A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION

Dear Readers,

We are proud to present you with the annual report 2019-2020 of the BMP Foundation. Each year again, the redaction of this report represents a thorough reflection allowing us to refine our objectives, to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year and to move on with ambition and determination.

The 2019-2020 projects have had a positive impact on the image of our hospital for both patients and health care professionals. The support and encouragement of the Brome-Missisquoi community make these achievements possible and allow us to pursue our mission to improve the accessibility and the quality of health care at our hospital.

2019-2020 Projects First and foremost we would like to highlight the projects with significant impact for the BMP Hospital such as the major redevelopment of the Orthopedic Clinic which was inaugurated in March 2020. Furthermore, the hospital obtained the Urgence amie des ainés certificate. A project combining both the acquisition of new equipment and specialized training to better serve our elderly patients.

Positive changeThe Foundation has known several shifts in its permanent staff with the arrival of a new temporary resource (maternity leave replacement) and the transformation of the Executive Director position into two new Director positions. The Board of Directors proceeded with a major restructuration by electing a two-headed managament team. Decentralizing the operations will allow a better administrative management and be in favor of an efficient development of the Foundation. In spite of the personnel movement, our organization was able to continue its functions thanks to a solid office staff and Board of Directors in close collaboration with the health care professionals of the hospital and the general direction of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie - CHUS.

Acknowledgments

Finally, we would like to thank our valuable league of volunteers and generous donors for their continued support in these challenging times. Their contribution allows us to renew our engagement to offer better health care to the Brome-Missisquoi community.

We would like to express our most sincere thanks to the members of the Foundation for their fabulous contribution to our accomplishments this year.

We are looking forward to 2020-2021 with determination and confidence.

Mario Lagimonière President of the Board of Directors

Lola LandesExecutive Director

MESSAGE FROM THE CIUSSSde l’Estrie - CHUS

Since the inception of the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation in 1993, its members have been working relentlessly to improve the accessibility and quality of the medical services to the population of the Brome-Missisquoi region.

As a dedicated oraganization, the Foundation retains year after year the loyal help of donors, volunteers and numerous partners.

In support of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS, the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation contributes each year to accomplish projects such as infrastructure improvement or the acquisition of equipment to the benefit of the users. The inauguration of the new Bombardier-Beaudoin Orthopedic Clinic was made possible thanks to a $1.35 million contribution by the BMP Foundation. This amount made the redevelopment of the clinic and the purchase of new equipment possible. The expansion and modernisation of the clinic responds to the increasing demand and created greatly improved facilities for the clinical teams.

On behalf of the Brome-Missisquoi community and our users, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all participants and donors for making possible the improvement, the quality and accessibility “For and with the users” of the RLS de la Pommeraie!

BMP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

SCHOOL BURSARIES

STUDENT VISITS

The Foundation also supports the local high schools to provide awards of excellence for graduate students who wish to continue their studies in healthcare. Students are selected by their school including: École secondaire Wilfrid-Léger, École Jean-Jacques-Bertrand and École secondaire Massey-Vanier (French and English components).

The BMP Foundation organizes guided school visits for students at the end of their course from the four regional high schools to enable them to discover career opportunities in the healthcare field at the BMP Hospital. Each year, 60 to 70 students participate to these one-day visits discovering careers in medicine, nursing, laboratory, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medical imaging and respiratory therapy.

TO ENCOURAGE THE NEXT GENERATION OF HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS An annual scholarship program of $6 000 The BMP Foundation Scholarships serve two objectives:• To encourage and assist local students to undertake or pursue college studies in the field of health or nursing, depending on the scholarship provided;

• To establish and nurture a positive working relationship between the recipient and the BMP Hospital (CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS La Pommeraie) as a possible place of future employment.

The program is open to any graduating high school student, who resides within the Brome-Missisquoi territory, and who wishes to pursue studies in a health care or nursing profession.

Recipients each receive a $2 000 scholarship, renewable each year of their CEGEP studies, for a maximum of three years.

In 2019, the Chawkers Foundation made a generous contribution to the BMP Foundation not only enabling to continue its Scholarship Program (CEGEP and secondary education) but also making a second scholarship possible: The BMP – Nursing Care Scholarship to be granted to a CEGEP student.

GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS

Acquisition of the MULTITRAC®Birthing chair promoting active birth The Foundation is very proud to present its newest acquisition, an innovative birthing chair promoting active birth. The Multitrac is a modular equipment, enabling active birthing and partner involvement during labour. It comprises an exercise ball, a « Tarzan » rope, a delivery bench and a chair for the partner. This technique already used in Europe allows a natural and safe delivery. Moreover, it is known that mobilization during active labour has several positive effects on childbirth, including reduced pain and fewer medical interventions.

