EmmanuelChurchhadayearofbigchanges.Afteralongandthoroughsearch,wewereblessedtowelcomeMotherLeaColvilltoserveasourPriest-in-Charge.Sheandherfamilyhavesettledintoourcommunity,andinrelationshipwithourchurchfamily,withmuchloveandenthusiasm.Godisverypresentthebuilding,andwithMotherLea'sstrongguidance,Ilookforwardtotheupcomingyearofspiritualandphysicalgrowth.

Thevestryaccomplishmentsfortheyear2017arelistedasfollows:

• WebidalovingfarewelltoourbelovedLoisHeagle,assheenteredthekingdomofHeaven.Herlife-longservicetothischurchandtheHaileycommunitywillalwaysberememberedandcelebrated.

• AlargewelcomecrewmettheColvillfamilyattheirnewrentalhomeforanefficient

andjoyfulunloadingoftheirmovingtruckandtravelingvan. • Weawarded$500collegescholarshipstothreeWoodRiverHighSchoolseniors. • GeegeeLowecameonboardasparishadministrator,andwithheramazingconnections

witheverythingHaileyoffers,hasbeenagreatassettothebusinessofkeepingourchurchingoodworkingorder.

• Meet-the-Priestpartieshavetakenplaceallyearinprivatehomes,andhavebeena

wonderfulwaytohavepersonaltimewithMotherLea. • Wesaidatearfulgood-byetoorganistextraordinaire,JimWatkinson,andourcheerful

greeterandtirelessworker,HermioneWatkinson.Theywillalwaysbemissed!LisaPettitofferedherservicestofulfillourmusicneeds,andissharingherwonderfulskillontheorgan.

• PamelapassedherserviceofcoordinatingWorshipLeadersontoJaneReynolds,who

workstirelesslyorganizingtheservices.ThankyoutoPamelaandJane!

• ServiceswereheldinthePrayerGardenthispastsummerandwereagreatsuccess!Abigthankyoutoallwhohelpedmakethispossible,fromgardencleanuptomovingchairsandtables.Lamarisworkingoncompletingnewandpermanentbenchestobeplacednearthewrought-ironcross.Thiswaspossiblebecauseofthenewportablesoundsystem.

• ServicetimeswerechangedtoaccommodateAdultBibleStudyandSundaySchoolfor

anhourbeforeHolyEucharistandMorningPrayerservices.

• AstreetdancewasheldinAugust,andwasagreatsuccess!Itwasajoytoexperiencesomanypeopleintheneighborhoodenjoyingthemselvesthroughmusicanddanceinourfrontyard.

• AgratefulthankyougoestoStaceyClarkforcompletingnewsignageforthechurch

yardandPrayerGarden,andtoLamarforrepairingthesouthfence,whichwascomingdownfromheavysnowweight.

• BishopThomandmembersofotherchurchesinourdioceseattendedaspecialservice

welcomingMotherLeaasourPriest-in-Charge.Shewaspresentedwithhernewvestments(madebyPeggyMillerandJanetHouts).

• TheParishLifeCommitteecontinuestoserveindividualsintheparishwithindividual

helptheymightneed,andthewelcominggiftofbreadtovisitorscontinueswithgreatsuccess.

• EmmanuelwashonoredtohostaChristmasconcertby“AFewGoodMen.”Theywere

joinedbytheWRHSchoir“TheB-Tones”foradditionalholidayselections.TheysangtoapackedhouseadtheirjoyfulmusicinspiredahigherChristmasattendance.

• Handicapaccessisstillunderreview,andwearegettingclosertosolvingthis

complicatedproblem.

IthasbeenanincrediblehonortoserveEmmanuelasyourSeniorWardenforthelastthreeyears.Ourloveforeachotheronvestry,andforallthemembersofourchurchcommunity,hasgivenusthestrengthtocontinuetoserveGodinthisremarkableplacewherewecometoworshiptogether.Imustthankeachandeveryoneofyouforyourtirelesswork,relentlessenthusiasm,andcontinuedgivingofyourheartsandhandstoourfaithcommunity.IwillbegladlyjoiningyouinlovingserviceaswewelcomeanotheryearatourbelovedEmmanuelChurch.

