ANNUAL REPORT 2016

Fall Desire Trails hike, led by Hazel White (AFF 2012–15). Photo by Jonathan Sprague.

Please join us in taking a look back at 2016— a year filled with new works, inspiring encounters, and significant moments. Over the course of the year we reaffirmed our commitment to serving artists and the public in exploring their creativity, connecting with one another, and generating new ideas. The year had its share of life altering current events, both local and national, and the urgency and import around supporting the most innovative and creative thinkers of our time has become even more paramount. As you’ll see in the pages that follow, 2016 was a year of growth, momentum, and continued focus on the things we value most. In 2016, we:

• Unveiled a new artist commissioned space, Carrie Hott’s The Key Room, which serves as Headlands’ new “visitor center,” helping the public sift through our layered and complex indigenous, natural, military, and artistic history.

• Hosted more than 30 public programs included Dinner and Conversation with Toyin Ojih Odutola (AIR ’16) and philosopher Alva Noë; hands-on Fieldwork Sessions with textile artist Tali Weinberg and photographer Sean McFarland (AIR ’11); and Sunday Supper, a new food-focused series that builds on Headlands’ tradition of community meals.

• Embarked on an ambitious, forward-looking campus project, The Commons, the key deliverable of our current agreement with the National Park Service. Construction began late in the year on a redesigned entryway, public performance and gathering space, and three new permanent artist commissions.

• Commenced a rigorous master planning process to develop a strategic vision for the years ahead that reflects our community of supporters, and our unique position as a catalyst for creative exchange:

• Served a record 95 artists in our programs for artists, which offer time, space, and professional and financial support to local, national, and international artists working at the cutting edge of their practices.

Board Chair (2016–Present)

In the words of 2016 AIR Greg Youmans:

“I became meditative here, understanding better the relationship between solitude and inspiration… I was stimulated by my daily encounters with other writers and artists working on very different projects. It was a collegial atmosphere, but it also set the bar high for my own work. I know that I will keep in touch with many of the other artists well beyond my time here.”

As we look ahead to our 35th anniversary in 2017, we are exceedingly grateful for the commitment, generosity of spirit, and collective wisdom contributed by our staff, Board, volunteers, partners, members, and the more than 1,400 artists who have shared their work and insights with us. On behalf of all of us at Headlands, thank you for making this possible. We look forward to continuing—with you—the important work of supporting challenging new projects and those who endeavor to realize them.

2016 BY THE NUMBERS

In 2016, Headlands continued to cultivate support for its annual programming and its future capital commitments. Headlands closed 2016 with $2,333,529, the strongest cash position in the organization’s history, in anticipation of large capital expenditures for The Commons, a capacity building project beginning in 2017. Of that, $439,840 is unrestricted, $180,199 is restricted for programs, $1,311,800 is capital restricted, and $401,690 is Board designated reserve.

This year’s financial results include $279,000 in campaign contributions, helping Headlands exceed its multi-year campaign goal for The Commons. Included in this campaign were funds allocated to support a master planning process also scheduled for 2017, to develop a strategic vision for Headlands’ future.