Intensive care beds - $44 424 The BMP Foundation has accepted to fund the purchase of several intensive care beds of superior quality. Equipped with therapeutic surfaces, these beds prevent pressure sores and increase the patient’s comfort. Being user friendly for both the healthcare workers and the patient, these beds boost mobility which helps to treat and prevent pulmonary complications. Not only does this system allow the healthcare worker to weigh without having to move the patient, the bed easily conveys an unstable patient to the imaging department. Eliminating transfers to stretchers, the beds increase the comfort of the patient and make the tasks of hospital personnel easier. An alarm guarantees the patient’s security by warning the personnel as soon as the patient falls or gets out of the bed.

Upgrading and purchasing of new equipment

Urology equipment - $195 000 The Foundation contributed to the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for a newly hired urologist at the BMP Hospital. Different diagnostic tests and surgeries in urology are being done at the BMP Hospital requiring the acquisition of specialized equipment. The cystoscope is a medical instrument enabling and urologist to detect anomalies in the patient’s bladder or uterus. The urethrotome is a surgical instrument for cutting a urethral stricture.

Breastfeading chairs - $12 000 This year, the BMP Foundation invested $12 000 in 15 new breastfeeding chairs for the birthing pavilion, the breastfeeding area of the emergency unit and other designated breast- feeding areas of the BMP Hospital. Different suitable and adjusted places for breastfeeding make a hospital visit more comfortable for young mothers.

As an « Ami des bébés » hospital we make continued efforts to promote and protect breast-feeding for mothers and their little babies.

BIRTHING PAVILION - $12 000

OTHER DEPARTMENTS - $251 424

GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS

Training by a lactation consultant - $40 000 The Foundation accepted to fund the training of lactation consultants. The recruitment of a lactation resource will allow us to remain the leader in offering integrated care to families using our perinatal services.

The BMP Hospital has already a team of trained lactation consultants, certified by the international bureau, in place. Their presence allows us to maintain our quality standard of breastfeeding support. They support the healthcare workers (nurses and doctors) as well as the families in the community. The consultants work at the hospital, in the medical clinics and in the community.

Yoga 4 cancerThe BMP Foundation is proud to collaborate with Yoga and Movement (Laura Hernandez) and the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS to offer free yoga sessions specifically adapted to patients affected by or in remission from cancer.

The project, developed with Laura Hernandez, a certified “Yoga4cancer” professor and holistic wellness consultant, is open to all BMP Hospital patients currently receiving treatment (chemotherapy / radiotherapy) ” Residents of the Brome-Missisquoi region affected by cancer and receiving treatment at one of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS facilities are also admitted.

Spiritual care A second initiative is the funding of service hours of a spiritual care advisor to support patients having a difficult time. The advisor meets with people during an individual session or addresses groups reserved for people who have been confronted with a cancer diagnostic.

Five participants have taken part in four sessions offered in 2019.

EPICC Training - $10 000As part of the quality improvement plan for the emergency service, a specialized training has been offered to the nursing staff of the BMP Hospital. The EPICC program (Emergency Practices, Interventions and Care – Canada) is a national Canadian training program for emergency nursing staff.

The training is based on the criteria of competence of emergency nursing care and aims to develop a systematic approach of a patient dealing with health problems at an emergency unit.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING – $50 000

PATIENT SUPPORT ACTIVITIES (ONCOLOGY CLINIC) – $16 000

GREAT PROJECTS

“Amies des Aînés “ certification (gereatric emergencies) - $400 000The elderly Brome-Missisquoi population, using the emergency service of the hospital, will benefit from a new approach specifically developed for their needs.

The objective of the two-year project (2019-2021) is to prevent elderly people from losing their autonomy by developing a solidified safety net for them before, during and after their stay at the emergency unit.

Improve the functional aspect and capacity of the operating blockThe Foundation wishes to contribute to improve to the operating block of the BMP Hospital by adjusting the layout of the operating theatres and updating its equipment to the current standards. Whether a patient is treated for a hip replacement or an appendix removal, each and every patient will be guaranteed the best care in an up-to-date surgical environment with the best practices in health care.

Acquisition of a laprascopic tower for the operating blockThe operating block of the BMP Hospital is equiped with a laprascopic tower, the service life of which will soon expire. To allow surgeons to operate according to state-of-the-art procedures and to reduce the convalescence period for patients, the Foundation whishes to equip the operating block with an up-to-date high-tech laprascopic tower. The new equipment will not only facilitate the work of the surgeons, but also reduce the waiting time for surgical procedures.

A training will be given to urgentologists, all medical unit staff and volunteers on best practices in gereatric emergency care. A specialized gereatric clinical pivot nurse will be added to the team coordinaing the services given to a patient during their stay and after their release from the emergency unit. A geriatric patient attendant will be assigned to help and assist patients with eating and drinking. The purchase of small adapted equipment will also improve their physical environment.

The criteria, serving as guidelines of this project, will be a first step in our application for “Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation” (GEDA), the official certification from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

This $400 000 major innovative project is possible thanks to a major investment from a friend donor of the BMP Foundation.

TRIBUTE TO

In March 2015, Ms. Lola Landes joined the BMP Foundation staff as Executive Director. In addition to spearheading, with the Board of Directors, the approval of the PACI by the new management of CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS, she was behind the implementation of all major improvement projects funded by the Foundation.

