Report of the Officer-in-charge
The financial year 2017-18 began with roar of ‘Tejas’ and ‘Subbi’ the pair of asiatic
lion brought from state of Gujrat. The Asiatic lions put on for public display for the
first time in zoo’s history and the moment of animal release in the enclosure
witnessed by large sections of media and wildlife enthusiast across the city. The
inclusion of new species for public display came up around five years after the
reticulated pythons, the species of which three specimens were added in 2011. The
media coverage for animals release and the subsequent news of event thereafter
pulled the visitor crowd in the zoo. However pair of the species is being temporarily
displayed in the enclosure meant for the white tigers. Once the separate enclosure
work for the species completes, the animals would be shifted to new facility.
The year had sizable amount of infrastructure development works completed in a
span. The long pending enclosure for Nilgai finally completed and most of the
animals shifted too in a newer facility. This is the first enclosure of its kind in the zoo
of recent time wherein animal comfort, animal safety and enclosure greenery are
focused adequately. The whole enclosure has been put under CCTV camera
surveillance. To maintain greenery in and around enclosure a innovative idea is
invoked wherein water from old natural stream is collected in a tank through gravity
and circulated using pop up sprinklers to irrigate eastern stretch of zoo
admeasuring around 600 meters. To improve the behavioral enrichment for the
elephant the water pool for the species was on card; the civil work of the same has
began and hopefully the facility will take a final shape soon. The earlier signage
boards in broken conditions and with outdated information have been replaced by
newer one with updated contents filled in with nature immersing colors. The bonnet
macaque night house needed immediate refurbishment; the desired renovation work
of the night cubical and enclosure sewer line also completed which would help
staffer to ease their daily work.
The ex situ conservation breeding programme of Malabar giant squirrel one of the
set objective of zoo seems to become reality soon. One of the pair from available
founder population has got compatible and accustomed to the existing housing
conditions. The animals successfully bred twice in a year and delivered healthy
young ones. All the founder population would be shifted to spacious newer facility on
Annual Report 2017-18 Page 7
a land area earmarked for the purpose to have future physically, genetically and
behaviorally healthy progeny.
The unfortunate death of some important animal specimen has either left enclosure
without species or the animal without mate. Animal exchange programme had been
chalked out with other recognized zoos across the country to have pair of sloth bear,
pair of Grey wolf and a female Gaur in the zoo’s collection. The population control in
the prolifically breeding species is a critical aspect, however this zoo had a success
story of surgical neutering in the male population amongst spotted deer, sambar,
blackbuck, bonnet macaque and rhesus macaque. Now we extend our technical
support to others institutions too for the effective population control using the
techniques implemented by us. Our zoo team invited by Nandankanann zoo
successfully imparted practical demonstration of vasectomy in spotted deer for their
staff.
The overall visitor footfall of the year remained substantially higher than the
preceding year. We aims to enhance it further adding more amenities for the visitor
convenience. The zoo information application, cloak room, new public address
system, at least one more RO water plant along the eastern portion across the
main road, new ferroconcrete made sitting benches would be the few additions of
the forthcoming year.

History of the Zoo
Pune Municipal Corporation established Peshwe Park Zoo at the foot hills of Parwati
in 1953 where the Pashwa’s had their private Menagerie. The zoo had been
established on a limited land of around 7 acres where the animals used to be
housed and displayed to the visitors in a concrete cages behind the iron bars.
This zoo was representing the typical traditional zoos of the time wherein only the
objective of recreation for the visitors had been focused.
With the formation of Central Zoo Authority in 1992 the scenario of the Indian
zoos got totally changed. The zoos had to transform from the meagre menagerie to
the scientific wildlife conservation centre. With a view to develop a zoo which would
fulfil the objectives of naturalistic animal housing, conservation breeding, wildlife
conservation education and research a new site at Katraj having a land area of 130
acre was selected and development work initiated in 1996. The new zoo inaugurated
on 14th March 1999 and renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife
Research centre.
Initially the infrastructure development in the form of naturalistic enclosures for
the ungulates, primates, sloth bear, Royal Bengal tiger, Asian elephant etc. was
established. The old reptile park established in 1986 had merged in the zoo. At
present the zoo is a home to around 63 species of wildlife fauna including mammals,
birds and reptiles which represents the Western Ghat and Deccan plateau. The
animals are being displayed in spacious naturalistic enclosures in a thematic
Annual Report 2017-18 Page 9
manner. Enclosure exhibits are developed simulating the animals naturalistic habitat
where environment enrichment is focused considering animals behavioral need.
Animal upkeep and health care has been taken care of establishing veterinary
hospital equipped with advanced diagnostic tools and treatment facilities.
Vision
The Rajiv Gandhi zoo will use this unique facility to build conservation
consciousness among the citizens of Pune that will assist in creating a pro
environment lobby force for protecting biodiversity of our unique state with its diverse
ecosystems that include the bio-rich Western Ghats, the semiarid grasslands of the
Deccan, and the aquatic ecosystems, along with the region’s diverse range of plant
and animal species
Mission