JuniorWardenAnnualReportProjectsin2017:Fence:Thesouthfencetothechurchpropertywasdamagedduetotheheavysnowfalloflastwinter.Thefencepostswerereplacedandcementedintheholes.Thefencerailsthatweredamagedwerereplacedasweretheverticalfencing.Aftertherepairswerecompletethefencewasstained.ExteriorofAnnexbuilding:RepaintedwhereneededFireInspectionofChurch:Thefireinspectorwentthroughtheentirebuilding.Replacedallfireextinguishers,furnaceroomwasreorganizedandallflammablesweretakenoutoftheroombutmadetheirwayback.Replacedfrontchurchexteriorlight.Furnaceswereinspectedandmaintained.Ashelfwasmadeandinstalledundertheinsideofthemainaltar.Oakpiecesofwoodwereattachedtostepsleadinguptothemainaltar.Garden:Thevegetationofthegardenwastrimmedbackbeforewinter.TheFergusonbenchesweredesignedandfabricatedthisyear.ThestonefortheFergusonbencheshasbeenpurchasedandwearenowwaitingonSunValleyrugandTiletocutthestonetosizefortheseatsandbacksofthetwobenches.Onemoresteptothebenchesandthatisengravingthestonebacks.Thebenchesshouldbecompletedthisspring.Signs:ThreebeautifulnewsignswereinstalledbeforeEaster.DeclutteringandDécor:Muchdeclutteringhappenedbeforethestreetdanceaswehadthedumpsteravailable.Handsometables,chairs,artwork,pillowsandamirrorweredonatedbytheReynolds-Eganhousehold.Handicapaccessandhistoricalrestoration:VestrymembersconferredwiththeRev.JohnRunkle,churcharchitectandpriest,andmetwithJayCone,localarchitect.Botharchitectsagreeonasimilarplanforhandicapaccess.JayConeisresearchingbuildingcodestoseeiftheproposedplanisviablegiventhesizeofourlotandtheslopeoftheland.Considerationsofhistoricalrestorationprojectsinourworshipspaceareonholduntilwehavemoreinformationabouttheviabilityofhandicapaccess.Buildingprojectsfor2018:Fireexitsignsneedtobereplacedtomeetfirecode.Plastictubswithlidsforflammablesinthefurnaceroomwillreducethehazard.Wehaveabrokenwindowinthechurchoffice.Awindowgiftedtothethriftshopneedstobeinstalled.Lightsintheofficeneedrepair.Moldinthebathroomnearthekitchenneedstobetestedandmitigated.Hallwaynearthestairsneedspaint.Thelargestmeetingroomneedspaint.Thecityrequiresabackflowvalvewherewaterentersthebuildingbut,otherwise,ourplumbinglooksgood.ThiscompletestheJuniorWarden’sReport.SinceIwillnotbeabletoattendtheannualmeeting,IwouldliketosayIthasbeenanawesomejourneyformehereatEmmanuel.Iamtrulyblessedtohaveallofyouinmylife.IthasbeenaprivilegetoserveontheVestry.Ilovemychurchfamily.LamarWaters

Vicar’sReport–MotherLeaColvillWhenIwasgraduatingfromhighschool,IhadavisonthatmyworkwouldbetotellpeopleaboutGod’sloveandtoreducefear.Ifellinlovewiththepotentialofchurches.Churchfeltlikeaplaceofjoyamidalotofchaos.Aplaceofloveamidalotofcruelty.Aplaceofwonderandmystery,whenIlivedinaneighborhoodthatwashometoalotofhardworkingbuthopelesspeople.Inaworldwheremedia,politics,andeveneverydayconversationarestillmarkedbynegativity.ChurchwasaplacewhereIfeltinvitedtothinkaboutwhatreallymatterstoGodandtome.Churchwasaplacewhereeveryonewaswelcome,butnot“anythinggoes.”ChurchwasaplacethatseemedsodifferentfromtheworldIsawduringtheweek,andithelpedmefacesometoughstuffinmylife.MaybeyoualsohaveastoryabouthowchurchbecameameaningfulplaceforyoutoencounterGod.

Ibelievethatchurchcanbeanamazingplace.Lessthanayearago,IfirstcametoEmmanuelbecauseIhadafeelingthatthepeopleImetherebelievedthatchurchcouldbesomethingamazing,too.Thatitwasn’tjustasocialclub,oramuseumdedicatedtoBishopTuttle,oraplacetoengageinalittleancientritual.Achurch,really,wasaplacetomeetGod,aplacetobeacommunityofthefriendsofGod,aplacethatcanchangelives.