Five years after she took up her position as Executive Director of the Foundation, the Board of Directors wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Ms. Landes for supporting the Foundation and bringing all these important projects to fruition. All the upgrades made to the BMP Hospital are a source of pride for the people of Brome-Missisquoi, for those who work at the BMP Hospital, for the patients and for all the generous donors who have contributed to these projects.

Despite her departure from the Foundation, Ms. Landes has indicated her interest in continuing her support, because of her love for the BMP Hospital and the people of Brome-Missisquoi. Ms. Landes might eventually be joining the Board of Directors of the BMP Foundation where she will be warmly welcomed!

“On behalf of the BMP Foundation Board, the population, the staff and professionals working for the well-being of the patients of the BMP Hospital, and all our donors – THANK YOU Lola for your gift over the past 5 years and for your tremendous work.” Mario Lagimonière, Chairman of the Board of Directors, BMP Foundation

Ms. Lola LandesIn 2014, the Board of directors of the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation adopted a strategic plan to enable the Foundation to strengthen its local positioning through communication development, growth of partnerships with BMP Hospital management and to ensure a proactive and a leading-edge organization. The BMP Foundation Board of Directors also agreed to fund a “Plan d’action clinique et immobilier (PACI)” (also referred to as a Clinical and Real Estate Action Plan) for the BMP Hospital at a level of approximately 75% of the total cost. Objectives: the construction of a new Outpatient Clinic and Oncology Clinic; and the renovation of the Birthing Pavilion and Orthopedic Clinic.

In February 2015, the Ministry of Health passed Bill 10 to fundamentally reform the entire health care system.

MAJOR FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN 2018-2022

Inauguration of the new Bombardier-Beaudoin Orthopedic ClinicLast March the new orthopedic clinic of the BMP Hospital was inaugurated. A total of $2.5 million, including $1.35 million from the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation, was injected into the redevelopment of the clinic and the purchase of new equipment. The extension of the clinic will respond to the growing demand while improving the patients’ confidentiality, comfort and access to new technical orthopedic facilities. The first patients were welcomed on March 10, 2020 in the new clinic which doubled space from 241 m2 to 548 m2.

The major campaign RISE continues…In 2018 the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation launched a Major Campaign with the objective to raise $5 in the 2018-2022 timeframe. The funds raised will be invested in improving the orthopedic clinic and the acquisition of high-tech equipment for the surgical unit.

PLANNED DONATIONS AND LEGACY GIFTS

Planned Donations A planned donation is a donor’s opportunity to plan a future gift, without it representing a cost at the present time. It is a selection of tools from which a donor may select an option that corresponds the best with his or her personal as well as financial situation at the same time as representing their philanthropic aspirations.

The donor can optimize his or her donation and increase the amount donated without it representing an increase in cost. A planneddonation is a future benefit to the Foundation without impacting the donor’s current financial situation. The most common use of a planned donation is a legacy gift or a fund donation which is transferred following the death of the donor, although not limited by this.

Planned Giving PossibilitiesIndividual bequest: a specific amount or a specific asset Residual bequest: all or a percentage of what remains after payment of all debts and particular legaciesUniversal bequest: all of the assets, sometimes divided between several beneficiaries Designation: the Foundation as the beneficiary of a donor’s RRSP, LIF, Pension Plan or Life InsuranceDesignation: the Foundation as a secondary beneficiary when the primary beneficiary passed away All of these options entitle the donor to a tax receipt that may significantly reduce the amount of taxes to be paid by the estate. Make use of the financial advantages of a planned donation by contributing to the BMP Foundation. Call us to discuss the best solution for you as a donor.

Dr. William J. Barakett

On behalf of the Board of Directors and all the staff members of the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation, we wish to extend our sincere condolences to the family of Dr. William Barakett. We share the grief of the community members he served tirelessly, with great care and dedication. It has been an honour for the BMP Foundation to present Dr. Barakett in 2019 with the George Bristol Award in recognition of his exceptional engagement for the wellbeing of the Brome-Missisquoi community, the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital and its Foundation.

Dr. Barakett was named a Member of the Order of Canada and known in the region as a family doctor who goes beyond the call of duty. As a co-founder and president of the BMP Foundation, he was instrumental in raising millions of dollars to improve the health care services by means of financial campaigns and philanthropic actions for which we owe him our eternal gratitude.

Being very much dedicated to people with intellectual disabilities, he became the President of the Butters Foundation raising funds to provide patients with services and housing in the region. He is renowned for his expertise in treating patients with addiction problems. Dr. Barakett was a model of dedication and caring for young general practitioners.

This remarkable and unique person will leave a big void in his community. As a tribute, The Knowlton Golf Club renamed their annual tournament in honour of his name: the William J. Barakett Golf Tournament, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation.

You are a model to all of us at the BMP Foundation. Inspired by your example, we will continue our mission in your honour Dr. Barakett.
