open Doors RI, The Parks Department, Providence Housing Authority, RI Food Bank, West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation and more.

COMPOST: West Broadway Neighborhood Association, Frey Florist and Front Step Farm, SCLT helped collect food scraps from Providence families for use

compost pilot project, nearly 2 tons of food scraps was diverted from the

In 2013 City Farm more than doubled its compost production from 10,000 lbs to 22,000 lbs. Food scraps were collected in cooperation with EcoRI, White Electric & New Harvest Coffee. 11 tons of compostable matter

providing organic compost for the entire 2014 growing season.

VOLUNTEERS: SCLT’s extraordinary supporters donated nearly 1,700 hours of volunteer service in 2013. Volunteer opportunities included workdays for building out 2 brand new gardens, assisting and harvesting at City Farm, the annual plant sale, and assisting in various workshops and events. We could never do it without you!

GROW AND GIVE: SCLT’s urban farmers and community gardeners collectively donated more than 500 pounds of produce to local food pantries and shelters across the city including Rhode Island Food Bank, the Genesis Center and Crossroads RI. Many community gardeners participated in our Grow and Give program; they were asked to grow an extra row of food to donate to Rhode Island’s hungriest and neediest.

In 2013, your support helped SCLT realize its mission in the following ways:

CITY FARM INTERN / APPRENTICE PROGRAM: The young people who have participated in City Farm’s Intern Program boast high school retention and graduation rates of 100%. In addition, 80% of City Farm Apprentices are now farming for a living.