OneofthingsthatJesusdidwastotakehisbestfriendsintothemountainswherehecouldbehimself.IntheGospelofMark,hewastransfiguredsothathelookedmorelikethestarofBethlehemthanthebabeofBethlehem.ItwassoamazingthatPeterandJamesandJohnexpectedthatJesuswouldstaytherefor40daysasotherprophetshad.Instead,itwasoverbyafternoon.Hehadworktodo…hisworkwasovercomingdeath.

AcentralmissionoftheministryofJesus,especiallyinthegospelofMark,istofreepeoplefromwhattrapsthem,andtofacedownthepowersofevilheencountersashewalksfromtowntotown,andthentoJerusalemandthecross.That’sheavystuff,butthat’spartoftheworkofthechurch–tobepartofJesus’ministryofhealingandtransformation.Toturndeathupsidedown.Topointoutthatloveisstrongerthanevil.ThatJesushasthepowertobreakthethingsthatpossessus.Tobebrighterthanweoftendare.

Churchcanbeamazing.ChurchcanbeaplacewemeetJesus,whereGodcandriveoutwhatholdsusbackfromfullyexperiencingGod’slove,whereourlivescanbechanged.Illuminated.

I’mhappytoreporttoyou,thatalthoughtimesaretoughforchurches,thingsatEmmanuelareshowinglightandheat.Ourattendanceisup20percentandgivingisup31.5percent.Wehavefournewprograms:theStreetDance,AdultForum,PubTheologyandbasecampfor“AFewGoodMen”singinggroup.Sundayschoolhasresumed.

Vitalityishardtomeasure:Bothourorganistandadministratorquitonmyfirstday.Butwehiredwithoutdrama.Wehadalovelybaptism,andEasterpotluckandtwooutdoorservices.Andmorethanhalfofourmembersattendedahousepartytomeetthepriestandsharetheirdreamsandstories.Newsignsandflowersincreasedourcurbappeal.Curbappealisactuallyevangelical.Thethriftstoreseemstohavefewervacantdays.Thethriftstoreispartofourincomeandoutreachtofragilepeople.PubTheologyaswellasafewnewspaper,magazineandradiointerviewsarebeginningtoremindresidentsofHaileythatEmmanuelisawake.Typically,

fivetotenpercentofEpiscopaliansengageinadultforumandwehavehadasmanyashalfofourmembersengagedinBiblestudy.Becausewechangedtheservicetimes,wereopenedSundayschoolwithsixnewSundayschoolteachers.Youthrewmeapartyandclothedmeinapplegreenvestments.OurcooperationwithSt.Thomasisincreasingwithmusicalexchangesforchoralevensongandchoir.Wereplacedabrokennativityscenewithakid-friendlyonewithreplaceableparts.TheColvillfamilybuiltavicarage.Mypastoralconversationswithyouaremorefrequentandmoreprofound.Emmanuelisthehappyrecipientofagiftof$25,000fromLightySampson.AndmostimportantlythechurchworshipedeverySundaybecauseofthecreativeleadershipoflayleaders.Churchcanbeamazing.

Theremaybeotherwaystoaccomplishthesegoals.Theremaybegoalswewishtoabandon.Iwillprovideyouwithashortsurveytogatheryouropinionstoinformmydecisiononservicetimes.Iwouldliketoclearthatchildrenhavebeeninvitedtocompleteservicesbutsomearenotusedtoacompleteserviceandfeelalittleoverwhelmed.Adultattendanceisupbutchildattendanceisdownsowearenotthereyet.WedonotknowGod’sansweryet.ButIbelieveitwillbeamazing.ServicetimeswillbestableuntilMay20,thelastdayofSundayschool.