of approved master plan
of zoo, work of ongoing
nilgai enclosure finally
completed. The facility
admeasuring around
4000 sq.mtr. built up
with V shaped dry moat
enclosure barrier on
front side and the rear
barrier is with chain link
fence of around 2.5
meter hight. In the middle of the enclosure resting shade has been established with
ferroconcrete to merge the structure with surrounding. The mounds of boulder
placed around, adds the aesthetic value of exhibit and which also serves the
purpose of seclusion for the animals. The native indigenous tree species are planted
all around the paddock and adequately protected with secure tree guards. To
maintain greenery in and around the enclosure exhibit new irrigation system with pop
up sprinklers has been installed making use of water from natural stream across the
premise. To keep eye on
the animal and track their
movement CCTV cameras
are put up at different
locations.
Remodelling of Bonnet
Macaque enclosure

macaque had been

fourteen years back. In the recent time the drainage line connecting the night house
got damaged and frequently had a problem of getting chocked. The problematic
section of the drainage system completely rectified replacing new construction at the
site. The chain link barriers of the night cubical had a rusting all across the length.
The old chain link and supporting structural steel items are substituted with newer
materials of longer durability. Inside and exterior of the house is painted with nature
immersing colours.
Strengthening of Gaur enclosure
The enclosure facility for the gaur had also been constructed some fifteen years
back. The parapet wall of the whole exhibit had a drawback of being not constructed
with reinforced cement concreting. The western stretch of the parapet wall weakened
over the years, inclined inside the exhibit posing risk of getting collapsed and
consequently challenging the safety of animals and visitors. The complete stretch of
about fifty meter long parapet wall newly constructed with RCC style. Further the
krall section of the night house had not enough space to retain the existing
specimens. The krall area is being further expanded to about 150 Sq. Mtr
New information signage
Previously installed informational signage of animals were broken and got outdated
and in condition. Hence, most of the signage boards are being replaced with updated
information and long lasting vandal proof materials. The remaining work of
directional signage would also be completed next phase.
Renovation at main entrance
The service road around the director office established way back at the time of
inauguration had been in dilapidated state. The complete road and surrounding land
surface refurbished using stamp concrete with camouflaging designs immersing with
nature. The amenities for the office staff also elevated establishing parking lot for the
two wheelers of employees.
Annual Report 2017-18 Page 41
New guard rail
The earlier guard rails around all the animal enclosure were being made up of metal
structure and the same were seems to be dominating the surrounding landscape. It
had been long planned to modify the existing metallic structures with appropriate
substitute to leave it merged with nature. Around 400 meters of metal railing placed
around Spotted deer, Sambar and Gaur modified with ferroconcrete imparting
bamboo like appearance. The new infrastructure genuinely helps enhance aesthetic
of the enclosures and surrounding.
Water pool for the Elephant
At present two female elephants are being housed in a 21000 sq.mtr. facility.
However besides of such huge space the water body as a tool for behavioural
enrichment of the animals had been missing. The plan chalked out to construct
moderate size water pool with a capacity to contain at least three elephants at a
time. The work has began, however the complete facility will take final shape
sometime around first quarter of forthcoming financial year.

Celebrated at Pune Zoo
Annual Report 2017-18 Page 55
Every year March 3 is celebrated as World Wildlife Day to raise awareness about
our planet’s flora and fauna. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered
Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was finalized on March 3 and the day has
been celebrated as World Wildlife Day since 2014. CITES is an international
agreement between the governments of 183 countries to protect wild plants and
animals and ensure their survival.
In this context Pune Municipal Corporation’s Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and
Wildlife Research Centre celebrated the World Wildlife Day on 3rd March 2018. On
this occasion power point presentation on “Big cats- predators under threat” which is
the theme of this year conducted by the Educational Officer of the Zoo and another
session on ‘Role of Wild Flora and Fauna in maintaining Ecological Balance’ was
delivered by Mr. Vilas Gogate, Ex Director, National History Museum, New Delhi for
the 90 students of std. 8th and 9th from PMC Katraj Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Katraj,
Pune. Students also participated in the ‘Face Painting’ activity held at the Zoo to
create awareness among the zoo visitors about conservation of Big Cats.
Documentary on ‘Truth about Tiger’ was also screened for the participants during the
event. The expanded definition of big cats is being used, which includes not only
lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar -- the 4 largest wild cats that can roar - but also
cheetah, snow leopard, puma, clouded leopard, etc. were also introduced to the
audience.
Big cats are among the most widely recognized and admired animals across the
globe. However, today these charismatic predators are facing many and varied
threats, which are mostly caused by human activities. Overall, their populations are
declining at a disturbing rate due to loss of habitat and prey, conflicts with people,
poaching and illegal trade. For example, tiger populations plummeted by 95% over
the past 100 years and African lion populations dropped by 40% in just 20 years. But
a range of measures are underway to arrest this decline.
Over the past century we have been losing big cats, the planet’s most majestic
predators, at an alarming rate. World Wildlife Day 2018 gives us the opportunity to
raise awareness about their plight and to galvanize support for the many global and
national actions that are underway to save these iconic species. Through World
Wildlife Day big cats will generate the level of attention they all deserve to be sure
they are with us for generations to come.
