Iowa Public Radio informs, enriches

and engages Iowans through high-quality

news and cultural programming.

On behalf of IPR’s Board of Directors, I write to thank you for recognizing — through your financial support — the importance and the value of the public radio stations owned by Iowa’s Regent Universities and managed by Iowa Public Radio.

FY 2015 was a year of new leadership, both on the board and in station management. Our new executive director brought a fresh perspective and a commitment to the fundamentals: excellent programming, financial discipline and responsiveness to our listeners and staff. Board and staff worked together to improve our financial position and to grow our audience and

membership. Private support now makes up about 70% of IPR’s income, and our audience exceeds 200,000 listeners per week. We also looked ahead, revising our strategic plan and reaching out to listeners, holding Open Houses in Ames, Cedar Falls, Des Moines and Iowa City. Using audience data, we updated our weekend program schedule. Our talk shows extended the reach of the Regent Universities through regular on-air contributions from university experts. And we tapped the considerable talent and energy on the IPR team to jump-start work on key issues facing Iowa Public Radio, including clarifying outreach priorities and creating plans for expanding our reach through new technologies.

I am particularly proud of IPR’s work that allows Iowans to listen to and engage in civil dialogue and to explore the important issues of our time in an in-depth way — an exploration that would be otherwise missing in broadcast media. In a world where media outlets seek the sensational and fan the flames of conflict, often sacrificing accuracy in order to be “first,” IPR continues to provide a space for thoughtful coverage and conversation about the issues that face our state and nation.

We would not have accomplished what we have, or be optimistic for IPR’s future, without you. Thanks for listening to IPR and for your continuing support.

Sincerely,

Ambassador Mary Kramer (retired)Chair, Iowa Public Radio Board of Directors

IPR’s Fundraising IncreasedOverall, private support to IPR was up 4.4% over FY14. Membership increased by nearly $190,000 and major gifts by $160,000. A sustainer program, which allows members to pay for their memberships monthly by credit card or EFT, has created an on-going source of revenue. The business community has continued to support IPR, providing more than $1.5 million in support for Iowa Public Radio. 69.4% of IPR’s income was from fundraising, with the remainder from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Iowa’s public universities and the State of Iowa.

IPR’s Financial Position ImprovedIPR improved its financial position by increasing fundraising and controlling expenses, laying a foundation for balanced budgets and growth in the future.

IPR News and Talk Teams Recognized for ExcellenceIn 2015, two members of IPR’s news team won regional Edward R. Murrow awards. IPR’s Harvest Public Media reporting partnership has increased agriculture reporting, and IPR talk shows continue to be a statewide platform for civil dialogue on the issues facing Iowa.

IPR’s Classical and Studio One services extended the reach of cultural institutions in IowaIPR aired hundreds of hours of music heard live in Iowa and provided a platform for emerging artists. IPR is an important player in Iowa’s music scene and an essential partner for organizations like the Des Moines Symphony, Des Moines Music Coalition and Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony.

IPR’s Studio One positioned itself to be a key player in the emerging music scene in IowaPartnerships with the Des Moines Social Club and 80/35 music festival have provided new opportunities for IPR to share live music from local artists and connect with a younger, passionate audience, and laying the groundwork for planned expansion to a 24-hour Studio One stream in FY16.

IPR successfully moved our central Des Moines area classical signal to a new frequency101.7 FM in central Des Moines moved to 97.7 FM in March. Our translator, licensed to Iowa State University, was required to make the move to accommodate the moves of two other stations.

FY15 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

to 69.4% of IPR’s overall

budget.2

Page 4: Annual Report 2015 - Public Interactivemediad.publicbroadcasting.net/p/ipr/files/annual... · Every day, I’m impressed by the dedication and talent of the IPR staff. Universally,

from the executive directorWhen I joined Iowa Public Radio in January 2014, I was struck by the number of people across the state who shared my passion for public radio. I believe that public radio plays an essential role in the cultural and civic life of Iowa. Since my arrival, I’ve spent countless hours traveling the state, meeting and talking with Iowans who depend on Iowa Public Radio to provide them with news that informs, music that enriches, and conversations that engage. It is gratifying to hear the broad and deep support for the work that we do.

Every day, I’m impressed by the dedication and talent of the IPR staff. Universally, I have found a team deeply committed to serving our listeners with the highest quality public radio service possible. Our news team and talk show staff work hard to tell the story of our state. Our music hosts craft inspiring playlists and showcase the best in musical talent. Behind the scenes, our operations and engineering teams are the best in the business, ensuring that our programming is delivered seamlessly to your radio. No matter the department, I can confidently say that IPR’s team is top notch and committed to serving you, our listeners.

None of this great work is possible without the support of Iowa State University, University of Iowa, and University of Northern Iowa, and the thousands of listeners and hundreds of businesses who support IPR financially. Our fundraising efforts continue to be successful, thanks to the generosity of people like you who understand that IPR is a vital service that enhances life here in Iowa. I am proud to say that support from private sources is on the rise — now making up nearly 70% of our overall budget. On behalf of everyone at IPR, thank you for continuing to invest in our work.

The future of Iowa Public Radio is bright. In the coming year, we plan to develop new ways to provide our content to our listeners. We will continue to improve our programming line-up. We will become more present in the communities that we serve, with the goal of connecting with more Iowans than ever before. Most importantly, we will remain dedicated to producing and delivering the very best in news and music programming to our statewide audience.

Thank you for listening and thank you, again, for your support of Iowa Public Radio.