ManyofyouhaveaskedifourstrongstewardshipdrivewillresultinadditionalSundaysforme.Iamhopingthatwillbetrue,downtheroad.Duringyourthreeyearswithoutapriest,yousavedenoughmoneytosupplementapriest’swageforthreeyears.Youfocusedonthewage.Youdidnotfocusontherelocationcosts,thecostofacellphone,mileagetorequiredevents,continuingeducation,discretionaryaccountorinsuringmorethanonepersonatthelowestinsurancepackageavailableinIdaho.BishopBrianThomallowedustobreakthechurchcanonsandbuyinsuranceonthemarketsothatwecouldcomehere.Eachmemberofmyfamilyhasa$6000deductiblesowearedoingourpart.ThismismatchispartiallybecauseeveryoneimaginedthatsomememberswhodepartedwithFr.ShawnwouldcomebackwhenIarrived.Theydidnotcomeback.Wearewhereweareanditcanstillbeamazing.

Ineedtobeclear:myfamilyisreallyhappyinHailey.Wedonotwanttoleavein2019attheendofourcontract.WewanttostayforeightyearsandthenIwillhavetogetahigherpaying

jobtopayforFreya’scollege.KevinwantstolivehereforeversoheishopingtheCollegeofSouthernIdahohasprogramsshewants,sohecanvisit.Ourresourcesforhereducationarelimitedbecauseseminaryusedalmostallourresources,butthatisastoryforanothertime.Ineedtotellyouthatthelibraryisagoodmatchforme,andanevangelicalandpastoralgoldminebutIamalertforahigherpayingjobwhereImightbeabletobuyinsurancemorecheaply.ItwillbedifficulttomatchtheflexibilitythelibrarygivesmeforchurchfunctionsbutIamlooking.Mycontract,aswritten,isnotrenewableafterthreeyearssothebudgetfor2018isasleanascanbetostretchthatyour“Wishwehadapriestsavings”asfaraspossibleintothefuture.Heatandwaterforthegroundsarelimitedasiseverythingelse.In2017,Itoldeveryonetotrytokeepcosts“aboutthesameaslastyear.”Weused$25,000insavingsin2017andthatisnotsustainable.Ouronlynewexpensein2018islikelytobebookkeepingservicesasNancywillretireinaboutahalfofyear.Currently,wehavenotidentifiedanyonewhohasbookkeepingskillstodonatetoEmmanuel.

Brothersandsisters,wearenotstagnantandIthinkweareoneofthelittlelightsonamountaintopinIdaho.LikeChrist,wecannotstaysecureinourholyfellowship.Wehaveworktodo.Wemustinviteotherstojoinus.Thestoriesyoutoldmeatthemeetthepriestpartiesareenough.Whenyouansweredthequestion“Emmanuelismychurchbecause…itmeetsmyneedfor….”youtrainedyourselfinevangelism.Weoffersomethingnotmanychurchesinourareado:liturgical,catholicworship,acommunityoffriendlyfolks,achurchwherebaptismalministryisreal–notjusttheministryofthepriest,achurchwithavibrantspirituallifeandhungertolearn.

Peopleneedtoknowwhatyoulikehere.Sowhatdoyoulikebest?Evangelismisaboutmeetingtheneedsofpeoplewehavenotmetyet,nottheneedsoftheinstitution.Iamheretohelp.Ihaveaparttoplaybybeingastrongpreacherandalovingpastorbutinvitingpeople,welcomingthemandconnectingpeopletobothparishionersandministries…that’sonyou.Thisreportisheretohelptheheadsofministriesandmembersconnect.IaskyoutocontinuetostrivewithmetomakeEmmanuelanamazingplace.OnSundaymornings,foradults,forkids,forvisitors,foroursurroundingcommunity.Iaskyoutothinkaboutthethingsyoudooutsideofthisgatheringasholyworktoo.Together,wemakechurchsomethingthatchangeslives.Yourlife,mylife,thelivesofourkids,thelivesofourneighbors,thelivesofthesick…aplacetoletJesusshineintothedarkplacesinheartsandbringslightandheat.Ibelieveyourheartandtheheartsofthepeopleyoumeetarechangedbecausewe’reabletomeetJesusheretogetheronSundays.Ithinkthisbecausechurchcanbeamazing.

Ibelieveinyou.AndIamsoproudofyou,Emmanuel.Iwonder.WheredoyouseeGodinthestoryofEmmanuel?Wheredoyouseeyourselfinourstory?Whatcouldweremoveandstillhaveallthechurchweneed?Whatdoweneedtokeeptobethebestchurchwecanbe?Whatisholdingusback?Theonlyplanweneed,Ithink,isGodspeakingatourcenter—ourlight,ourheatandourhope.Amen.
